MESSAGE FROM THE HEADTEACHER

As we come to the half-way point in the academic year, for me it is a time to reflect. I am really encouraged by the work going on in lessons and I feel students are, on the whole, working exceptionally hard.

At the beginning of term our Year 11 students received their mock grades. These were strong although all students will have areas to work on. The challenge for all these students is to learn from the mock results and work even harder to improve in their final 12 weeks. I would like to thank all their parents for their support in helping the students achieve their best. It is encouraging to see the number of parents who attended our Subject Evenings for Year 7 and 11 (over 90% for each year group). Clearly these are some of the best opportunities for parents to understand how they can support their child’s learning, and I would ask all parents to make these a priority as we need your support if your children/our students are to make the progress of which they are capable. Together we can achieve more.

Early next half term, the GCSE options process begins for our Year 9 students. Information Evening is on the 25th of February (1st Tuesday after half term). I urge all parents to attend, as this is an evening where the process is explained fully and will help you in supporting your child to make good option choices for Years 10 and 11.

We are delighted with how many students are benefiting from the extra-curricular activities which are available to them. The numbers are greater than ever before attending weekly sessions in Art, Drama, DT, Science, Music and sports. I am delighted to see students participate in our fledgling teams of Hockey and Rugby and am excited about tennis beginning next term.

Last week saw many of the Year 11 students embark on a school trip to Iceland. The students were fantastic ambassadors for the school and I was very jealous every time I went on Instagram seeing how much they enjoyed it. This week sees some other students going on a ski trip with the school. These are great experiences for students and I would like to thank our staff for giving of their time to offer these opportunities.

As a school we will continue to work hard for all our students and are continually looking at ways to improve facilities and opportunities.

I wish everyone a restful half term.

Thank you for all your continued support.

Students with 100% Attendance: On the whole attendance within this year group is very good, a positive 97.3%. However, when attendance drops below 90% for individuals this can be worrying and sometimes referrals are made to the Educational Inclusion Officer. There are genuine reasons for some absence from school and ill health cannot be avoided. However, if a student misses just one day a week every week in an academic year, this accounts for 20% of their education being missed. It is essential that students are in school as much as possible and ensure that they are proactive in catching up on missed work.

I am very pleased to congratulate 43 students that have achieved 100% attendance since September, this is a fantastic achievement – well done!

Tutor group attendance percentages, as I write, are as follows:

Students with the Highest Number of Commendations: Students in Year 7 are working really hard to receive commendations from their teachers. They receive letters and certificates once they reach various milestones at 25, 50, 75 and 100 commendations. For any students who need to access a computer, printer and support for completing homework, this club provides that facility. Congratulations to all students who have been mentioned in this edition! February 2020 YEAR 8

Another really busy half term has seen students taking part in a variety of activities around the school. It was superb to see so many students taking a leadership role in STEM week working with other schools. We have a few students in the school production. There have been quite a few sports fixtures too.

Amelia Watts and Willow Harrison-Fudge went to School for the afternoon to see and listen to the prestigious organ in the Chapel. They said “it was a really good comfortable atmosphere when playing. We really enjoyed learning about the history of the organ and more about Phil Scriven, the organist. We came away feeling inspired and it will encourage us to continue with piano. We may even take up the organ!”

This week was subject prizes assembly. The following students were awarded for their effort or achievement in a subject:

February 2020 YEAR 9 Year 9 made a great start to their Spring term at Glebelands. We have had a very busy term with lots of activities and trips taking place. I am pleased that Year 9 students are improving their attendance and punctuality as we progress into this term. Please try to make sure students are in on time, we expect them to be in tutor time by 8:45am each morning ready to start their day. We have been having a big focus on uniform and being smartly dressed and will be continued to check students after we return from half term. Please note the rules on haircuts/ skin fades/ dye colour and fake nails/ gels etc. as we always have a few things to sort out after a holiday it seems. I have been extremely pleased to see students continuing to participate in extra- curricular activities such as Choir, Rock Choir, Orchestra, Robotics, Football and Art Clubs. Our P.E department have been extremely busy with tournaments and fixtures and you will find all those details later in this newsletter. We do try to publish opportunities to students in assemblies and lessons so do encourage them to try something new if it catches their eye. Year 9 Options

This week I was very pleased to take 8 Year 9 students to an ASPIRE Federation day at Watts Gallery in Compton. We were working in cross school teams to look at the local history of this fascinating artistic site and discover more about the local, national and international impact of two famous artists Mary and G.F Watts. The students were a credit to the school and bravely presented their ideas about an artefact they were researching to the Principal of College and the Director of Gallery. Well done to Isabel Cook, Tristan Joy, Katie Mair, Jake McFetrich, Jasper Savage, James Storey, Beth Townsend and Maddie Regan.

Also well done to three Year 9 Rowan Brock, Zach Golesworthy and Jay Whitaker who this week completed a project called GASP. They spent a few hours each week over the last six weeks working with motor mechanics on a series of engine diagnostics and fixes which I hope they enjoyed. We have also started the process of talking to Year 9 about the Options which will be a big focus for all of us over the next month. George Knights came into school on Wednesday this week to talk to students about Special Options which are accredited courses which run at different sites. There are a wide variety of courses on offer from Construction and Childcare to Digital Media to name but a few. Mr Jones then spoke to students in assembly on Thursday about the three pathways which students will be placed on to help allocate them to the correct course range. Please make a note of the Information Evening for parents and students on Tuesday the 25th of February where you will receive all the information that you need to help you assist your child in making informed choices. Another date for your calendar is Year 9 Subject Evening where you can talk to staff about GCSE courses and which courses are best for your child. This will be held on Thursday the 5th of March from 4:30pm to 7:30pm. Both these evenings are really important and I urge you to make sure that you clear your diary for these dates.

February 2020 YEAR 10 As we reach the half-way point of this academic year I would like to congratulate all of the Year 10s who have made an excellent start to their GCSEs and taken advantage of the extra-curricular activities available.

Careers

Careers interviews have continued this term and the feedback we have received has been very positive. The students have been enthusiastic when discussing their career and study prospects for after Glebelands and we hope that the advice and guidance they have received will be useful to both students and parents.

Preparations for Work Experience Week are also well underway. Please keep an eye out for future communication regarding this as there will be further paperwork to complete before placements are finalised and it is important that all deadlines are met to avoid disappointment.

Mindset Mentoring

I would like to thank all of the Year 10s who have volunteered to be a part of the Mindset Mentoring Scheme. Students have completed training sessions that will allow them to coach younger students to develop positive behaviour for learning. These coaching sessions will be invaluable to some of our younger students, as well as helping the Y10s to reflect carefully on what would help them to become outstanding learners!

Commendations and Concerns

10PSC are still leading the commendations race, but congratulations also go to the first students to reach 50 commendations so far this year:

Nell Silver Emma Booth Frida Domoney-Gardner Isaac Holt Ellie McConaghey

Currently Year 10s are receiving a high number of concerns for not doing homework. Please support us in improving this by helping your son/daughter check Insight to stay organised and encouraging them to do their homework away from distractions.

Attendance

A final congratulations goes to those students who have achieved 100% attendance for the first half of this year! Attendance remains one of the most important factors in your son/daughter’s academic achievement and I hope this will continue to improve for all students.

February 2020 Year 11

It was good to see Year 11 students returning to school with renewed vigour and a positive attitude after their Christmas break; they have certainly had a busy start to 2020. January 8th saw the first Year 11 exam in i-Media, whilst D.T. and Art students have been working hard on the non-examinable components of their courses. This week, the English Department have been conducting the Speaking and Listening tests where students are filmed whilst they present and answer questions about a subject of their choice. As individual subjects’ syllabuses are completed, revision activities are beginning in earnest and a number of students are already attending lunchtime and after school “boost” sessions.

When we return after February half term, GCSE Exam timetables will be available to students. We are also holding an important INFORMATION EVENING for parents and students on TUESDAY 10TH MARCH where key dates and plans for the lead up to the exams will be announced.

Enrichment Activities this half term:

 Interview Day

On the 10th January students were given the opportunity to have practice interviews with members of the business community who very kindly volunteered their time and expertise for the day. Each student had two interviews over the course of the day, with the opportunity to make improvements between the first and second interview following feedback. Our students were very smart and were an absolute credit to the school with the professional way they conducted themselves. Here are some of the comments we received from the interviewers: “Thanks for a great day. I enjoyed the process and seeing the students and how they reacted” “Heart-warming to see such positivity from the students” “I work in HR; the students were stronger than many adults I interview” “Many of the students were very well prepared for this scenario and had very strong personalities and confidence.”

“What a great bunch of students!”

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Well done to the Year 7 Girls Basketball Team who competed at the area tournament at George Abbot finishing in 3rd place out of six teams. The team displayed excellent skill as they dribbled up the court to their basket, in particular Anouk McCann and Ava Bushnell who maintained possession under enormous pressure from the defence. Sofiya Treskin and Livi Stovold contributed to the overall baskets scored during the tournament with Ava Bushnell our top point scorer. Sarah Gosling and Liv Court played effectively throughout all games in both attacking and defensive roles. Losing just two games (2 – 0 Guildford County, 8 – 4 St Peters) the team drew 8 – 8 against Woolmer Hill and won their matches against George Abbot with Year 7 Basketball Team an impressive 8 – 0 score and against Broadwater 6 – 4. An excellent performance from all players!

U14 Girls v Broadwater The girls played against Broadwater losing a close match 20-14. Sophie S scoring most of the Glebelands points, Kacy and Frankie also scoring points. The girls showed some great skill and are developing well, it is great to see them applying the skills and tactics learnt in lessons to extra-curricular games. V George Abbot

February 2020 GIRLS FOOTBALL

Year 7 tournament

The year 7 football team came 4th in their district tournament, there were some very competitive games against George Abbot, Broadwater, Woolmer Hill, in which the girls showed how hard they have been working in training and were unlucky not to win all 3, beating Broadwater by 3 goals to nil, losing 2-1 to George Abbot and 2-0 to Woolmer Hill. We also played against Rodborough and St Peters who both had girls that play out of school to a good level. The girl’s performances grew each game as they found their positions and looked to pass the ball around the opposition, which they Year 7 Football Team did with success. The team should be really proud of themselves and how they performed during their first tournament on grass. Year 7 and 8 football

The combined year 7 and 8 team played an indoor tournament with Broadwater and Rodborough, they were fantastic and worked really well as a team, they beat Broadwater 6-3, with goals from Josie, Charlotte and Anouk, but lost to Rodborough 5-1, finishing second overall. The girls played really well and it was great to see them working really hard as a team. Player of the tournament Josie. Future Fixtures: Thursday 27th Feb (H) Year 7/8 vs George Abbot

Tuesday 24th March (A) Year 7 vs Broadwater

NETBALL

The Year 7 A and B Teams played Rodborough indoors due to poor weather on the 16th January. Both teams worked effectively as a team, particularly in the centre court where they were able to turn over the ball and gain possession on several occasions. Well done to Ava Bushnell for her successful shot in the 2nd half of A team’s game, and to Liv Court and Pia Barter who both played effectively in defence. Sadly we were unable to match the shooting abilities of Year 7 A and B Netball Teams Rodborough and both teams lost Glebelands Newsletter

February 2020 their games. However, both teams were commended for their positivity and perseverance throughout a very challenging match!

Vs Broadwater

The year 7 netball team also played against Broadwater and won 16-7. The game was fast paced with Glebelands moving the ball between the team well and creating ample space to move past their opposition. Superb shooting from Ava and Anouk, and fab passing from Pia, Sofiya and Sarah into the goal third for Ava and Anouk. There was also good Year 7 Netball Squad defence from the whole team which enabled us to turn over the ball and attack again. Well played girls.

BOYS BASKETBALL RESULTS

U14 v Rodborough

This was a great game with the boys having to work hard to overcome a 10 point deficit in the first half. Defensively they played particularly well in the second half and also opened up the Rodborough defence effectively with great movement off the ball and some very good driving lay ups from Oscar, Alfie, Max and Louis in particular. The boys eventually on 28-24 after over time

There was some excellent batting at times from James and Milo and Teddy who also fielded well, but the boys failed to score enough runs and decision making and shot selection let them down ultimately. The results did not go there way with the boys losing their matches meaning that they did not get through to the play offs. Thank you Mr. Sanctuary for taking the team. February 2020 ICELAND TRIP

Amazing. To sum up our trip, that word fits perfectly. I’m sure all who embarked on the annual endeavour to Iceland will all agree that this was the best experience of our lives so far. Despite some wobbles along the way, the staff and students alike all handled the events with an outstanding degree of decorum and maturity. After a groggy start early Friday morning, an excited group of students congregated outside Glebelands, with heavy luggage in their hands and excited chatter in their mouths. We arrived at Heathrow at about 5:45, and subsequently coursed through customs leaving us to explore the many extravagant shops in Terminal 5. Touching down at midday, we left the airport at around 1pm, and after meeting our lovely tour guide, Nick; and our amazing coach driver, Pete; we set off to our first destination, the mid-Atlantic ridge. To say we were in Pandemonium for our first taste of Iceland would be an understatement. Despite the harsh, Arctic weather, nothing could dampen our spirits as we meandered excitedly between the two plates in the wind and sleet. Unfortunately, to some students’ disappointment, the black sand between the ridge was unable to keep hold in the shape of a sand castle.

Our next stop was at a magnificent Hot spring, billowing out copious amounts of steam to all our wonder. Next on the agenda was the Blue Lagoon, a notorious, must-see tourist spot. The pool was incredibly warm, and was extremely mineral rich, allowing us to completely relax after a long day’s travel.

Following a peaceful night at the hostel, we set off for another day on the coach to our next sight – a majestic waterfall, then another. These two spectacles of nature were incredibly breath taking and we were all in awe of the sheer size of these two great feats of Iceland. Afterwards, we were once again on the coach and off to the glacier for a spot of climbing. All suited up and ready to go, we set off towards the glacier. It was absolutely sublime, and despite the cold we loved every minute of it.

Glebelands Newsletter

February 2020 Following on from the climbing, we embarked to our next hotel, in the wild Icelandic countryside. There we all could relax and watch beat Scotland in Six Nations (sorry to any Scottish Rugby fans). The next day, we started our trip to a black beach producing some magnificent waves, and a perfect photo opportunity! Afterwards, we set off on the coach to visit the Lava Museum, which was not only visually stunning but also massively informative about the tectonic activity underneath Iceland. Moving swiftly on, we travelled to yet another majestic waterfall, which backed onto the wall of the North American plate.

Moving onto our new hotel, we prepared for a much-anticipated trip to the Hamburger Factory, which was well worth the wait, as the food was second to none and was a brilliant end to the trip. Unfortunately, due to heavy overcast, we were unable to see the northern lights, so after the meal we headed back to the hotel.

Early next morning, we awoke quickly from our beds to prepare our luggage to be loaded into the coach for one last stop before our flight home. Somewhat ironically, it was a flight simulation and it was extremely exhilarating seeing Iceland in all its stupendous glory. After that eye-opening experience, we headed off to the airport to return home.

In conclusion, I think the students and staff alike can all agree that the trip to Iceland was tremendously profound and eye-opening, a trip which will hold a special place in our hearts forever. I just want to take this time to thank, firstly our parents for paying for this trip to go ahead, and the determined teachers who put up with all our antics for 4 days.

February 2020 UPDATES FROM THE NEW SCHOOL COUNCIL

Since our School Council Elections, our Tutor Representatives have started the year by gathering views and suggestions from the student body. Then the new team (as listed below) met for the first time on 21st January. Points discussed in each Year Council ranged widely from journals to toilets and uniform regulations to dining hall routines. However, the resounding theme across every year group was environmental issues, especially the will to cut back on waste and the use of plastics. Therefore, the good work and research produced by the last School Council’s Leadership Team will be picked up and continued by the new Eco- Committee. Two further sub-committees have been set up for Fundraising and PETaL (for Premises, Education, Teaching and Learning). This week the hardworking School Council Leadership Team brought these collated suggestions to SLT and a further productive discussion ensued. Mr. Mitchell was very impressed with the professional manner in which the salient points and their potential solutions were presented. The entire SLT team are fully on board with the drive to reduce plastic usage and food waste around the school. We will see some changes happening in the dining hall and further recycling bins will be purchased to facilitate recycling beyond the existing classroom bins. Further long-term commitments include the eventual installation of more water fountains, which will in turn lead to greater use of re-fillable water bottles rather than disposable cups. Other simple changes to improve the school premises, such as more bag racks outside the dining hall and in the changing rooms are also being considered. It is still early days for many of these changes but I have been very proud of the responsible start that our School Council has made. I look forward to continuing to work with this excellent team of students and for Glebelands to make strides towards becoming a much more environmentally committed school. School Council 2020

MINDSET MENTORS Following on from the successes of last year’s Mindset Mentoring scheme, the new team of Year 10 Mentors have completed their training and will be ready to start their duties in March. Here are most of them, having just received their shiny new purple badges! The Mindset Mentor scheme provides a leadership opportunity for students in year 10 who will be supporting some of our younger students on areas such as developing a Growth Mindset, resilience, organisation and other positive skills or routines. The training sessions have allowed this fantastic team of 26 to practise some coaching techniques and learn how students can change their mindsets to tap into their own full potentials. I am sure this cohort will provide excellent support to some of our Year 7 and Year 8 students and that the experience will once again prove to be beneficial and empowering for all the students involved.

COMMUNITY STEM WEEK 2020

Our Community STEM Week 2020 was a huge success this year, with over 240 pupils from 9 primary schools attending over three days in January. They had the challenge of being structural engineers for the day, building working lighthouses! Teams learnt all about structures and electronics and used this in their teams to build some amazing towers! Well done to the following winning teams: The Mad Scientists 1 on Monday morning, Cranleigh 1 on Monday afternoon, Big Brains on Tuesday and Aurora Borealis on Wednesday.

SAFEGUARDING REMINDER: Please bear in mind, if you sign up for these sites, and don't tell the truth about your age, that information may follow you on social media. For example, if you sign up for Facebook aged 8, stating you are 13, by the time you are actually 13, both Facebook and the outside world will believe you are 18. Would parents be happy with their 13 year old children receiving content and messages aimed at 18 year olds?

February 2020 CORONOVIRUS

The media is currently rife with updates on coronavirus and many of our students have been asking about this epidemic. As parents consider travelling during the half term break, I urge you to consider carefully the countries you are travelling to and ensure that precautions are in place.

Without wishing to underestimate the seriousness of this virus, the current risk to the UK population has been assessed as ‘low’ by the Chief Medical Officer. Parents should be reassured that the UK is well prepared to deal with any cases of coronavirus that arise and we are one of the first countries in the world to have developed an accurate test for coronavirus, with the ability to scale up this test should the virus be detected in the UK. The NHS has expert teams in every ambulance service, and specialist hospital units with highly trained staff and equipment ready to receive and care for patients with any highly infectious disease, including coronavirus. As it is winter, most respiratory illnesses in the UK are due to the common cold and other viruses, including influenza, for which existing health guidance should continue to be followed. We have however been advised, that any pupils who display symptoms should be excluded from the school until they have consulted a clinician and this advice would be the same for seasonal influenza. February 2020 ABSENCE FROM SCHOOL

For all absences whether sickness or appointments, please contact the school’s dedicated 24 hour absence line on 01483 542408 ideally before 8.45am. A truancy call will be sent upon any unknown student absence via an automated system until a call to the absence line is made.

Wherever possible please notify the school in advance of any medical or dental appointments by emailing [email protected]. Please remember to write a note in your child's journal to confirm the absence in order for the class teacher to release your child from their lesson.

All students must sign in and out of Student Services for health and safety purposes.

We would like to draw your attention to taking holiday on the last day of term, although the students are only in school until 12:35 they are registered before they leave and therefore receive an afternoon session mark, this means that the last day of term is considered a full day in terms of absence.

Application for Leave of Absence for Exceptional Circumstances

Please read the following guidance carefully.

As parents, you have a legal responsibility to ensure your child’s attendance at school. During the academic year, pupils are at school for 190 days and at home for 175 days.

Please be aware that The Education (Pupil Registration) (England) (Amendment) Regulations 2013, which became law on 1 September 2013, state that Headteachers may not grant any leave of absence during term time unless there are exceptional circumstances. The Headteacher is also required to determine the number of school days a child can be away from school if leave is granted.

If you want to take your child out of school you will need to complete and submit our Application for Leave of Absence for Exceptional Circumstances Form, which your child can get from their Head of Achievement. Once the form is completed it should be returned to your child’s Head of Achievement – one form per child. The form will then be submitted to the Headteacher to consider your request for your child’s leave of absence for exceptional circumstances. The Headteacher will consider the reasons for the request carefully and will notify you of the decision. For further information, please refer to our School Attendance Policy. We may ask for proof to back up your request.

Unauthorised absence of 5 days or more may result in the issue of a Penalty Notice Penalty Notices are issued by the Local Authority in accordance with Surrey County Council’s Code of Conduct. The Penalty Notice is £60, per child per parent/carer, if paid within 21 days or £120 if paid after 21 days but within 28 days. Failure to pay the Penalty Notice will result in you being served a summons to appear at the Magistrates Court. Glebelands Newsletter
