Glebelands Newsletter Glebelands Newsletter February 2020 MESSAGE FROM THE HEADTEACHER As we come to the half-way point in the academic year, for me it is a time to reflect. I am really encouraged by the work going on in lessons and I feel students are, on the whole, working exceptionally hard. At the beginning of term our Year 11 students received their mock grades. These were strong although all students will have areas to work on. The challenge for all these students is to learn from the mock results and work even harder to improve in their final 12 weeks. I would like to thank all their parents for their support in helping the students achieve their best. It is encouraging to see the number of parents who attended our Subject Evenings for Year 7 and 11 (over 90% for each year group). Clearly these are some of the best opportunities for parents to understand how they can support their child’s learning, and I would ask all parents to make these a priority as we need your support if your children/our students are to make the progress of which they are capable. Together we can achieve more. Early next half term, the GCSE options process begins for our Year 9 students. Information Evening is on the 25th of February (1st Tuesday after half term). I urge all parents to attend, as this is an evening where the process is explained fully and will help you in supporting your child to make good option choices for Years 10 and 11. We are delighted with how many students are benefiting from the extra-curricular activities which are available to them. The numbers are greater than ever before attending weekly sessions in Art, Drama, DT, Science, Music and sports. I am delighted to see students participate in our fledgling teams of Hockey and Rugby and am excited about tennis beginning next term. Last week saw many of the Year 11 students embark on a school trip to Iceland. The students were fantastic ambassadors for the school and I was very jealous every time I went on Instagram seeing how much they enjoyed it. This week sees some other students going on a ski trip with the school. These are great experiences for students and I would like to thank our staff for giving of their time to offer these opportunities. As a school we will continue to work hard for all our students and are continually looking at ways to improve facilities and opportunities. I wish everyone a restful half term. Thank you for all your continued support. Mr R Mitchell Glebelands Newsletter February 2020 YEAR 7 Welcome to the Year 7 section of the newsletter. Year 7 have continued with their positive work ethos and motivation since returning from the Christmas break. Extra-curricular clubs provide opportunities to develop skills and understanding, to make new friends and represent the school. Many Year 7’s have taken opportunities to get involved with a range of clubs such as Science and Art, are involved with Sporting fixtures such as netball, football, hockey, basketball and many have been attending rehearsals for the school production of Les Miserables every Friday after school. Science Club Friday 3.15-4.15pm Sports Teams Indoor Athletics, Basketball, Football and Netball Glebelands Newsletter February 2020 Students with 100% Attendance: On the whole attendance within this year group is very good, a positive 97.3%. However, when attendance drops below 90% for individuals this can be worrying and sometimes referrals are made to the Educational Inclusion Officer. There are genuine reasons for some absence from school and ill health cannot be avoided. However, if a student misses just one day a week every week in an academic year, this accounts for 20% of their education being missed. It is essential that students are in school as much as possible and ensure that they are proactive in catching up on missed work. I am very pleased to congratulate 43 students that have achieved 100% attendance since September, this is a fantastic achievement – well done! Tutor group attendance percentages, as I write, are as follows: Tutor Group Totals 7LMA 97.7% 7CSP 97.8% 7TOM 96.8% 7SAS 96.3% 7GJR 97.8% Students with the Highest Number of Commendations: Students in Year 7 are working really hard to receive commendations from their teachers. They receive letters and certificates once they reach various milestones at 25, 50, 75 and 100 commendations. Students who have reached 100+ commendations are Anouk McCann, Toby Ford, Sarah Gosling, Harrison Capewell, Louise Gilbey, Olivia Stovold, Amelie Burch, Ava Bushnell, Callum Stevens, Arthur Shimell, Kassa Singhateh, Zaibaa Chowdhury, Isabelle Roker, Noah Watts, Nicole Tickner and Theor Salvador – many congratulations. Tutor group commendation totals, as I write, are as follows: Tutor Group Totals 7LMA 1171 7CSP 1744 7TOM 1617 7SAS 1594 7GJR 1402 Half Term Achievement and Effort Certificates: Each half term a certificate and a small prize are given to student who are nominated by their teachers for excellent effort in a subject area or great achievement. Congratulations to the students who have been recognised and awarded this half term. There was excellent attendance and the evening was full of praise for the hard work from the year group as well as important areas of improvement to challenge progress. I would like to take the opportunity to encourage attendance at Homework Club afterschool 3.15-4.30pm. For any students who need to access a computer, printer and support for completing homework, this club provides that facility. Congratulations to all students who have been mentioned in this edition! I recognise the hard work and achievements of all students in the year group. Myself and the tutor team would like to thank you for your support so far this this academic year. Miss O Jones Head of Achievement Year 7 Glebelands Newsletter February 2020 YEAR 8 Another really busy half term has seen students taking part in a variety of activities around the school. It was superb to see so many students taking a leadership role in STEM week working with other schools. We have a few students in the school production. There have been quite a few sports fixtures too. Amelia Watts and Willow Harrison-Fudge went to Cranleigh School for the afternoon to see and listen to the prestigious organ in the Chapel. They said “it was a really good comfortable atmosphere when playing. We really enjoyed learning about the history of the organ and more about Phil Scriven, the organist. We came away feeling inspired and it will encourage us to continue with piano. We may even take up the organ!” This week was subject prizes assembly. The following students were awarded for their effort or achievement in a subject: Katie Donoghue Jessica Jones Joshua Davies Lucy Smith James Whitworth Ella Radley Ruby Templeman Sam Oltman Milo MacVicar Scarlett Irving Zsuzsanna Szabo Emily Tuthill Evie Marriott Tia Griffin Brooke Mills Freddie Webb Abbie Mains Lizzie Crossman Daisy Dighton Josie Ridler Theo Van Praagh Sadie Squires Thomas Perry Max Lowe Henry Maskell Amelia Tyrell Amelia Watts Mia Templeman Aria Giles Joseph Gilks Will Gosden Martha Mariscotti- Oscar Jupp Ree The following students have 100% attendance, which is a fantastic achievement: Ilse Bishop Jessica Jenking Teddy Perry Ewan Chamberlain Katherine Large Thomas Perry Florence Cox Isaac Lawrence Josie Ridler Grace Denton Jessica Lewis Florence Seebold Cara Desmond Rebecca Lovegrove Georgina Storey Noah Diverall-Harmer Grace Lumbard Mia Templeman Katie Donoghue Milo MacVicar William Turnbull William Flatau Ben McGowan Emily Tuthill Joseph Gilks Isabel Mort Benjamin Watson William Gosden Kathryn O’Nions James Whitworth Harry Harwood Godwin Orioha Congratulations to Hamish McInnes for achieving 100+ commendations. The second half of the term is equally busy, including reports being issued in March. Mr D Nibloe Head of Achievement Year 8 Glebelands Newsletter February 2020 YEAR 9 Year 9 made a great start to their Spring term at Glebelands. We have had a very busy term with lots of activities and trips taking place. I am pleased that Year 9 students are improving their attendance and punctuality as we progress into this term. Please try to make sure students are in on time, we expect them to be in tutor time by 8:45am each morning ready to start their day. We have been having a big focus on uniform and being smartly dressed and will be continued to check students after we return from half term. Please note the rules on haircuts/ skin fades/ dye colour and fake nails/ gels etc. as we always have a few things to sort out after a holiday it seems. I have been extremely pleased to see students continuing to participate in extra- curricular activities such as Choir, Rock Choir, Orchestra, Robotics, Football and Art Clubs. Our P.E department have been extremely busy with tournaments and fixtures and you will find all those details later in this newsletter.

Waverley Federation Special Options Booklet 2019- 2021 Working Together to Raise Achievement Dear Student, Waverley Federation This prospectus gives information about the courses offered by the Waverley Federation as part of your options choice. All of these courses take place on Tuesdays throughout years 10 and 11. It also explains the application procedures and expectations to which you would need to agree should you be successful in your application. A good education is the key to better life chances, equipping you with the knowledge, skills and attitudes to succeed in further learning, work, and opening the door to greater prosperity and wider opportunities. As a federation we are working collaboratively with our partner schools and colleges to give you a greater breadth and choice of subjects to study in order that you can design a personalised curriculum which motivates, interests and challenges you. These Special Options are equivalent to GCSE but are taught and assessed in a different way and enable you to study in a more adult environment at a college or specialist training centre. You should take time to consider what options will best suit you, listening to advice from your teachers and researching the possibilities carefully. The number of places available on each course is limited and the application and interview processes are competitive. If you do decide to apply you must ensure that you have also agreed an alternative school-based option should your application for a Waverley course be unsuccessful. Yours faithfully,

The presentation in books shows pride, and with the current Year 11 predicted to achieve record results, the overall progress of students is on a continuing upward trend as the current Year 10 is predicted to be even higher.
