Welcome to Berry Bar and Lounge Welcome to Berry Bar and Lounge We would like to introduce you to two English traditions. Gin Gin is synonymous with London. In the early 1700’s more than 14 gallons of Gin per person were produced here. Skip to the 1920’s. During this period the modern cocktail hour originated. Gin was at the centre due to the popularity of the Martini. Present day London is once again awash with Gin. The launch of Beefeater 24 and other Premium London Gins have made it the drink to be seen with. Afternoon Tea Afternoon Tea is said to have originated in the 1840’s. Anna, The Duchess of Bedford, often became hungry in the mid afternoon and requested that her maid serve her tea with sandwiches and cakes. Anna began to invite friends to join her and a new social event was born that became increasingly popular with the middle and upper classes. Once introduced to London, Afternoon Tea breathed new life in the social scene and continues to do so to this day. Here at Berry Bar and Lounge we have taken these two British traditions and given them a contemporary makeover fitting for modern day London. Humphrey Bogart in Casablanca “Of all the Gin joints in all the world she had to walk into mine” Welcome, To the Wonderful World of Gin… Gin started life in the early 17th century in Holland, although claims have been made that it was produced prior to this in Italy. WC Fields would start the day with two double martinis, enjoyed either side of his breakfast. He drank about two quarts of gin a day. Every Gin brand has its own unique fragrance; most consumers have probably only tasted a small number of the gin brands available. In ours there are more than 60 different Gin brands, from 9 different countries; offering a wide spectrum of fragrances, using different botanicals and infusion methods in all shapes and sizes. Gin is distilled differently. Premium Gins are distilled 3 to 5 times to remove impurities; each brand has a unique formula that provides its special characteristics. The favourite drink of former President Gerald Ford is Gin and Tonic. Gin is the only alcohol liquor that was first developed as a medicine remedy before it became popular as a social drink. “Mother’s Ruin” a term that came from British soldiers taste for Gin when home on leave from the World War II, and the maternal state it induced in the women who shared their off-duty conviviality. William of Orange prohibited the importing of alcohol to England in the early 18th Century encouraging the production and consumption of English Gin. The excessive consumption that followed gave rise to the name Gin Craze.

The research was led by Dr Justin Schlosberg (Birkbeck) and Dr Glenda Cooper (City),with the assistance of Thomas Chivers, Naomi Smith, Richard Dover and Hannah Sharland. We are in the process of preparing materials for peer-review publication but include here interim findings in view of their relevance to the merger inquiry. 2 I. Executive Summary In phase one of the merger inquiry we submitted new evidence to Ofcom which showed that the market reach, share and impact of major news brands controlled by the merging parties may be significantly greater than previously thought. In particular, our research showed a disproportionate presence of Sky News on intermediary platforms and strongly suggested that Global and Bauer radio stations still rely to some degree on the wholesale news service provided exclusively by Sky (via the Independent Radio News Network). We have now extended that research which reinforces these findings.

Sports Coaching Through the Ages with an Empirical Study of Predictors of Rowing Coaching Effectiveness Cameron Michael Kiosoglous A dissertation submitted to the faculty of the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY IN HUMAN DEVELOPMENT Paul D. Renard (Chair) Gabriella M. Belli Marcie Boucouvalas Clare D. Klunk Friday, April 5, 2013 Falls Church, Virginia. Keywords Professionalization of sport Sports coaching effectiveness and expertise Sports coaching development Evaluating sport coaching success Reflective practices in sport coaching Sports Coaching Through the Ages with an Empirical Study of Predictors of Rowing Coaching Effectiveness Cameron Kiosoglous Abstract Coaching effectiveness is a result of a coach getting the best out of the people and resources in their environment. For coaches, learning from experience is vital in a role that is a complex, dynamic and multifaceted process of balancing fun and winning where one cannot be sure if results will go according to plan. At the Olympic level, due to commercialization more money is being spent than ever before on developing more professional and effective training systems to maximize athletic performances. Medals won determine how a coach is evaluated and with more nations competition at a higher level, success is becoming even more competitive. More qualified and adaptable coaches are required to cope with the demands of international competition. The literature has been extensively examined based on the research question: to what extent is coaching success predicted by a coaches’ ability to self-reflect on past experiences? The purpose of this study was to demonstrate that if coaches who are highly self- reflective and have successful athletic and coaching experiences would be more likely to have future coaching success than those who either were not self-reflective or had less success in the past.

  • Review of Music in Radio Formats
Submission to OFCOM Review of Music in Radio Formats 2 April 2015 Introduction 1. Global is a media and entertainment company comprising Global Radio, Global TV and Global Entertainment (music label, music publishing and artist management). Our brands include Heart, Capital, Classic FM, Smooth, LBC, Gold, XFM and Capital XTRA, broadcasting from 20 broadcast centres across the country to over 23 million listeners every week. 2. When Ofcom published its Call for Inputs, we welcomed the opportunity to comment on a full review of all aspects of Format regulation, which we agreed was much needed. 3. In our response to Ofcom’s Call for Inputs we highlighted the substantial changes that have taken place in the market. The ways in which listeners access music has changed fundamentally since 2008, when formats were last reviewed by Ofcom. Services such as YouTube and Spotify were still in their infancy and digital radio had not yet achieved critical mass. Rajar Midas1 shows that services other than radio now account for nearly a third of audio listening time. A majority of radio listeners now own at least one DAB radio, compared to under one-third in 2008, and digital platforms now account for 38% of total radio listening as compared to just 18% in 2008. 4. We are mindful of the fact that Ofcom must fulfil its statutory duties, but we remain of the view that the legislative regime provides Ofcom with considerable discretion regarding the regulation of music formats in radio, amongst other things. 5. We believe that Ofcom can take reasonable, measured steps to reduce the regulatory burden faced by licensees, which will give stations more flexibility to adapt to changes in listeners’ tastes and which are consistent with Ofcom’s statutory duties.

GLOBAL/GMG MERGER INQUIRY Third party response to the provisional findings 6 March 2013 Global Radio should not be allowed to own Real and Smooth Ltd. and Heart. I do not believe this will increase investment in commercial radio, especially when its main target is national advertisers, not local ones; a friend / contact of mine owns his own car dealer in Rotherham, and had considered advertising on Capital 105, but then realized it was not appropriate as they only want national advertisers. In the end he decided to go for a smaller, rival station that is more local, and thus, can aim more at local advertisers. Many of my friends/contacts in the automobile trade said they would most definitely advertise on radio alongside Internet and print advertising - but they feel it is geared too much towards national advertisers, and that national brands are of little use to them - except in print media, e.g. Auto Trader. Gaining local advertisers is important to the future sustainability of them; getting regional chains like Home Bargains to advertise should be the aim. From my own research into the radio industry, Global Radio is seen as the United Kingdom equivalent of Clear Channel, who were criticised for having too much market share. Smaller groups like UTV, Orion, UKRD, Lincs FM and Quidem cannot afford to compete against the British equivalent of Clear Channel, whose main aim is to target national advertisers. My other issues with this is the Character of Service; Real Radio was originally designed as a full-service station at launch in 1994 when it was 105.4 Century Radio, and this is the same for all Real Radio licences.
