For coaches, learning from experience is vital in a role that is a complex, dynamic and multifaceted process of balancing fun and winning where one cannot be sure if results will go according to plan. At the Olympic level, due to commercialization more money is being spent than ever before on developing more professional and effective training systems to maximize athletic performances. Medals won determine how a coach is evaluated and with more nations competition at a higher level, success is becoming even more competitive. More qualified and adaptable coaches are required to cope with the demands of international competition. The literature has been extensively examined based on the research question: to what extent is coaching success predicted by a coaches’ ability to self-reflect on past experiences? The purpose of this study was to demonstrate that if coaches who are highly self- reflective and have successful athletic and coaching experiences would be more likely to have future coaching success than those who either were not self-reflective or had less success in the past. Coaching knowledge is acquired though experience and the process of learning and self- reflection is an activity that facilitates this process. This study showed that rowing coaching experience and rowing athletic experience are positive predictors of coaching success, albeit weakly so. While self-reflective activities are not predictors of coaching success, self-reflection is an activity that coaches engage in. This study also identified the challenges in measuring coaching success. But like any domain, deliberate practice, which is a known pathway to developing expertise, is an activity that contributes to the professionalization of sports coaching and its advancement as a profession. COACHING THROUGH THE AGES iii Acknowledgements “Becoming a Ph.D.” has been a process of some significant life changes since enrolling at Virginia Tech in the Fall 2002. Like a form of therapy, this research has allowed me to go deep within and explore who I am and what is my life’s purpose. As an example, my father sudden passing on August 10, 2005 has brought a new perspective into my life about being true to myself. A cancer diagnosis on Tuesday, March 30, 2010, has given me a new sense of meaning about what it means to be alive. I have learned to live my life one day at a time. And as my mother taught me, there is one thing that remains when we are gone: “Our memories of each other is what lasts forever.” These acknowledgements are intended to thank all the people that made this possible, just like a bouquet of flowers and a good bottle of wine. To all of my teachers, their patience and love, generosity and support seemed endless and have been an inspiration to me. You are role models that I have attempted to live up to, by trying to be a better person everyday. To my committee and those at Virginia Tech, without whom I would never have been able to survive this journey. Each of you has provided me with the words of direction and inspiration, support and motivation, at times when I needed you most.     CLUB KIWIFRUIT FUND RAISING PICK As reported in Ramblings newsletter, 6th June, 1992. The annual Shallcross kiwifruit pick was once again offered to Tauranga Ramblers to give our funds a much needed boost so that we can subsidise club days, Bar-B-Q’s, Pinto, buses, newsletters and travel to major events. All in all club members receive more than their subscriptions cover, therefore we need full support from all participants for our fund-raising efforts. The club is very appreciative of the chances to earn this money and a special thanks go to Bill and Marge Shallcross for this fruit picking opportunity. It certainly beats selling raffle tickets and gives us the chance to do something other than one’s usual job or studies. It is quite an education especially the way different people see the hairy berries – their shapes and sizes I’ll leave to your imagination. Colin Clifton commented that it was a change from working alone. Teresa Coston was certainly the noisiest and Kristin McLoughlin one of the quietest, but it was good to see everyone turn out. Some brought their spouses, or sons and daughters. Robyn Bint did a great job removing all the kiwifruit stalks. Marge did a great job of keeping the team fed, while Nigel Hines had done an absolutely fantastic job chasing along all members he could find. Over the two days we picked 162 bins compared to 166 last year. Unfortunately we couldn’t quite finish but Ramblers received $1400.00 for the two day’s work. Once again special thanks to Bill, Marge, Debbie, Russell, Rob Shallcross and his in-laws and to Nigel and Sheryl Hines for their organisation.

In school, he ran and boxed, but was most interested in rugby football. Because of the Great Depression of the 1920’s, Lydiard dropped out of school at 16 to work in a shoe factoryc. Lydiard figured he was pretty fit until Jack Dolan, president of the Lynndale Athletic Club in Auckland and an old man compared to Lydiard, took him on a five-mile training jog. Lydiard was completely exhausted and was forced to rethink his concept of fitness. He wondered what he would feel like at 47, if at 27 he was exhausted by a five-mile run. Lydiard began training according to the methods of the time, but this only confused him further. At the club library he found a book by F.W. Webster called “The Science of Athletics.” But Lydiard soon decided that the schedules offered by Webster were being too easy on him, so he began experimenting to find out how fit he could get.

  • Origins of the Cambridge Blue
    ORIGINS OF THE CAMBRIDGE BLUE Improved communications in the early years of the 19th century made possible sporting competitions between such as Oxford and Cambridge, which led in turn to the adoption of different colours, if only to allow the umpire to recognise them. The first sporting competition between the universities was on June 4th 1827 in a cricket match at Lord’s. Both teams wore white with no distinguishing colour. The second competition was the first Boat Race at Henley-on-Thames on 10th June 1829 when Oxford wore dark blue and white striped shirts. The colour was in honour of Christ Church, Head of the River at the time, who provided no fewer than five members of the crew. It is well documented that this race is the origin of the Oxford dark blue. Cambridge wore white shirts with hunting pink ties or sashes in honour of Snow, the Captain of Cambridge and of the Lady Margaret (St John’s College) Boat Club. For the second race in 1836, according to contemporary accounts (e.g. Bell’s Life), Cambridge wore white with no adornment. In 1837 and 1838 there were no intervarsity boat races but Cambridge raced against Leander Club and in both races they wore light blue and white striped shirts. For the third Boat Race in 1839 they adopted light blue, thereby establishing the accepted CUBC colour, and serially the Cambridge colour as each new sport has entered the intervarsity competitive programme. The story behind the adoption of light blue did not appear in print until 1881, almost half a century after the event.
