Abstract This work seeks to determine the nature of Word of Faith (WOF) teaching and practice of healing, and that nature in relation to the incidence of the blessing of divine healing within the WOF. The alleged anomaly of metaphysical (when ‘metaphysical’ is defined as Mind- Cure) teaching and practice embedded within WOF teaching and practice of healing is assessed. Amongst surveys of the WOF examined was Dan McConnell’s A Different Gospel having as its central tenet the claim that healing in the WOF is a ‘wolf in sheep’s clothing;’ that is, that its source is not divine as it claims, but rather derived from Mind-Cure (particularly Christian Science and New Thought, which McConnell defines as ‘metaphysical’) and so is demonic in practice. This research into both claimed Christian origins of the WOF and also into Mind- Cure helps establish the true origins of healing in the WOF, suggesting it to be a continuance of evangelical divine healing evangelism, such as practiced by Carrie Judd Montgomery. That is, the WOF is found heavily influenced by leading personalities of the nineteenth century Divine Healing Movement in the United States, like Carrie Judd Montgomery, personalities who also straddle Modern Pentecostalism’s development. The research revealed that argument put forward for the Mind-Cure metaphysical’s influence within the WOF, even argument for the Mind-Cure metaphysical’s fundamental existence within the WOF, seems to be not only tenuous, but even specious. However, a serious shortcoming with WOF teaching and practice of healing has been identified. This identified shortcoming is failure to emphasise the reported biblical stipulation for all to, at least, help the poor on a regular basis. Comparison was made between divine healing in the WOF and divine healing as encountered within books comprising the Holy Bible content agreed following the Council of Nicea (AD 325), sometimes called the ‘content of the Protestant Bible.’ 1 The research identifies discrepancies between divine healing as taught and practised in the WOF, on the one hand, and between the subject of divine healing as contextualised within the Holy Bible, on the other. The research suggests that problems with the model of divine healing of the WOF will be partly rectified by teaching obedience to the biblical commandment, and particularly the New Testament commandment, to at least regularly help the poor thereby avoiding an outworking of the biblical condemnation of those not helping the poor. The research suggests incidence of the blessing of divine healing in the WOF is prevented by the failure of the WOF to teach this commandment to Christian believers that they regularly help/bless the poor : for those not showing lovingkindness in, at least, helping the poor on a regular basis there will be decreased incidence of the lovingkindness of God’s blessing of divine healing experienced. 1 That is : “Today the [ Old Testament ] canon exists in two main forms : that found in the Hebrew Bible, followed by Jews, Protestants and some Orthodox churches, and that found in the Septuagint, which includes the Apocrypha, followed by Roman Catholics and also some Orthodox churches...the thirty-ninth Paschal [ Easter ] Letter of Athanasius, metropolitan of Alexandria, written in 367 CE,...listed all the books of the present New Testament.” ( Bruce M. Apart from occasional use of sic, and vice versa, I complied with the request to remove all Latin from the thesis - the sole exception being one phrase in chapter four, where an English translation is provided in parentheses. To aid the reader I left the large number of newspaper, journal, and other periodical names unabbreviated. The King James translation of the Bible (last revised in 1767, so more modern than the still-read English of Shakespeare’s plays) is the preferred translation in both the nineteenth century U. S. Divine Healing Movement and also in most WOF material, despite the availability of more recent English translations of the Bible. This project recognises that in making it the default bible translation used. However, I have found it helpful to also resort to Jay Green’s The Interlinear Bible, and his KJ3 Literal Translation (2008), also specifying the Revised Standard Version and other Bible translations when used. WC Fields would start the day with two double martinis, enjoyed either side of his breakfast. He drank about two quarts of gin a day. Every Gin brand has its own unique fragrance; most consumers have probably only tasted a small number of the gin brands available. In ours there are more than 60 different Gin brands, from 9 different countries; offering a wide spectrum of fragrances, using different botanicals and infusion methods in all shapes and sizes. Gin is distilled differently. Premium Gins are distilled 3 to 5 times to remove impurities; each brand has a unique formula that provides its special characteristics. The favourite drink of former President Gerald Ford is Gin and Tonic. Gin is the only alcohol liquor that was first developed as a medicine remedy before it became popular as a social drink. “Mother’s Ruin” a term that came from British soldiers taste for Gin when home on leave from the World War II, and the maternal state it induced in the women who shared their off-duty conviviality. William of Orange prohibited the importing of alcohol to England in the early 18th Century encouraging the production and consumption of English Gin. The excessive consumption that followed gave rise to the name Gin Craze.

    The Prosperity Gospel of Coronavirus Response Paul A. Djupe, Denison University Ryan P. Burge, Eastern Illinois University Abstract The sweep of the coronavirus pandemic across the world and United States offers an almost unparalleled opportunity to study how social systems cope with the threat and opportunities for collective action. In this paper we draw on survey data collected as the US flailed in response and before a general consensus among executive office-holders developed in the following weeks. In particular, we assess how holding prosperity gospel views strongly shaped perceptions of the virus and state responses to the virus. Research on the prosperity gospel is slowly expanding, and this paper helps to highlight some missing dimensions. At a time when concerted action for the social good could be uniting the country, prosperity gospel beliefs systematically undermine that possibility by augmenting threat, raising outgroup anxiety, and decreasing social trust. In this paper, we ask what drives reactions to the coronavirus, with a focus on one rapidly growing religious belief system – the Prosperity Gospel. This belief system is particularly well tuned to trigger a strong reaction to the societal response to the spread of the coronavirus.

    Faith Healing in Christianity and Islam: A Comparative Analysis A dissertation submitted to the Islamic College in collaboration with Middlesex University in accordance with the requirements of the degree of MA in Islamic Studies in the Faculty of Health and Education September 2015 Word Count: 13,550 I. Abstract This study explores the development and modalities of faith healing as manifested in Christianity and Islam. The purpose is not to inflame or take sides in the debates surrounding the phenomenon, but rather to enable each faith to learn from the experiences of the other. A further goal is to provide medical practitioners and others with a better understanding of faith healing, thereby enabling them to productively address the phenomenon within Christian and Muslim contexts. Faith healing in Christianity is not the same as faith healing among Muslims. Despite their differences, however, the two varieties share certain core principles. Identifying these is a chief aim of this paper, and the contexts within which faith healers of both religions practice also will be examined. Grounded Theory is used to analyze prior academic work on faith healing with the aim of comparing how the phenomenon is manifested in Christianity and Islam, as well as in drawing conclusions about and implications of the phenomenon with respect to conventional medical practitioners. Credible research assessing faith healing across social or religious boundaries is rare. Moreover, the academic landscape is not immune to bias and the lenses through which one might assess a work’s objectivity can be opaque. Compounding the problem, some of what exists at the popular level has been written either by enthusiasts or skeptics, casting doubt on its objectivity and limiting its utility.

The connection between religious beliefs and health has always interested me, but it has not always been a clear or understandable one. In my work as a family doctor and my life as a Christian, I have certainly seen my share of healthy sinners as well as very sick saints. Life does not seem fair in some of these cases, but there is a palpable difference between religious and non-religious people when they are faced with a crisis in their health. They differ in how they view themselves and their illness, and how they cope with their situation. This difference is seen in a story that I recently came across about a woman named Mrs. Bernard. Religion, Illness and Mrs. Bernard Harold Koenig, in Is Religion Good for Your Health?, 1 tells the story of Mrs.

Agenda leading p. 15 Acknowledgements and declaration This submission is based partly on original research commissioned by Avaaz and carried out by researchers based at Birkbeck College and City, University of London between June and September 2017. The research was led by Dr Justin Schlosberg (Birkbeck) and Dr Glenda Cooper (City),with the assistance of Thomas Chivers, Naomi Smith, Richard Dover and Hannah Sharland. We are in the process of preparing materials for peer-review publication but include here interim findings in view of their relevance to the merger inquiry. 2 I. Executive Summary In phase one of the merger inquiry we submitted new evidence to Ofcom which showed that the market reach, share and impact of major news brands controlled by the merging parties may be significantly greater than previously thought. In particular, our research showed a disproportionate presence of Sky News on intermediary platforms and strongly suggested that Global and Bauer radio stations still rely to some degree on the wholesale news service provided exclusively by Sky (via the Independent Radio News Network). We have now extended that research which reinforces these findings.
