The Prosperity Gospel of Coronavirus Response Paul A. Djupe, Denison University Ryan P. Burge, Eastern Illinois University Abstract The sweep of the coronavirus pandemic across the world and United States offers an almost unparalleled opportunity to study how social systems cope with the threat and opportunities for collective action. In this paper we draw on survey data collected as the US flailed in response and before a general consensus among executive office-holders developed in the following weeks. In particular, we assess how holding prosperity gospel views strongly shaped perceptions of the virus and state responses to the virus. Research on the prosperity gospel is slowly expanding, and this paper helps to highlight some missing dimensions. At a time when concerted action for the social good could be uniting the country, prosperity gospel beliefs systematically undermine that possibility by augmenting threat, raising outgroup anxiety, and decreasing social trust. Tony Spell (qtd. in Seipel 2020) At the time of writing, the coronavirus is sweeping the world with over one million cases and tens of thousands dead; the United States tops both counts. In the face of the pandemic, some congregations are still meeting in person (or think they should be) with an apparent devil-may-care attitude. In this paper, we ask what drives reactions to the coronavirus, with a focus on one rapidly growing religious belief system – the Prosperity Gospel. This belief system is particularly well tuned to trigger a strong reaction to the societal response to the spread of the coronavirus. -

Starting from The Fellowship Foundation founded in the USA in the 1930s and looking at similar and interconnected developments in various countries from South America, Africa, and Europe, the article explores theological foundations of today's world- wide ascend of fascism. Using the example of Anders Behring Breivik’sfamous terrorist attack in Norway, it explores theoretical background for Alt-Right attacks on political correctness and ‘cultural Marxism’. Looking into the 'end of the world' theology and its morality, the article explains deep relationships between Christian fundamentalist prosperity theology and Israel. The article connects Christianity’s forward-looking, linear view of history with ‘end of the world’ theology and capitalism. It explores the postdigital and post-truth nature of evangelical Christians’ public communications and links them to various anti- intellectualist tendencies such as the anti-vaccination movement. Using insights from Marxism, critical pedagogy, and liberation theology, the article demystifies Christian fundamentalist theology and points towards opportunites for resistance. This study analyzes how it is marketed at Oasis Church in Hollywood, California, Lakewood Church in Houston, Texas, and Victory Family Church in Cranberry Township, Pennsylvania. The dissertation examines how these churches market Prosperity Theology online and offline to determine the themes and emphases of their messages, whether the content changes based on the audience, if the audience is affecting the presentation of the message, and, if so, in what ways. Included in this investigation is rhetorical analysis of the sermons, websites, and Twitter posts of the pastors to determine themes that emerge in their presentations. -

It is practical, in that it must be of service to the Universal Church and the faithful. It is incomplete in that it is always but a fragment—a small contribution to a long ongoing dialogue. The spirit of this work can be summed up in the words of Karl Barth: “The gospel is not a truth among other truths. Rather, it sets a question-mark against all truths.”1 In this fragment, I will begin with liberal Protestant theology and Barth, and I will end with the Church today, remembering that the Gospel of Christ holds a question-mark against this and all theological endeavors. -

A problem surfaces when the prosperity that is promised does not materialize to all members of the congregation. In examining the validity of this teaching, extensive writings, books, articles and sermons by leading proponents, have been reviewed. Additionally, interviews with at least one hundred pastors inform this writing. The purpose of the research is to furnish contemporary, active insight to this project. The conclusion of this writer is that the prosperity gospel offers an unbalanced application of scripture, which results in a departure from a clear biblical orientation for articulating the doctrine of Jesus Christ. -

INTRODUCTION The ’theology of prosperity’ – the belief that God bestows material blessings on the faithful – is one of the most dynamic movements in Latin American Neo-Pentecostalism today. This ’theology’ – as much aspirational strategy as actual teleology – is not sui generis to Latin America, nor is its rapid expansion limited to the region; indeed, the transnational flows of ideas the practices is a sine qua non of modern neo-pentecostalism, and part of its dynamism. Unlike earlier missionary movements, however, the energy of Neo-Pentecostalism and prosperity theology in general is multidirectional and polylocal; Latin American practitioners are as likely to be influenced by African or South Korean innovations as they are, themselves, to influence the practices and beliefs of believers in North America or Europe. While the multidirectional currents of Neo-Pentecostal thought are a topic worthy of discussion in their own right, the focus of the article is limited and more narrow, honing in on the expression of a single Neo-Pentecostal doctrine, prosperity theology, within and across the Latin American spiritual landscape. We shall begin our discussion, then, with one of the most vigorous international proponents of prosperity theology, the Brazilian mega-church, the Igreja Universal do Reino de Deus. II. Missionalia 45-3_Niemandt(203–219) 203 www.missionalia.journals.ac.za | http://dx.doi.org/10.7832/45-3-199 The Prosperity Gospel, the decolonisation of Theology, and the abduction of missionary imagination CJP (Nelus) Niemandt1 Abstract This research focussed on one of the most important social movements and contex- tual challenges in the African context – the explosive growth of the ‘prosperity gospel’ in Africa. It investigated this phenomenon from a missiological and African perspec- tive, but in close relation to the discourses on decoloniality and decolonialisation, and asked if the prosperity gospel is a new form of colonialization. The research attended to the historical roots and theology of the prosperity gospel. It identified the core issue as one of contextualisation and investigated the prosperity gospel from a ‘glocal’ perspective. This brought the relationship between the prosperity gospel and globalisation (global) as well as local economic realities into the equation. Conclu- sions were made regarding the complex question whether the prosperity gospel can be regarded as a form of colonialization. The research found that the underlying epistemology is more oriented towards buttressing the worldview of global capital- ism than deconstructing the political, social, and cultural domination established by Europeans and their Euro-North American descendants. It also concluded that the prosperity gospel is a spiritualisation of materiality and celebration of classic symbols of surplus/excess and consumerism. However, when attention was paid to local narratives and theologies, it became apparent that some prosperity churches have a strong focus on local communities and marginalised people and that leaders assisted in liberating empowering of members. -

My theology is shaped by nineteen years as a missionary in Ethiopia. From my understanding of the Bible and from my experience through the years I believe in otherwise inexplicable, miraculous, healing. But, unlike the prosperity theologians I do not believe that our prosperity, whether in respect of health or wealth, relates in any law-related manner to our faithfulness to God. And I am appalled by the cynical manipulation of myriads of Christians by those who promise prosperity in return for faith, and in return, also, for some more-or-less precisely spelled out financial contribution through the post or in the bag. -

The name French 75 comes from people saying the drink packed such a kick that it felt like being shelled with the French 75mm artillery field gun. In French the drink is called the Soixante Quinze. It is featured in the film Casablanca. French 75 2 oz gin 3 oz champagne 3/4 oz lemon juice 3/4 oz simple syrup Long spiral lemon twist Combine gin, lemon juice, and simple syrup in a cocktail shaker with ice. Shake until very cold. Strain into a champagne flute or highball glass. Top with champagne and garnish with lemon twist. French 75 Mocktail 6 oz club soda 2 oz lemon juice 2 oz simple syrup 2 dashes orange bitters Rosemary sprig Long spiral lemon twist Combine club soda, lemon juice, simple syrup, and bitters in a tall glass with ice. Add rosemary sprig. Stir gently just to mix. Add lemon twist. Theology: Prosperity Theology Introduction Prosperity theology, or Prosperity Gospel, is a uniquely American distortion of the Christian Gospel. It has now become widespread beyond the United States, especially through the influence of some Pentecostal and Evangelical churches that take their cues from churches in the United States. It is a belief system that has become well-known through tele-evangelists and megachurch leaders. I would say without hesitation that it is anti-Gospel, and therefore anti-Christ, which sounds like a strong way of putting it, but why not.
