MEDIA INFORMATION NO HAMBURG, NO BEATLES: THE HISTORY OF THE FAB FOUR IN HAMBURG From the evolution of the Hamburg Sound to today’s club scene On 17 August 1960, John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, Stuart Sutcliffe and Pete Best played their first gig at the Indra Club in the legendary St Pauli district of Hamburg. Mark Lewisohn, the acclaimed Beatles author, aptly commented “No Hamburg, no Beatles”. The Beatles, some of whom were still minors in the beginning, spent two years in Hamburg, with only a few breaks in between. Here, they laid the foundations for their global career. Following their debut in 1960, the Beatles played in Hamburg more often than anywhere else in the world – with 300 concerts, five contracts with four different music clubs, and about 1,200 hours spent on Hamburg stages. Are You THE Best or PETE Best? by Mark Matteson Are you old enough to remember the Beatles? John, Paul, George, and Ringo? I do. From the time they took the Big Apple by storm at Shea Stadium in 1964, they soared to the top of the charts and stayed there for the next seven years. They came to Seattle to play in 1966, and my older brother and sister both went to the show. I was only nine, but I wanted to go, too. My mother very wisely said no. I was so disappointed. The Beatles were simply the best. Between 1964 and 1985, they sold almost 75,000,000 records. That is amazing, given the band broke up in 1971. What is even more astonishing is they sold another 57,000,000 records from 1991 to 2008! All told, according to EMI and Guinness World Records, they sold over 1,100,000,000 records, cassettes, CDs, and bootlegs. That’s over a BILLON units. My mother is English. She was born just outside of London in the early 1930s. Her cousin was Cyril Davis. They played together as kids. He went on to become a famous blues harmonica player and bandleader in London. Some say he was the best harmonica player in England at that time in rock and roll history. In the late 1950s, if you got a chance to play with Cyril, it might just launch your career. Eric Clapton sat in with him at age 15. There was also a young, skinny art student named Mick Jagger who sang a few times with Cyril’s band. -

Beatles final paper Zachary Lee Liverpool, late 1950s: A 16 year old schoolboy by the name of John Lennon forms a group of musicians called the Quarrymen (after using the name Blackjacks). After members of the Quarrymen left the band, a friend from John’s school, Stuart Sutcliffe joined the band as its bass player and it was he, in the summer of 1960 that suggested the name “the Beatles” in admiration for Buddy Holly and his band the Crickets. After a successful stint in Hamburg between 1960 and 1962, the Beatles became more and more popular—especially back in Liverpool. From there, the Beatles managed to convince Ed Sullivan to bring them to America where they would go on to becoming arguably the most successful band in the history of music. In terms of their music, the Beatles composed many pieces of music during their time as a band with some being more famous and recognizable (for common music listeners) such as “Hey Jude” and “Yesterday” than others such as “Maxwell’s Silver Hammer” and “The Word”. Their flexibility of song writing and producing is so great that some of their songs stand not just as a carrier of lyrics like most pop songs, but they are also musical compositions able to be played by many different instruments in many different ways. When looking at the Beatles, one could split the Beatles into three “time periods” highlighting the different stages of musical influences and production by the Beatles. The first would be from around 1963 to around 1965 when they released albums such as: Please, Please Me, A Hard Day’s Night and Help!.
