Tan- ner. This resulted in a listing of the species found in the State. Taxonomic keys were made and compiled covering these species. Distributional notes where available were made with the brief des- criptions of the species. The work was based on the material in the entomological col- lection of the Brigham Young University, with additional records obtained from the collection of the Utah State Agricultural College. -

I am thankful to them for being so generous, and completely lacking in resentment at all the things that pull their husband and dad in so many directions. They have both necessarily become adept at melting away anxiety; I will forever be indebted to the hugs of a two-year-old and the kind words of his mom. A study of the feculae of Orthoptera, their specificity, and the role which the insects'mouthparts, ahmen- tary canal, and food-habits play in their formation BY S. K. GANGWERE (Detroit) 1 (Láms. VII-VIII.) Many physiological studies have been carried out on different as- pects of the feculae ("feces") and their formation in Orthoptera (sens. lat.). Among the more important of these researches are ones by Nenjukov and Parfentjev (1929), Nielsen (1943), and Snipes and Tauber (1937), who described for various species the speed of transit of food through the alimentary canal, i. e., rate of formation of feculae; Chauvin (1946), the periodicity of defecation in four species ; Bro-wn (1937) and Chauvin (1941), the biochemistry of feculae ; Brown (1937), their structure ; and numerous authors, the general physiology of di- gestion and excretion in Orthoptera. Surprisirigly, however, purely descriptive studies on feculae have lagged. Frost (1928; 1959) revie- wed insect "scatology", but included scant material relative to Orthop- tera ; Weiss and Boyd (1950) described and figured the feculae of three species of Orthoptera, and Boldyrev (1928) did the same for a species of katydid ; and Day (1950) described, but did not figure, those of a species of cockroach. Nowhere, apparently, is there a study which elucidates the form and specificity, if any, of fecttlae in the major groups of Orthoptera, nor is there one which discusses satisfactorily the factors which influence their formation. 271 Chapter 9 Orthoptera of the Grasslands of British Columbia and the Yukon Territory James Miskelly Research Associate, Royal BC Museum 675 Belleville St., Victoria, B.C., V8W 9W2 Abstract. Of all the habitats available in British Columbia and the Yukon Territory, grasslands support by far the greatest diversity, 87 species, of Orthoptera. Although most of these species have broad distributions in western North America, 23 are not found in other provinces or territories and one is endemic to Yukon. The rarest and most restricted species are those that have their Canadian ranges limited to the arid shrub-steppe in southern British Columbia. Although most Orthoptera in British Columbia and Yukon grasslands are phytophagous, few cause economic damage to cultivated crops. The Orthoptera of British Columbia and Yukon are relatively well studied thanks to the work of a series of researchers over the last century. However, basic inventory and ecological study is needed throughout the region. Since 2005, Orthoptera in British Columbia and Yukon have received renewed attention in fi eld collections and basic research. Résumé. De tous les habitats disponibles en Colombie-Britannique et au Yukon, ceux des prairies présentent de loin la plus grande diversité d’orthoptères, soit 87 espèces. La plupart de ces espèces sont largement répandues dans l’ouest de l’Amérique du Nord, mais 23 d’entre elles sont inconnues dans les autres provinces et territoires, et une est endémique du Yukon. Les espèces les plus rares et les plus restreintes sont celles dont l’aire de répartition canadienne se limite à la steppe arbustive aride du sud de la Colombie-Britannique. -
