Telling Our Story with Finding Dory With the release of the new movie Finding Dory, the pet industry has an opportunity to educate the public on fish keeping, environmental stewardship and the need to protect the aquarium hobby. BY MIKE BOBER Later this month, Finding Dory, a highly anticipated sequel to the movie Finding Nemo, will swim into theaters across the country. While some media have chosen to portray this as a crisis-in-waiting for marine life, the reality is that it is a chance for those of us in the pet industry to engage large numbers of people across multiple generations. It’s up to us to inform them about the many ways the aquatics trade works to protect aquatic life, advance environmental responsibility and partner with hobbyists and newcomers alike to promote responsible fish keeping. Finding Dory follows a sweet and amnesic Paracanthurus hepatus, also known as a palette surgeonfish, royal blue tang or hippo tang, as she seeks to reunite with her family. The concept, colors and characters are sure to be a hit with children of all ages. That’s what has some people worried. In the years since the release of Finding Nemo, there have been several attempts to demonstrate a so-called “Nemo effect” on wild populations of clownfish. Despite the frequency with which it is cited, however, there is no real evidence to support such an effect. While the movie did encourage many families to consider bringing freshwater and marine aquariums into their homes, breeders and sellers of clownfish saw no appreciable rise in demand. -

New Zealand ABSTRACT: Parasitic gnathud isopod larvae on coral reef teleosts and elasmobranchs were quantified at Lizard and Heron Islands (Great Barrier Reef), and Moreton Bay, Australia. The relationship between gnathlid abundance and host size was examined across and within species. Of the 56 species examined. 70 % had gnathiids, with counts ranging from 1 to 200 per fish and the elasmobranchs hav- ing the highest numbers. Pomacentrids rarely had gnathiids. In contrast, most labrids had gnathiids. Gnathiid abundance was positively correlated with host size in the species Chlorurus sordidus, Ctenochaetus stnatus, Hernigyrnnus melapterus, Siganus dollatus, and Thalassorna lunare, but not for Scolopsis b~lineatus.Mean gnathlid abundance per host species also correlated with host size across species, even after controlling for the potential confounding effects of uneven sampling effort and host phylogeny Thus host size explains much of the intraspecific and interspecific variation In gnathiid abundance on fish. Twenty-two reciprocally monophyletic sister- species pairs were identified: 64% were allopatric, and the remainder were sympatric. Age of divergence was similar for allopatric and sympatric species pairs. Sympatric sister pairs displayed greater divergence in morphol- ogy, ecology, and sexually dimorphic colour patterns than did allopatric pairs, suggesting that both genetic drift in allopatric species pairs and ecologically adaptive divergence between members of sympatric pairs have played a role in diversification. Basal species typically have small geographical ranges and are restricted to geographically and ecologically peripheral reef habitats. We found little evidence that a single dominant process has driven diversification, nor did we detect a pattern of discrete, sequential stages of diversification in relation to habitat, ecology, and reproductive biology. The evolution of Chlorurus and Scarus has been complex, involving a number of speciation processes. -

These paradoxes implied that this film portrays that negative characters can be developed into good characters.
