Dear Friends in Christ, Serving as bishop of Buffalo for more than a year now, I have seen firsthand how Christ the King Seminary strengthens our diocese as our local center for faith formation and evangelization. REV. PETER J. DRILLING, TH.D. PRESIDENT-RECTOR / CHRIST THE KING SEMINARY

Each May when the academic term comes to a close it might seem to some that the Seminary takes a break. In fact, the reality is quite different. Formation for Christian ministry continues in the four areas highlighted by Pope John Paul II in 1992: human, spiritual, intellectual, and pastoral. Intellectual formation continues much as it does during the normal academic year. This past summer graduate courses in general church history, sacred scripture, and fundamental moral theology were offered. Students came from the four corners of the Diocese of Buffalo to prepare themselves theologically for ministry. Also offered throughout the summer were dinner lectures. Guests came for dinner at the Seminary and learned about a variety of topics ranging from the Dead Sea Scrolls to outstanding Catholic witnesses in the church of our time, such as Thomas Merton, Oscar Romero, and Dorothy Day. Spiritual formation is also offered during the summer. Last June I was privileged to take part in some aspects of a weekend retreat for young people in their 20s who are going through transition in their lives. For a week in July I conducted a seminar-retreat for priests, deacons and lay people on the central section of St. Mark’s Gospel, the highpoint of which is Jesus’ declaration that he came not to be served, but to serve, and that we disciples of Jesus are called to do the same. Simultaneously with the seminar-retreat, several spiritual directors were leading other retreatants in silent, directed retreats. This summer retreat experience has been happening at Christ the King Seminary for several years. Pastoral formation takes place each year throughout the summer as well, as the Seminary’s Field Education Director, Mrs. Kathleen Castillo, supervises individual students working in various pastoral settings. Likewise, Mrs. Castillo conducted a two-week Central City Live-in Practicum. In other years during the summer a Rural Practicum is offered. Throughout the summer the Formation Directors of our seminarians, Fathers Gregory Faulhaber and Paul Varuvel, travel the roads of Western to monitor the ten-week parish experiences of the seminarians. Here pastoral formation and human formation come together. There is so much involved in formation for Christian ministry in the Roman on the part of seminarians preparing for priesthood, candidates for the permanent diaconate, and women and men who are already or who are preparing to be lay ecclesial ministers. The work goes on year-round. I am gratified by the committed efforts of all the staff of Christ the King Seminary, in every area, who work so hard. There are many challenges of continuing this work of ministry formation in our time and in our place of . I am so grateful to the staff of the Seminary for making every effort to spend wisely and save wherever we can reasonably do so. I am grateful to the Board of Trustees, particularly the Finance Committee, for helping the Seminary move forward responsibly. I am so very grateful to our wonderful donors, some of whom have really stepped up to the plate to support our Seminary. Thank you, thank you all. So many people are ardent supporters of the Seminary in many different ways. I am so grateful. We are so grateful. Please help us get the word out even more widely to the Western New York Catholic community that so much is going on at 711 Knox Road in East Aurora to assure there are skilled and dedicated ministers to serve our Catholic institutions in the name and in the spirit of Christ Jesus our Lord, who came not to be served but to serve.

Christ the King Seminary serves as the faith center in the Diocese of Buffalo, helping to prepare our priests, deacons, and lay women and men to minister in our diocese and also in our ever- changing world. This report highlights the many ways the Seminary helps to strengthen and support our Catholic faith throughout the diocese. At the forefront of preparing seminarians for their modern priestly ministry, the Seminary is also a place of preparation and formation for all who welcome Christ’s call. Deacons. Lay ecclesial ministers. Religious education instructors. Parishioners from every corner of the diocese. Christ the King Seminary unites many in the harmony of our one true faith, guided and illumined by the light of Christ. With God’s grace, we grow stronger as we support one another. Adopt a Seminarian The vocations coordinator program was launched with a rather creative idea meant to raise the visibility of seminarians studying at Christ the King Seminary. The vocations coordinators invited members of their parish to spiritually “adopt” a seminarian, by praying for and encouraging them on their priestly journey. Cards with photos and information on current seminarians were produced with help from the Serra Club of Buffalo, an organization that meets at the Seminary each month with a mission to promote vocations. Funding for the cards came from a grant from the Bishop’s Council of the Laity. Vocations coordinators distributed the cards to parishioners asking them to pray for and encourage the seminarians. Phone numbers and e-mail addresses on the cards enable parishioners to contact the seminarian if they wish. “I saw the program first at St. Padre Pio Parish in Oakfield. They began it on their own and with the help of a great team effort, we were able to adapt the idea for the entire diocese,” said Father Walter J. Szczesny, Vocations Director. “These are the types of innovative ideas we hope the vocations coordinator program will continue to produce in promoting vocations in our diocese.” Meanwhile, initial inquiries from men showing an interest in the priesthood were strong this past year according to the diocesan vocations office.

Peter & Paul Parish for more than 25 years, Deacon Wlos taught social studies in local Catholic high schools for more than 40 years. He notes that he has come full circle with his diaconal ordination at the Seminary, having studied for the priesthood at one time. “I actually entered the Seminary nearly 45 years ago when it was called St. John Vianney, but left to begin my teaching career,” he explained. “I saw teaching in a Catholic school as a continuation of my vocation and now, as a deacon, I can continue that vocation even further in a new way.” Deacon Wlos points out he had the good fortune of learning from Father Charles Amico back when he was studying for the priesthood and again when he began his diaconal training at Christ the King Seminary. He said his seminary education has prepared him well for his role as deacon at the parish and he will utilize the Seminary for parish retreats and other events for parishioners. Men of Service ORDINATIONS INTO THE PERMANENT DIACONATE

Nine area men were ordained permanent deacons in the Diocese of Buffalo in June of this year after completing a training program of human, spiritual, intellectual and pastoral formation at Christ the King Seminary. These nine new members of clergy join more than 120 other deacons serving in the Diocese of Buffalo and go forth from the Seminary well- prepared for the various ministries each will undertake.

Bishop Richard J. Malone presided over the ordinations and later assigned the new deacons to diaconal ministry in the diocese. They include: • Paul L. Christ the King Seminary 2012/2013 Annual Report PAGE 11 “Christ the King Seminary is blessed with a dedicated faculty, some of whom have devoted years and years of their lives to this ministry. At the same time, we need to prepare for a new generation of formators in the several disciplines of intellectual and pastoral and spiritual and human formation. I am impressed with the number of young people who contact me and whom I meet when I visit theological faculties, such as at the Toronto School of Theology and ’s School of Ministry. These men and women are devoting themselves to doctoral work in theology, and would love to teach at the Seminary. At the same time, a Seminary also needs to recruit sufficient priest faculty members. Christ the King Seminary is not running away from this challenge.”

Strengthening Our Parishes PASTORAL MINISTRY AND ADMINISTRATIVE SUPPORT

When he was assigned to his first parish as a newly-ordained priest in Buffalo, Father John Gaglione, current pastor of Christ the King Parish in Snyder, said operating a parish was not as complex as it is today.

“In the 1960s and ’70s, there were still many priests – pursuing that ministry will also need a Master of Arts in at my first assignment at Holy Name in Buffalo we had Pastoral Ministry (MAPM). a pastor and two associates,” he explained. “Contrast “The Seminary has been educating the laity for that with today, when so many priests are retiring and decades so the parish administration training program their replacements are far fewer. Most parishes, like can be implemented right away,” said Dennis Castillo, ours, have just one priest, and in some more rural Academic Dean. “Working with the diocese, we have areas, one priest is responsible for two parishes. The created a course program to address the requirements need for administrative support from deacons and laity of a job description as parish administrator.” is greater than ever.” Father Peter Drilling, President-Rector, noted the new Recognizing this need in the Diocese of Buffalo, course offering is another way the Seminary is here to Bishop Richard Malone has introduced a program to help strengthen parishes and the diocese. “The parish provide training for deacons and lay ecclesial ministers administration training may help keep more parishes on parish administration so that they can better assist open, especially in the rural areas, as an administrator the priest with the multitude of administrative tasks can take on some of the duties to help the pastor,” faced at a parish every day. The training will be offered Father Drilling said. “The pastor can then better focus as a continuing education course at Christ the King on his ministries as an ordained priest.” Seminary and will be a requirement for individuals wishing to work in parish administration. Those A Parish Example.

Renee Villa has been Pastoral Associate at Christ the King Parish in Snyder for nine years. While she has yet to take the new parish administration course, she has earned a Masters of Arts in Pastoral Ministry and is finishing her Master of Divinity at the Seminary. Her administrative skills have come with on-the-job training, but she provides a good model of what the Seminary and diocese hope to achieve with the new parish administrator training. “I don’t know what I would do without Renee,” said Father John Gaglione. “She is highly educated and qualified from her Seminary studies and it is a real advantage that she is a lay person. She relates well with the members of the parish, and in some ways, they may feel more at ease in approaching her.” How a parish operates often goes unnoticed by the congregation. The priest is ultimately responsible for much more beyond the liturgy and worship. Things such as buildings and grounds, purchases, finances, utilities, insurance and a school, in some cases, all must be attended to. Of course, a business manager will likely help in these areas, but there is even more going on behind the scenes. On any given day, Renee is involved in a myriad of tasks from scheduling ushers, lectors and Eucharistic Ministers, to running the RCIA program, to development of faith enrichment programs for the parish. She brings the added advantage of having studied canon law at the Seminary and is able to help parishioners understand issues such as getting married in the church, baptisms or helping a family member convert to Catholicism, for example. Renee pointed to the collaborative model of teaching at the Seminary – involving seminarians, deacons, and laity – as a key to her role as pastoral associate. “Being around the clergy at the Seminary, you not only learn from their coursework, you see their spirituality and are inspired by it,” she said. “It is a privilege to be a part of the parish in this capacity to support Father John. He is the voice of the parish and I can be the eyes and ears as we work together in service to the people of Christ the King.”

It is the mission of Christ the King Seminary to educate sponsored candidates for ordained priesthood and permanent diaconate in the Roman Catholic Church and individuals pursuing either a graduate theological education, a ministerial education program, or a program of continuing education. Christ the King Seminary is fully committed to an integrated and ecumenical model of theological education for men and women eager to experience the wealth of the Roman Catholic Church’s tradition of theological learning, pastoral praxis, and spiritual formation.

Founded in 1857, today Christ the King Seminary is sponsored by the Diocese of Buffalo and served by a faculty of diocesan and religious clergy, women religious and laity. The Seminary is governed by a Board of Trustees, whose chairperson is the Bishop of Buffalo and whose members span a range of persons with expertise in education, business, philanthropy, and church service. It is chartered by the Education Department of the State University of New York, and accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools, and by The Association of Theological Schools in the United States and Canada. The Seminary’s Program of Priestly Formation is governed by ecclesiastical principles and guidelines determined by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops.
