What is STEAM?

STEAM is an acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math.

What are the Summer STEAM Experiences?

The Summer STEAM Experiences are five fantastic opportunities to learn about STEAM in a Fun and Exciting way this Summer!

These experiences are open to students who attend any Western school and are entering 6th and 7th grade in Fall 2014. There are a total of five different experiences to choose from during the weeks of August 11th – 15th and August 18th – 22nd, 2014.

Who Can Attend? How much does an Experience Cost?

Experiences are open to any student attending a Western The registration fee for each Experience is $25.00. The fee New York area school who is entering 6th or 7th grade in guarantees a spot for your child in a ONE Week Experience the Fall of 2014. and includes snacks, field trip costs and an experience souvenir. Who will be facilitating the Experiences? Do I Need to Bring a Lunch? All experiences will be facilitated by teachers from the BISSNET Schools that include: Bishop Timon-St. Jude Yes. We will provide coolers to keep your lunch cold, but High School, Buffalo Academy of the Sacred Heart, will not be providing meals. Brown Bagged lunches are , , Cardinal O'Hara suggested. High School, Immaculata Academy, Mount Mercy Academy, Mount St. Mary Academy, , Where do the Experiences take place? Niagara Catholic Junior-Senior High School, , Park School, St. Francis High School, St. Joseph's Each experience departs from a different BISSNET Collegiate Institute, St. Mary's High School and The Gow school. STEAM Experiences

Our Buffalo Home - How Do You Treat It? August 11th- 15th and August 18th- 22nd from 8:30AM - 4:30PM Experience Departs from: Canisius High School (1180 Delaware Ave, Buffalo, NY 14209)

The "Our Buffalo Home - How Do You Treat it?" Experience will set participants on a path of discovery that will unlock the secrets of how STEAM is connected to our city. Participants will travel to various locations including: The Darwin Martin House, Reinstein Woods, The Wind Turbines, The Tifft Nature Preserve and the Buffalo Science Museum! The week will end with a cool project on an iPad that will piece together all of the great experiences from the week.

STEAMing Potatoes - Ipsum August 11th- 15th from 8:30AM - 4:30PM Experience Departs from: Bishop Timon- St. Jude High School (601 McKinley Pkwy, Buffalo, NY 14220) and Buffalo Seminary (205 Bidwell Pkwy, Buffalo, NY 14222)

So what exactly are STEAMing Potatoes? They are potatoes that have been splattered all over the place after being launched 75 yards or more using skills learned in STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math). This experience will give participants the opportunity to team up with others to design and create a one of a kind potato launcher. This unique launcher will then be put to the test and compete against other teams and their launchers to discover who will be crowned the Masters of the Flying Spud!

Are YOU Healthy? August 11th- 15th from 8:30AM - 4:30PM Experience Departs from: St. Joseph's Collegiate Institute (845 Kenmore Ave Buffalo, New York 14223)

So how healthy do you REALLY think you are?

In this STEAM Experience you will discover the answer!

Participants will learn about the different body systems and how those systems work together to help your body - stay healthy. Each participant will be given an iPad at the beginning of the camp, which will be used to document and enhance the activities they will participate in. Activities will include Iron Chef: Buffalo, Virtual dissections, Calorimetry and Nutrition, Ropes Courses, and a trip to the Buffalo Museum of Science.

Robots - Will They Take Over? August 18th- 22nd from 8:30AM - 4:30PM Experience Departs from: Nardin Academy (135 Cleveland Ave, Buffalo, NY 14222)

The "Robots- Will They Take Over?" Experience will strive to open your child's eyes to the world of robots. The experience will give participants the opportunity to work in teams to design and create their own robot, which will lead to a competition at the end of the week. In addition, participants will learn about video creation as they document the process of creating their robot from start to finish. Guest speakers and field trips will add to the excitement as your child explores robotics and STEAM!
