Dear Friends in Christ,

Strengthening faith, enhancing lives. This, the theme for the 2009-2010 Stewardship Report for The Foundation of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Buffalo, brings to mind the Gospel of Matthew.

In Matthew 22: 34-40, we learn about the Pharisees who challenged Jesus with the question, “Master, which is the greatest commandment of the law?” Jesus replied, “You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the greatest and the first commandment. The second resembles it: You must love your neighbor as yourself.”

We strengthen our faith when we show our love for God through support of His Church and its mission. We enhance lives when we show our love for our neighbor through support of Catholic Charities and other human service organizations in our diocese. What an incredible blessing to have the Foundation to help guide the resources of the people of our diocese to that end. From new and creative ways of educating and enriching faith, to growing pastoral ministries, to meeting needs through charitable service, the stories you will read in this stewardship report demonstrate how the Foundation supports our Diocesan faith community in so many ways, touching so many people.

As the Foundation’s mission grows and its roots deepen, so too does my debt of gratitude to our donors and volunteers, our Foundation trustees and staff. I thank you all and pray that God may continue to work through you for His glory and the welfare of our fellow men and women.

Sincerely in Christ,

Most Rev. Edward U. Kmiec Bishop of Buffalo Chairman, Board of Trustees

Millennial Milestones project Strengthens Faith for Young Adults

year in review – mission successes Leveraging Our Strengths

The Foundation serves the Diocese of Buffalo by raising funds, managing assets and making grants to meet the needs of educational, pastoral and human service ministries in the diocese. This past year the Foundation granted over $1.2 million to various diocesan organizations and ministries. Following are The Office of Lifelong Faith Formation joined with the just a few examples from Department of Youth and Young Adult Ministry in the 2009/10 to show how we Diocese of Buffalo to develop the Millennial Milestones work with the people of the Project, an initiative offering training and resources to diocese to strengthen faith help parishes strengthen young adult ministry. and enhance lives. The project proposal identified several major milestones in the faith lives of young adults in their 20s to late 30s (the “millennial generation”). From the time immediately following their confirmation through their college years to marriage and the baptism of their own children, these milestones represent opportunities to re-engage this age group in their faith communities. The project goal was to help parishes identify creative ways to do that.

The Foundation Board of Trustees recognized the project as an opportunity to leverage the strengths of two diocesan departments in order to increase parish capacity to reach out to young adults as their faith formation needs evolve. The Foundation provided a grant to fund the Millennial Milestones Conference held at Christ the King Seminary in January, 2010 to kick off the project.

The web team at St. Andrew Parish used the project funding to update their web site, allowing them to better communicate with this important age group in their community.

“The Foundation grant helped us develop the conference and ultimately the structure for how the Millennial Milestones Project would assist our parishes,” said Mary Beth Coates, Director of the Office of Lifelong Faith Formation. “The project is not a one-time event, but rather a process to help young adults strengthen their connections across parish life and help the parish develop future leadership among its laity.”

“The conference was an inspiring start to this innovative, long-term project and the parishes responded with great enthusiasm,” added Kathy Goller, Director of Youth & Young Adult Ministry. “Some groups are interested in creating ministry outreach to newly married couples to help them as they begin life as a couple. Other parishes have ideas for helping young families with the experience of infant baptism.” STEWARDSHIP REPoRT 09 /10 page 5

Church Musicians’ Guild of Buffalo Strengthing faith through Music

The Church Musicians’ Guild of Buffalo was founded 60 years ago in the diocese to support parish organists and musicians with continuing education in liturgical music preparation and presentation. A chapter of the National Association of Pastoral Musicians, the Guild has more than 120 local members who attend various classes and retreats and provide fellowship and support for one another as liturgical musicians.

“Liturgical music draws us into a deeper faith and enhances the celebration of the Eucharist,” explained Edward Witul, president of the Church Musicians’ Guild. “The Guild helps to ensure that the musicians who serve our parishes are both intellectually and musically prepared to draw upon our rich Christian traditions, while meeting current and future needs of the Church.”

a grant from the foundation assisted the Church Musicians’ guild in presenting their annual symposium, held in October this year at Christ the King Seminary. Over 250 people attended the Guild’s “Worship Ways Conference” which featured well-known, national liturgical music composers Rev. Jan Michael Joncas, Marty Haugen and Tony Alonso. The three-day liturgical music conference explored where the church has been, where it is now, and where it is going, addressing the challenges of the new liturgical translations being implemented soon.

“I believe the primary purpose of a parish is worship and the liturgical experience including the music should be the best that it can be,” concluded Ed Witul, who also serves as choir director and organist at Our Lady of Czestochowa in Buffalo. “The Guild is an important resource in our diocese and helps our church musicians to offer their best for the benefit of the parishes.”

Sister Ellen notes that the school holds informational sessions on CTAP for parents so that they know about the program and how it can help. Many parents have difficulty asking for assistance, but as Sister explains to them, “You can never be too proud when it comes to helping your children.”

The school draws students from numerous Catholic parishes in the South Buffalo/Lackawanna area including Holy Family, St. Ambrose, St. Anthony, Our Mother of Good Counsel, St. Bonaventure and others. At the same time, the school serves a diverse mix of students from various ethnic and religious backgrounds whose families seek the academics and discipline of Catholic schools.

While CTAP certainly helps in strengthening faith for families, Sister Ellen said the very fact that the children can attend a Catholic school helps in enhancing their lives. “Many of our The Catholic Elementary School Tuition Assistance Program families are poor, with examples that include grandparents (CTAP) provides needs-based tuition assistance for Catholic who are raising their grandchildren and want them to learn and non-Catholic students registered at any Catholic Catholic values,” she concluded. “We help these families in Elementary school within the Diocese of Buffalo. any way we can, not only in educating the children, but in improving their quality of life.”

For many in the Diocese of Buffalo, the strengthening of faith begins during their years in Catholic schools. On January 28, 2010, the annual Making a Difference Dinner – A Celebration of Catholic Schools marked its tenth year with a theme of “A Decade of Support. A Decade of Impact.” More than 1,000 supporters of Catholic education came together at the Adams Mark Hotel in downtown Buffalo and over 160 sponsors provided financial backing for the dinner’s mission.

What is the impact of such great support? The 2010 dinner raised more than $300,000 to fund needs-based tuition assistance grants for 411 Catholic elementary school students in the 2010/2011 school year. The dinner is organized each year by the Foundation of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Buffalo. Funds raised go to support tuition assistance programming, helping families in the Diocese of Buffalo who might otherwise not be able to afford the quality of education our schools provide.

John and Betsy Sullivan served as the 2010 chair couple and they pointed to a very active and involved committee as the main reason the dinner was such a success. Betsy said she and John love what the Catholic schools provide for their children and co-chairing the dinner was both an honor and a way of giving back to Catholic education.

“We can speak from experience that Catholic education provides a loving environment 2009 | 2010 g R a n T D ISTRIBUTIOn S for the children and fosters the same moral values that we share in our family,” she explained. “The Making a Difference Dinner is an extraordinary event that demonstrates the strong belief we have in the importance of Catholic education in our diocese.” $920,447.00 Catholic Education $215,720.00 Catholic Organizational The 2010 dinner honored Ann Swan, Msgr. The pelican was believed to wound itself in order to feed its young with its own blood in times of distress. Thus the bird became a symbol of generosity and parental devotion.
