GHOGREY, SCIENCE COLLEGE, DHULE-424005, (MAHARASHTRA) INDIA. dapatil_10aug@ yahoo.com ABSTRACT: Extensive and intensive botanization was carried out during the last two decades in the erstwhile Dhule district (presently Dhule and Nandurbar districts) of the state of Maharashtra. Pawara, Bhil. Kokani, Mavachi, etc. are the main tribe especially in hilly tract of Satpura mountain and extended offshoots of Western Ghats in these districts. The forests and forests products, besides the traditional cultivated crops are the main sources of their sustenance. The present study attempts at highlighting plant species utilized by them for medicine, food, dyes, gums, tannins, oils, fodder, fuel, timber, thatching huts and hedges, agricultural and household implements, etc. It appeared worth suggesting that these districts are quite rich in raw materials from viewpoint of cottage industries for upliftment of these people. KEY WORD: Upliftment, Vegetable resources, Dhule-Nandurbar districts. INTRODUCTION: Dhule and Nandurbar districts are situated at the north-western border of Maharashtra state. They stretch between 73°47′ and 75°11′ east longitudes and between 20°38′ and 23°3′ north latitudes. The forests area is about 4732.199 sq.km. According to 1991 census, the population of these districts is 2535715. Out of 1523 villages, 871 villages are inhabited by tribals such as Pawara, Bhil, Kokani, Mavachi, etc. Nearly the area is 41% tribal. -

Apart from these, ArcGIS maps were also made in some fungal species. Sri Arvind Parihar, Bot. Asst. accessioned and incorporated 12 specimens, which include two type materials - Craterellus albostrigosus C.K. Pradeep & K.B. Vrinda CAL1624 (Holotype) and Craterellus inusitatus C.K. Pradeep & K.B. Vrinda CAL1625 (Holotype). Dr. Monalisa Dey, Scientist 'B' acted as a panel member in the selection committee for selection of candidates for the Green Skill Development Programme, Advanced course (Parataxonomist) held on 02.11.2017 at Central National Herbarium, BSI, Howrah. Public service rendered Dr. A.B.D. Selvam, Scientist 'D' pharmacognostically studied and authenticated three vegetable crude drug samples as detailed below, which were received from M/s Emami Ltd. MULTIPURPOSE TREE SPECIES FOR SNZALL-FARM USE of an itional workshop ovember 2-5, 1987 aya, Thailand. The Winrock International Institute for Agricultural Development is a private, nonprofit U.S. organization working in agricultural development around the world. It was established in 1985 through the merging of the Agricultural Development Council (A/D/C), the International Agricultural Development Service (IADS), and the Winrock International Livestock Research and Training Center. Winrock International's mission is to help increase the agricultural productivity, improve the nutrition, and advance the well-being of men, women, and children throughout the world. Its main areas of emphasis are human resources, renewable resources, food policy, animal agriculture and farming systems, and agricultural research and extension. Winrock International's headquarters are located in Morrilton, Arkansas, with regional offices in Arlington, Virginia and Bangkok, Thailand. Winrock International co-sponsored this workshop under the Forestry/Fuelwood Research and Development (F/FRED) Project, for which it serves as prime contractor. Funded by the U.S. Agency for International Development, F/FRED is designed to help scientists address the needs of small-scale farmers in the developing world for fuelwood and other tree products. It provides a network through which scientists exchange research plans, methods, and results. Research and development activities center on the production and use of multipurpose trees that meet the several household needs of small farmers. The International Development Research Centre (IDRC) is a public corporation created by the Parliament of Canada in 1970 to support research designed to adapt science and technology to the needs of developing countries. -

Ancient Indian knowledge on medicinal plants was wide and comprehensive. Vedic literature stands to the proof of their vast knowledge on herbal medicines. Al- though the ancient systems of herbal medicine was prevalent throughout the country, it suffered a severe set back with the introduction of Allopathy. But currentty there is a reawakening which has resulted in a more scientific appro- ach to the Vedic days store of knowledge of medicinal plants. A good number of medicinal plants are found mentioned in the ancient classical Ayurvedic texts 'Charaka Samhita'. 'Susruta Samhita' and 'Astanga Hrdaya Samhita'. But many of them still remain to be properly identified. During the process of urbanization the contact with plants in their natural habitat was lost, creating confusion in the correct identity of many plants. The indiscriminate use of Sanskrit names and synonyms in later publications which are not given in the ancient treatises, added to this problem. Moreover many irregularities have crept in, in the identity ofraw material due to wrong interpretations of the Sanskrit names of medicinal plants. -

Piliostigma malabaricum (Roxb.) Benth. Fabaceae - Caesalpinioideae LOCAL NAMES English (mountain ebony,Malabar orchid); Filipino (alibangbang); Thai (sieo som,salaeng phan,chongkho); Vietnamese (tai voi,m[os]ng b[of]) BOTANIC DESCRIPTION Piliostigma malabaricum is an evergreen or nearly evergreen tree 4-17 m tall with a short often gnarled bole. Trunk diameter is usually up to 50 cm, bark surface is rather fissured and peels off in long strips, yellowish-brown and chequered. Leaves alternate, simple, 3.5-12 cm x 5-16 cm, ovate to rotund, bi-fid up to one fourth of their length with a broad sinus and broadly rounded lobes glabrous and green above, hairy and dull glaucous below. Stipules linear, caducous. Flowers in compound densely-flowered, racemes, clavate in bud, 2-5 cm, pedicels long 1 -2 cm, Calyx regularly 5-fid to near its base, 15-18 mm long densely short-hairy. Petals 1 -2 cm, oblong-obovate corrugate, dorsally pubescent and pale yellow-white. Male flowers with 10 stamens, female flowers with 10 minute staminodes, ovary superior, densely hairy on free stalk and with a peltate stigma. Fruit a brown indehiscent pod, 17-35 cm x 2-2.5 cm; borne on a long stalk, linear in shape (but often curved or beaked), with a veined and rather thick pericarp. Seeds 10-30, embedded in pulp. The generic epithet Piliostigma, means cap-like stigma. The specific epithet malabaricum refers to a locality in India. BIOLOGY The Malabar orchid is dioecious. In Philippines flowers have been observed during the months of October-November in the region and July- October, in Java flowering is between March and April and fruiting in July- October. -

How to use this guide This field guide is to be used to locate and/or identify unique plant germplasm accessions within the diverse germplasm collections on the USDA-ARS Tropical Agriculture Research Station grounds. It can be used in several ways, but the following steps provide a general guide. 1. Identify plant by common name and/or by scientific name (binomial) in the guide’s index. 2. Find scientific name of plant in specified table. 3. Identify TARS number and Location quadrant from table. 4. Find corresponding field plot and identify accession location based onTARS number and map quadrant. Acknowledgements: This field guide is the compilation of work performed by many important contributors over the years. Contributors include volunteers and students as well as technical and scientific staff that have worked on the plant germplasm collection on the grounds of the USDA-ARS Tropical Agriculture Research Station since its inception in 1902. We recognize the recent efforts in improving the field guide and diverse germplasm collections by Jose ‘Cheo’ Can- cel, Luis De La Cruz, Alcides Morales, Miguel Roman and Pedro Torres.
