Addition to Summer Letter
May 2020 Dear Student, You are enrolled in Advanced Placement English Literature and Composition for the coming school year. Bowling Green High School has offered this course since 1983. I thought that I would tell you a little bit about the course and what will be expected of you. Please share this letter with your parents or guardians. A.P. Literature and Composition is a year-long class that is taught on a college freshman level. This means that we will read college level texts—often from college anthologies—and we will deal with other materials generally taught in college. You should be advised that some of these texts are sophisticated and contain mature themes and/or advanced levels of difficulty. In this class we will concentrate on refining reading, writing, and critical analysis skills, as well as personal reactions to literature. A.P. Literature is not a survey course or a history of literature course so instead of studying English and world literature chronologically, we will be studying a mix of classic and contemporary pieces of fiction from all eras and from diverse cultures. This gives us an opportunity to develop more than a superficial understanding of literary works and their ideas. Writing is at the heart of this A.P. course, so you will write often in journals, in both personal and researched essays, and in creative responses. You will need to revise your writing. I have found that even good students—like you—need to refine, mature, and improve their writing skills. You will have to work diligently at revising major essays. -

Nelson Algren: An American Outsider Bettina Drew VER THE MANY YEARS IHAVE SPENT WRITING AND THINKING ABOUT Nelson Algren, I have always found, in addition to his poetic lyri- clsm, a density and darkness and preoccupation with philosoph- .nl issues that seem fundamentally European rather than Amer- ican. In many ways, Norman Mailer was right when he called Algren "the grand odd-ball of American Ietters."' There is some- thing accurate in the description, however pejorative its intent or meaning at first glance, for Algren held consistently and without doubt to an artistic vision that, above and beyond its naturalism, was at odds with the mainstream of American literature. And cul- ural reasons led to the lukewarm American reception of his work ill the past several decades. As James R. Giles notes in his book Confronting the Horror: The Novels of Nelson Algren, a school of critical thought citing Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry David Thoreau, Mark Twain, and Walt Whitman argues that nineteenth-century American liter- ature was dominated by an innocence and an intense faith in in- dividual freedom and human potential. But nineteenth-century American literature was also dominated by an intense focus on the American experience as unique in the world, a legacy, perhaps, of --. the American Revolution against monarchy in favor of democ- racy. Slave narratives, Harriet Beecher Stowe's Uncle Tom's Cabin (1852),narratives of westward discovery such as Twain's Roughing It (1872), the wilderness tales of James Fenimore Cooper, and Thoreau's stay on Walden Pond were stories that could have taken place only in America-an essentially rural and industrially unde- veloped America. -

names, Vol. 58 No. 3, September, 2010, 139–49 Names in Marilynne Robinson’s Gilead and Home Susan Petit Emeritus, College of San Mateo, California, USA The titles of Marilynne Robinson’s complementary novels Gilead (2004) and Home (2008) and the names of their characters are rich in allusions, many of them to the Bible and American history, making this tale of two Iowa families in 1956 into an exploration of American religion with particular reference to Christianity and civil rights. The books’ titles suggest healing and comfort but also loss and defeat. Who does the naming, what the name is, and how the person who is named accepts or rejects the name reveal the sometimes difficult relationships among these characters. The names also reinforce the books’ endorsement of a humanistic Christianity and a recommitment to racial equality. keywords Bible, American history, slavery, civil rights, American literature Names are an important source of meaning in Marilynne Robinson’s prize-winning novels Gilead (2004) and Home (2008),1 which concern the lives of two families in the fictional town of Gilead, Iowa,2 in the summer of 1956. Gilead is narrated by the Reverend John Ames, at least the third Congregationalist minister of that name in his family, in the form of a letter he hopes his small son will read after he grows up, while in Home events are recounted in free indirect discourse through the eyes of Glory Boughton, the youngest child of Ames’ lifelong friend, Robert Boughton, a retired Presbyterian minister. Both Ames, who turns seventy-seven3 that summer (2004: 233), and Glory, who is thirty-eight, also reflect on the past and its influence on the present. -

Even though it has been severely attacked by some people for its nasty language, lesbian relationship and domestic violence, The Color Purple is still hailed as a classic book in exploring the pathos of black women in social context. The strength of the book mainly derives from the regeneration of the multitude of characters with the protagonist Celie in the forefront. Facing the overwhelmingly powerful patriarchal culture, Celie unresistingly places herself under the domination and authority of men, as revealed in her way of naming men, her fear of men and of God. While later through the wholesome influence of Sofia and mothering nurturing of Shug, Celie’s sense of ego is gradually awakened. She finally enters the world of creation. In return, the arrogant Shug and Amazon-like Sofia become more compassionate and gentle. While the black women enjoy their close bond and dearly selfhood, the black men as exemplified by Mr. ____and Harpo also go through the process of reexamination of their existence. They no longer view women as objects; instead they begin to acknowledge their equal status as human beings. So at the end of the book, both black men and women discover in themselves the ability to love and to be loved and learn to embrace the selfhood, sisterhood and brotherhood. -

Pynchon in Popular Magazines JOHN K. YOUNG Any devoted Pynchon reader knows that "The Secret Integration" originally appeared in The Saturday Evening Post and that portions of The Crying of Lot 49 were first serialized in Esquire and Cavalier. But few readers stop to ask what it meant for Pynchon, already a reclusive figure, to publish in these popular magazines during the mid-1960s, or how we might understand these texts today after taking into account their original sites of publica- tion. "The Secret Integration" in the Post or the excerpt of Lot 49 in Esquire produce different meanings in these different contexts, meanings that disappear when reading the later versions alone. In this essay I argue that only by studying these stories within their full textual history can we understand Pynchon's place within popular media and his responses to the consumer culture through which he developed his initial authorial image. -

Malgré son talent d’écrivain, il reste avant tout célèbre pour sa relation amoureuse avec Simone de Beauvoir. À la suite de la publication de Lettres à Nelson Algren, il y a quatre ans, la BBC, les télévisions américaine et française ont diffusé plusieurs émissions, consacrées à cette relation, qui a profondément marqué les œuvres respectives des deux auteurs. Literary Chicago, a Topic That Should Be of Interest to Many of the 20,000 Librarians Who Will Be Here Next Month to Attend ALA’S Annual Conference
time—one’s rummaging options are limited. (Yes, I know, you can google anything, but too often my googling leaves me with only half a fact when I need the thing entire.) So, Joyce, I’m sorry, but quizzes are too demanding for a weary editor like me to produce with anything like the frequency you crave. Still, you did write that introduction, and a favor deserves acknowledgment. o here, at long last, is a quiz—not just any quiz but one that Scelebrates literary Chicago, a topic that should be of interest to many of the 20,000 librarians who will be here next month to attend ALA’s Annual Conference. Chicagoans, of course, enjoy a long and illustrious literary tradition, one that reaches from Theodore Dreiser and Frank Norris through Richard Wright and Ernest Hemingway and on to Saul Bellow and Nelson Algren and on still further to Sandra Cisneros, Sara Paretsky, and many, many others. It’s hardly a challenge to match these authors with their titles set in Chicago, but it may prove just a bit harder to combine those pairings with a neighborhood, a landmark, or an event in Chicago history that plays a significant role in each book. Along with the literary lights above, we’ve included works set in the Chicago area by writers not usually associated with our Literary Chicago city and its suburbs (Philip Roth and Somerset Maugham), books by Booklist staffers (Ilene Cooper and Keir Graff), and a oyce Saricks, who was kind enough to write the introduction to real curiosity: a novel whose setting is ALA’s publishing depart- ALA Editions’ recently released compilation of my Back Page ment. -
