ANNUAL REPORT 2016 – 2017 LETTER FROM THE HEADMASTER THOMAS J. DOHERTY III It is amazing how history repeats itself. Eighty-five years ago the Xaverian Brothers were called upon to open a school just for boys. At that time, Girls Catholic was thriving, but young men from Immaculate Conception Parish in Malden had nowhere to go. Today, Malden Catholic is thriving, and over and over again, parents and alumni have asked us when are we going to “do something for girls.” The genesis for Boys Catholic then is the same as the genesis for Malden Catholic School for Girls now: the need for single-gender Catholic education in the Malden area. Fifty years ago, a massive construction project was underway, right here on Crystal Street. At that time a new building was being created to move our school from its home on Highland Avenue across town. The new home of Malden Catholic has served students well for the past five decades. Recent improvements, thanks to the Essential Campaign, allow us to continue to deliver the best academic experience to today’s young men. Now, another construction project takes place here as we prepare to welcome the inaugural ninth grade class of Malden Catholic School for Girls. It really is amazing how history repeats itself. This is a busy year for us. Launching a new school takes much work from many people. We had the chance to take the easy route. We could have created a co-ed school. This would have been easy, but it would not be the Malden Catholic way. Our motto is Plus Ultra, so we have chosen to take on the even greater challenge of having two schools. The School for Girls will provide young women with the advantage of a Malden Catholic education and the School for Boys will continue on without disruption educating young men in an all-boys environment. We believe that through our work we will not only stay true to our Mission of single-gender education, but will provide the best student experience to both boys and girls. I am grateful for the outpouring of support as we approach this next chapter in the rich history of Malden Catholic. I am grateful to the generosity of our alumni, parents, and friends. For the second year in a row, the Fund for Malden Catholic hit a record high. It is because of your support that Malden Catholic has been able to develop boys into men for the past eighty-five years. I look forward to carrying on the mission of Girls Catholic. We stand ready to answer the call and prepare young women to be leaders of tomorrow. I ask for your continued prayers for both our schools as we once again open a new school on Crystal Street. Warm regards, Thomas J. Doherty III Headmaster LETTER FROM THE CHAIRMAN JIM DONOVAN HON’11 Dear Friends of Malden Catholic, Successfully delivering eighty-five years of superior Catholic secondary education in an ever- changing urban environment is an enviable accomplishment. Today, Malden Catholic not only survives but thrives, because our loyal supporters believe in their hearts that the mission first envisioned by Brother Gilbert and his fellow Xaverian Brothers in 1932 is far too precious to abandon. We have come so far as a school community since our humble beginnings on Highland Avenue. I am proud that my father was a member of the class of 1937, and I know he would be proud to see that the flame of the Xaverian charism still burns brightly at MC today, fueled by the success of the Essential Malden Catholic Campaign. I am happy to report that the Campaign far exceeded its initial $15 million goal, and has helped to inspire over $25 million in giving over the past five years. There are very few similarly-positioned schools that could achieve this level of giving in such a short amount of time. I am grateful to all who participated in the Essential Campaign: students, families, alumni, alumnae of Girls Catholic, faculty, staff, foundations, and friends of Malden Catholic. Essential Campaign funds have already been deployed to re-energize our fifty-year-old facility on Crystal Street with a cutting-edge science wing, a new Learning Commons, and significant expansion of our athletic facilities. Your financial support has also made it possible to ensure that our gifted faculty are now being competitively compensated for their commitment to MC’s Mission. The momentum generated by the Campaign cannot be sustained, however, without a commitment to substantially grow our Annual Fund. It may surprise you to know that our current tuition is $16,100, making the dream of a Malden Catholic education initially unreachable for many families. To make this dream a reality, over half of our student body depends on financial assistance, the principal source of which is the Fund for Malden Catholic. As Theodore James Ryken once encouraged his fellow Xaverian Brothers to “give the gift they received as gift to a world in need,” so I ask you: please help us give the gift of a Malden Catholic education to deserving Lancers through your participation in the Fund for Malden Catholic. In my last letter, I invited you to think about the enduring legacy you will leave for the students of Malden Catholic. Returning to this theme, I am happy to report that a number of benefactors have included Malden Catholic in their estate plans this year in honor of a faculty member or Xaverian Brother who had a strong formative impact on them at Malden Catholic. Your estate gift made through the Ryken Planned Giving Society can make a dramatic difference in the lives of thousands of future MC students. Please join me in making that difference! I close on a note of great excitement as we prepare to launch the codivisional chapter of our mission here on Crystal Street. By February, we will have in place a brand-new wing for educating girls. I have the utmost confidence that the School for Girls will flourish, guided by Tom Doherty’s vision and Lisa Cenca’s leadership and enthusiasm. We are on the front lines of something new here at Malden Catholic, and it is our job to go boldly, as Lancers always do. Thank you for supporting this exciting phase of our journey. Sincerely, Jim Donovan Hon’11 1 82ND ANNUAL COMMENCEMENT THE CLASS OF 2017 Malden Catholic celebrated its 82nd Commencement Exercises on Saturday, May 20th, 2017 in the Doherty Gymnasium at Malden Catholic.
