Morphological and Ecological Evolution in Old and New World Flycatchers (215pp.) Director of Dissertation: Donald B. Miles In both the Old and New Worlds, independent clades of sit-and-wait insectivorous birds have evolved. These independent radiations provide an excellent opportunity to test for convergent relationships between morphology and ecology at different ecological and phylogenetic levels. First, I test whether there is a significant adaptive relationship between ecology and morphology in North American and Southern African flycatcher communities. Second, using morphological traits and observations on foraging behavior, I test whether ecomorphological relationships are dependent upon locality. Third, using multivariate discrimination and cluster analysis on a morphological data set of five flycatcher clades, I address whether there is broad scale ecomorphological convergence among flycatcher clades and if morphology predicts a course measure of habitat preference. Finally, I test whether there is a common morphological axis of diversification and whether relative age of origin corresponds to the morphological variation exhibited by elaenia and tody-tyrant lineages. -

The object of this review is to relate nest-buildingbehavior to the origin and early evolution of passerinebirds (Order Passeriformes).I present evidence for the hypoth- esis that the combinationof small body size and the ability to place a constructednest where the bird chooses,helped make possiblea vast amountof adaptiveradiation. A great diversity of potential habitats especially accessibleto small birds was created in the late Tertiary by global climatic changes and by the continuing great evolutionary expansion of flowering plants and insects.Cavity or hole nests(in ground or tree), open-cupnests (outside of holes), and domed nests (with a constructedroof) were all present very early in evolution of the Passeriformes,as indicated by the presenceof all three of these basic nest types among the most primitive families of living passerinebirds. Secondary specializationsof these basic nest types are illustratedin the largest and most successfulfamilies of suboscinebirds. Nest site and nest form and structureoften help characterizethe genus, as is exemplified in the suboscinesby the ovenbirds(Furnariidae), a large family that builds among the most diverse nests of any family of birds. The domed nest is much more common among passerinesthan in non-passerines,and it is especially frequent among the very smallestpasserine birds the world over. -

Comité Argentino de Registros Ornitológicos PROPUESTA CARO 06 – Quitar Serpophaga munda de la lista de aves argentinas Jorge La Grotteria - 24/05/2021 ANTECEDENTES Forma muy debatida por la ciencia. Berlepsch (1893) describió a S. munda separándola de S. subcristata. Zimmer (1955) analiza ambas formas y considera que S. munda corresponde a un hábitat xerófilo- montañoso, y S. subcristata a las llanuras húmedas. Sostiene que la coloración dorsal y ventral no es concluyente. Bó (1969) llega a un resultado similar al de Zimmer (1955) pero encuentra que en determinada zona se encuentran ambas formas en simpatría, quedando la duda de si se quiebra el aislamiento genético e hibridizan. Short (1975) considera a S. munda como una subespecie o morfo de S. subcristata. Straneck (1993) unifica a S. subcristata con S. munda por tener iguales repertorios acústicos corroborando lo mencionado por Zimmer (1955), Short (1975) y Bó (1969). Smith (1971) realizó anteriormente análisis acústicos de ambas formas y apoyó el punto de vista de munda como especie válida por diferir en coloración y algunas vocalizaciones de S. subcristata, a lo que Straneck (1993) refuta que las diferencias vocales reportadas por Smith (1971) son mínimas y atribuibles a diferencias individuales o regionales, a lo que agrega que Smith no contó con el material comparativo suficiente. Herzog (2001) señala que Straneck (1993) posee severos defectos en la metodología y comenta que al re-examinar toda la información con un criterio conservador obtiene resultados opuestos, señalando que S. subcristata y S. munda son especies válidas. Mazar Barnett y Pearman (2001) siguen a Straneck (1993) basándose en las idénticas vocalizaciones e intergradación en la zona de contacto. -

An Avifaunal Inventory of Parque Nacional Teniente Agripino Enciso, Departamento Boquerón, Northern Paraguay
[FAUNA Paraguay Technical Publication Number 4] September 2006 AN AVIFAUNAL INVENTORY OF PARQUE NACIONAL TENIENTE AGRIPINO ENCISO, DEPARTAMENTO BOQUERÓN, NORTHERN PARAGUAY Paul Smith, Adam Betuel, Hemme Batjes, Silvia Centrón and Hugo del Castillo INTRODUCTION Parque Nacional Teniente Agripino Enciso (hereafter referred to as Enciso) is one of a collection of six reserves that make up the Reserva de la Biosfera del Chaco in extreme northern Paraguay. It was established in the 1990s with the aim to conserve sites of historical interest from the Chaco War and a population of the threatened Chaco Peccary or Tagua Catagonus wagneri a species known only from fossil remains that was first seen alive in 1976. Located at approximately km700 on the Ruta Trans-Chaco it is arguably the most accessible of the Chaco Biosphere Reserves. The habitat here consists mainly of dense, thorny Chaco forest with a low canopy and open undergrowth. In winter (June to September approximately) it is extremely dry, with considerable flooding taking place during the spring and early summer (September to December approximately) - a result of standing water from heavy seasonal rains (Mario Torales pers. comm.). AIMS Despite excellent visitor facilities, Enciso is one of the most isolated and least visited of Paraguay´s national parks. We aimed to perform an avifaunal inventory of the park which, in addition to records already in the Guyra Paraguay database, would help to produce a complete species list for the site. In the process a bilingual field guide (English/Spanish) to the birds of the park would be produced, to stimulate interest in birds and conservation amongst visitors, and highlight the uniqueness of this fascinating location. -

Resumen. – Avifauna chaqueña del norte de Paraguay. – Inventarios llevaros a acabo en cinco sitios en el chaco del norte de Paraguay indicaron la presencia de 233 especies de aves, incluyendo a Mosqueta Boreal (Empidonax alnorum), la cual se registra por primera vez en el país. Se documentaron por primera vez tres especies por medio de especimenes [Chiripepé de Cabeza Gris (yrrhura molinae), Pijuí Ocráceo (Poe- cilurus scutatus) y Batará Boliviano (Thamnophilus sticturus)] y una por grabaciones de cantos [Piojito Trinador ³Serpophaga griseiceps)]. Se registraron dos especies nuevas para el chaco de Paraguay, y 22 especies nuevas para las zonas del Alto Chaco o Matogrosense (sensu Hayes 1995). Comparaciones preliminares entre sitios, junto con información adicional publicada, apoyan a la idea de que el recambio de especies de sitio a sitio es considerable en el bioma del chaco. La recien declarada Reserva de Biosfera del Chaco, si se imple- menta y se protege efectivamente, representa un paso importante hacía la conservación de la avifauna del norte del chaco. This diversity of habitats harbors 16.000+ vascular plants in more than 250 native families, about 5 times more species than the British Isles (in a territory with an area which is only 10% smaller). We traveled the Eastern Andes of Ecuador, enjoying comfortable lodges, exotic food, new plants, and dramatic landscapes. During 14 nights exploring this territory, we recorded about 500+ native plant species! Out of those, 35 are endemic to Ecuador and another 90+ are shared endemics: species found in Colombia (COL) or Perú (PER). Additionally, we watched and identified 102 colorful bird species, including local and difficult to see specialties such as Rufous-bellied Seedsnipe, and White-breasted Antpitta. Also we learned how these habitats nowadays face important conservation challenges. Day 1 Tuesday 25th September Travel from the UK to Quito.
