Peck Department of Biology, Carleton University, 1125 Colonel By Drive, Ottawa, Ontario K1S 5B6, Canada stewart_peck@carleton. ca Abstract. The beetle fauna of the island of Dominica is summarized. It is presently known to contain 269 genera, and 361 species (in 42 families), of which 347 are named at a species level. Of these, 62 species are endemic to the island. The other naturally occurring species number 262, and another 23 species are of such wide distribution that they have probably been accidentally introduced and distributed, at least in part, by human activities. Undoubtedly, the actual numbers of species on Dominica are many times higher than now reported. This highlights the poor level of knowledge of the beetles of Dominica and the Lesser Antilles in general. Of the species known to occur elsewhere, the largest numbers are shared with neighboring Guadeloupe (201), and then with South America (126), Puerto Rico (113), Cuba (107), and Mexico-Central America (108). The Antillean island chain probably represents the main avenue of natural overwater dispersal via intermediate stepping-stone islands. The distributional patterns of the species shared with Dominica and elsewhere in the Caribbean suggest stages in a dynamic taxon cycle of species origin, range expansion, distribution contraction, and re-speciation. Brown Mississippi Entomological Museum, Box 9775, Mississippi State University, MS 39762 * [email protected] Received: 019-XII-2013 Accepted: 20-XII-2013 Abstract: The Mississippi Entomological Museum (MEM) serves as a screening and identification center for the USDA-APHIS (Eastern Region). The screening center provides screening services for eastern states participating in Cooperative Agricultural Pest Surveys (CAPS). Each year thousands of samples are screened for exotic pests. Results from the 2012 and 2013 wood boring beetle surveys are reported here, including new state and county records. Four species representing new state records were detected in samples in 2012: Ambrosiodmus minor (Stebbing) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Scolytinae) and an unidentified species of Ambrosiodmus, probably A. lewisi (Blandford) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Scolytinae), were found in Alabama, and Xyleborinus octiesdentatus (Murayama) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Scolytinae) and Xylopsocus capusinus (Fabricius) (Coleoptera: Bostrichidae) were found in Mississippi. Screening in 2013 resulted in addition of new county records for these species in Alabama and Mississippi. Ges. 100 103-117 München, 15.10.2010 ISSN 0340-4943 New records of Bostrichidae (Insecta: Coleoptera, Bostrichidae, Bostrichinae, Lyctinae, Polycaoninae, Dinoderinae, Apatinae) Lan-Yu LIU Abstract This paper lists new and remarkable records of 107 species of bostrichid beetles from many parts of the world. Many records show that species are distributed more widely within a biogeographic region than previous records suggested, e.g. Cephalotoma perdepressa LESNE, 1937, Xylocis tortilicornis LESNE, 1901 in the Oriental region, Bostrychoplites megaceros LESNE, 1899 and Xyloperthella guineensis ROBERTS, 1976 in the Afrotropical region, and Trogoxylon giacobbii SANTORO, 1957 and Melalgus femoralis (FABRICIUS, 1792) in the Neotropical region. In some cases the species are recorded for the first time from a different biogeographic realm, e.g. the Oriental and Australian species Bostrychopsis parallela (LESNE, 1895) has been introduced into the Afrotropical region, the Neoguinean species Minthea humericosta LESNE, 1936 and the Afrotropical species Dinoderopsis serriger LESNE, 1923 have been introduced into the Oriental region, and the Madagascan species Apate geayi LESNE, 1907 has been introduced into the Mediterranean area. Introduction The bostrichid beetles have a world-wide distribution but are mainly found in tropical and arid areas. They are commonly known as powder-post beetles, because of the ability of the larvae and some adults to reduce sapwood, particularly of hardwoods, into a powdery frass. -

Jack, who was emeritus professor of entomology at the University of Hawaii and a research Associate at Bishop Museum, passed away suddenly on 5 February 2001, while visiting Bishop Museum and assisting us in sorting and identifying the wasps for this project. His passing left a huge void in our work and in our hearts. He was happiest when in the field collecting insects and also when identifying insects using a microscope, with his trademark pair of jewelers’ glasses flipped out of the way on his head.
