bilinen tarihi takriben otuz beş asırdan daha fazla bir zaman dilimini kapsar. Bu yönüyle Hinduizm, yaşayan en eski dinlerden biri olma özelliğine sahiptir. O, dayandığı dini temeller sayesinde asırlarca varlığını devam ettirmiştir. Hinduizmin dini temellerinin kaynağı kutsal metinleridir. Din literatürü açısından oldukça geniş olan Hint kutsal metinlerinin başlangıcı Vedalar dönemine kadar (M.Ö. 1200 civarı) uzanır. Bu itibarla Hint kutsal metinleri, insanlık tarihinin günümüze kadar ulaşan en eski dini metinlerinden birini oluşturmaktadır. Bilge kişilere ilham edildiğine inanılan şruti metinlerinin yanı sıra, beşeri kaynaklı olduğu kabul edilen destan, hikâye vb. smriti türü eserler, Hinduizmin zengin dini metinleri arasında yer alır. Hinduizmde çok geniş bir kutsal metin külliyatı olmasına karşın bunların hepsi aynı derecede önemli kabul edilmez. Bu zengin literatür içerisinde Upanishadlar’ın ayrı bir yeri vardır. Çünkü Upanishadlar içerik bakımından dikkat çekicidir ve çeşitli bölümleri itibariyle bazı farklılıklar ihtiva etmektedir. Hinduizmin temellerini oluşturan önemli dini metinlerden biri Upanishadlar’dır. Zira Hinduizmin temel taşları olan doğum-ölüm döngüsü (karma- tenasûh) ve kişinin bu doğum-ölüm döngüsünden hangi yollarla kurtulabileceği (moksha) gibi düşüncelerin teolojik temelleri ilk olarak Upanishad metinlerinde yer alır. Diğer taraftan Upanishadlar’ın ortaya koymuş olduğu bir takım düşünceler, Upabnishad sonrası ortaya çıkan Hint felsefi ekollerini derinden etkilemiş ve onların kendi

Ambedkar was born on the 14 th April, 1891. After graduating from Elphinstone College, Bombay in 1912, he joined Columbia University, USA where he was awarded Ph.D. Later he joined the London School of Economics & obtained a degree of D.Sc. ( Economics) and was called to the Bar from Gray's Inn. He returned to India in 1923 and started the 'Bahishkrit Hitkarini Sabha' for the education and economic improvement of the lower classes from where he came. One of the greatest contributions of Dr. Ambedkar was in respect of Fundamental Rights & Directive Principles of State Policy enshrined in the Constitution of India. The Fundamental Rights provide for freedom, equality, and abolition of Untouchability & remedies to ensure the enforcement of rights. The Directive Principles enshrine the broad guiding principles for securing fair distribution of wealth & better living conditions. On the 14 th October, 1956, Babasaheb Ambedkar a scholar in Hinduism embraced Buddhism. He continued the crusade for social revolution until the end of his life on the 6th December 1956. He was honoured with the highest national honour, 'Bharat Ratna' in April 1990 .

The extraordinary nature of such history may be perceived, if it were suggested that European history should be constructed merely out of theological literature. What would raise a smile if applied to Europe has been soberly accepted when applied to India. This contrast is full justification for a consideration of what historical tradition has to tell us, and the results obtained from an examination of Puranic and epic tradition as well as of the Rigveda and Vedic literature are set out in the following pages.
