Interpreting tempo and rubato in Chopin’s music: A matter of tradition or individual style? Li-San Ting A thesis in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy University of New South Wales School of the Arts and Media Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences June 2013 ABSTRACT The main goal of this thesis is to gain a greater understanding of Chopin performance and interpretation, particularly in relation to tempo and rubato. This thesis is a comparative study between pianists who are associated with the Chopin tradition, primarily the Polish pianists of the early twentieth century, along with French pianists who are connected to Chopin via pedagogical lineage, and several modern pianists playing on period instruments. Through a detailed analysis of tempo and rubato in selected recordings, this thesis will explore the notions of tradition and individuality in Chopin playing, based on principles of pianism and pedagogy that emerge in Chopin’s writings, his composition, and his students’ accounts. Many pianists and teachers assume that a tradition in playing Chopin exists but the basis for this notion is often not made clear. Certain pianists are considered part of the Chopin tradition because of their indirect pedagogical connection to Chopin. I will investigate claims about tradition in Chopin playing in relation to tempo and rubato and highlight similarities and differences in the playing of pianists of the same or different nationality, pedagogical line or era. I will reveal how the literature on Chopin’s principles regarding tempo and rubato relates to any common or unique traits found in selected recordings. -

JANUSZ OLEJNICZAK Nato a Breslavia, ha studiato a Varsavia e Łódź con Luiza Walewska, Ryszard Bakst e Zbigniew Drzewieck, poi a Parigi e in Svizzera con Witold Małcużyński. Si è diplomato alla High School of Music di Varsavianel 1974 nel corso di Barbara Hesse-Bukowska, e ha continuato gli studi con Victor Merzhanov a Varsavia e Paul Badura-Skoda a Essen (1977-78). Fu il più giovane vincitore premiato all’ottavo International Fryderyk Chopin Piano Competition nel 1970; venne inoltre premiato al Concorso internazionale Alfredo Casella a Napoli. Janusz Olejniczak ha suonato nelle più importanti sale concerto di Europa, delle Americhe, di Asia e Australia, tra cui la Filarmonica di Berlino, il Teatro Colón di Buenos Aires, la Salle Pleyel di Parigi, la Suntory Hall di Tokyo, il Lincoln Center di Washington, la Tonhalle di Düsseldorf, il Concertgebouw di Amsterdam. Per quattro anni ha insegnato alla Music Academy di Cracovia. Fryderyk Chopin in Popular Instrumental Music
Interdisciplinary Studies in Musicology g, 2011 © Department o f Musicology, Adam Mickiewicz University, Poznań, Poland JAKUB KASPERSKI (Poznań) Fryderyk Chopin in popular instrumental music ABSTRACT: The author considers whether Fryderyk Chopin and his oeuvre may be regarded as part of popular culture - and if so, to what extent. However, the text is mostly taken up with analysis of popular instrumental music inspired by Chopin’s works in various ways: from simple Quotation, adaptation and transcription to more sophisticated instrumentation and arrangement, free improvisation or even the crea tion of a completely new work derived from a single motif or sample from Chopin. ConseQuently, the author deals with the problem of reception, but also with the issue of transculturation and the relationship between high and popular culture. The article shows and describes the variety of Chopin inspiration in a wide range of styles and genres of popular music, such as rock music, easy-listening, electronic music, dance music and disco. KEYWORDS: Fryderyk Chopin, popular culture, popular music, instrumental music, rock music, electronic music, inspiration, reception Fryderyk Chopin and his oeuvre shattered the image of the artist inherited from Ludwig van Beethoven and, together with German pioneers of romanticism, opened a new chapter in the history of music. ltzhak Perlman February 12 , 1996 Wait Chape l 8:00 p.m. A Morris and Lillian Sosnik Memorial Concert at Wake Forest University ITZHAK PERLMAN On October 13, 1966, the Wake Forest College Artists Series presented Itzhak Perlman, violinist, for the first time noting that he was one of the acknowledged leaders among the world's young violinists. The program also referred to his appearances on the Ed Sullivan Televison Show in 1958, his winning of the Leventritt International Competi- tion (after which his borrowed violin was stolen, later recovered in an Eighth Avenue pawnshop) and his first national concert tour in the 1965/66 season under the manage- ment of the legendary Sol Hu rok. Thirty years later, Mr. Perlman returns to Wake Forest and the Secrest Artists Series as a superstar within the rarified ranks of world-class musicians. It is not only his supreme artistic credentials that earn him this title, but his combination of talent, chami, human,ity and communication skills recognized by audiences internationally. President Reagan honored Mr. Perlman with a "Medal of Liberty''•i.n 1986. ltzhak Perlman has appeared with every major orchestra and in recitals and festivals throughout the world.
