Interpreting tempo and rubato in Chopin’s music: A matter of tradition or individual style? Li-San Ting A thesis in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy University of New South Wales School of the Arts and Media Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences June 2013 ABSTRACT The main goal of this thesis is to gain a greater understanding of Chopin performance and interpretation, particularly in relation to tempo and rubato. This thesis is a comparative study between pianists who are associated with the Chopin tradition, primarily the Polish pianists of the early twentieth century, along with French pianists who are connected to Chopin via pedagogical lineage, and several modern pianists playing on period instruments. Through a detailed analysis of tempo and rubato in selected recordings, this thesis will explore the notions of tradition and individuality in Chopin playing, based on principles of pianism and pedagogy that emerge in Chopin’s writings, his composition, and his students’ accounts. Many pianists and teachers assume that a tradition in playing Chopin exists but the basis for this notion is often not made clear. Certain pianists are considered part of the Chopin tradition because of their indirect pedagogical connection to Chopin. I will investigate claims about tradition in Chopin playing in relation to tempo and rubato and highlight similarities and differences in the playing of pianists of the same or different nationality, pedagogical line or era. I will reveal how the literature on Chopin’s principles regarding tempo and rubato relates to any common or unique traits found in selected recordings. -

JANUSZ OLEJNICZAK Nato a Breslavia, ha studiato a Varsavia e Łódź con Luiza Walewska, Ryszard Bakst e Zbigniew Drzewieck, poi a Parigi e in Svizzera con Witold Małcużyński. Si è diplomato alla High School of Music di Varsavianel 1974 nel corso di Barbara Hesse-Bukowska, e ha continuato gli studi con Victor Merzhanov a Varsavia e Paul Badura-Skoda a Essen (1977-78). Fu il più giovane vincitore premiato all’ottavo International Fryderyk Chopin Piano Competition nel 1970; venne inoltre premiato al Concorso internazionale Alfredo Casella a Napoli. Janusz Olejniczak ha suonato nelle più importanti sale concerto di Europa, delle Americhe, di Asia e Australia, tra cui la Filarmonica di Berlino, il Teatro Colón di Buenos Aires, la Salle Pleyel di Parigi, la Suntory Hall di Tokyo, il Lincoln Center di Washington, la Tonhalle di Düsseldorf, il Concertgebouw di Amsterdam. Per quattro anni ha insegnato alla Music Academy di Cracovia. Fryderyk Chopin in Popular Instrumental Music
Interdisciplinary Studies in Musicology g, 2011 © Department o f Musicology, Adam Mickiewicz University, Poznań, Poland JAKUB KASPERSKI (Poznań) Fryderyk Chopin in popular instrumental music ABSTRACT: The author considers whether Fryderyk Chopin and his oeuvre may be regarded as part of popular culture - and if so, to what extent. However, the text is mostly taken up with analysis of popular instrumental music inspired by Chopin’s works in various ways: from simple Quotation, adaptation and transcription to more sophisticated instrumentation and arrangement, free improvisation or even the crea tion of a completely new work derived from a single motif or sample from Chopin. ConseQuently, the author deals with the problem of reception, but also with the issue of transculturation and the relationship between high and popular culture. The article shows and describes the variety of Chopin inspiration in a wide range of styles and genres of popular music, such as rock music, easy-listening, electronic music, dance music and disco. KEYWORDS: Fryderyk Chopin, popular culture, popular music, instrumental music, rock music, electronic music, inspiration, reception Fryderyk Chopin and his oeuvre shattered the image of the artist inherited from Ludwig van Beethoven and, together with German pioneers of romanticism, opened a new chapter in the history of music. Preis beim renommierten „Internationalen Musikwettbewerb der ARD“ 1985 zu unterrichtet Peter Sadlo seit vielen Jahren als Professor an der Hochschule für Musik und den unumstrittenen Sternen seiner Zunft. Er steht für eine der geradlinigsten, aber auch Theater München und auch an der Universität Mozarteum Salzburg. Sein Credo, dass das ungewöhnlichsten, wenngleich auf außergewöhnlichem Talent beruhenden Karrieren im saubere Erarbeiten von Schlagtechniken unerlässlich ist für einen sicheren Umgang mit Fach Schlagzeug. Klängen, beschäftigt ihn so stark, dass er eine akribische Dissertation zu diesem Thema verfasst, mit der er 1997 auch die Doktorwürde im Fach Musikwissenschaft an der Universität Der gebürtige Nürnberger wird während seiner Studienzeit mit zahlreichen Auszeichnungen Bukarest erlangt. -

Będzie muzycznie i klimatycznie. Wartością tegorocznego festiwalu będzie niewątpliwie jego program oraz wyjątkowi artyści. Gwiazdą jest niewątpliwie Kevin Kenner (USA) - genialny pianista, zwycięzca Międzynarodowego Konkursu Pianistycznego im. F. Chopina w Warszawie (1990). Ponadto zaproszenie do udziału w koncertach przyjęli Krzysztof Herdzin oraz koncertujące na całym świecie Motion Trio. W zacnym gronie festiwalowych gwiazd wystąpi młody zespół z Bydgoszczy – BMF Piano Trio, odnoszący spektakularne sukcesy na międzynarodowych konkursach. Jak zwykle gospodarzem festiwalowych koncertów będzie bydgoski Barock Quartet. Festiwalowe koncerty odbędą się w odrestaurowanej i efektownie prezentującej się sali koncertowej Collegium Copernicanum. Tegoroczna przeprowadzka z hali pomp wodociągowych (miejsca dotychczasowych edycji festiwalu) spowodowana jest trwającymi pracami modernizacyjnymi obiektu. Głównym założeniem gospodarzy jest popularyzowanie kameralistyki, przedstawienie jej atrakcyjnego oblicza stwarzając jednocześnie festiwalowym gościom jak najlepsze warunki do -
