EARL CAMERON Sapphire
EARL CAMERON Sapphire Reuniting Cameron with director Basil Dearden after Pool of London, and hastened into production following the Notting Hill riots of summer 1958, Sapphire continued Dearden and producer Michael Relph’s valuable run of ‘social problem’ pictures, this time using a murder-mystery plot as a vehicle to sharply probe contemporary attitudes to race. Cameron’s role here is relatively small, but, playing the brother of the biracial murder victim of the title, the actor makes his mark in a couple of memorable scenes. Like Dearden’s later Victim (1961), Sapphire was scripted by the undervalued Janet Green. Alex Ramon, bfi.org.uk Sapphire is a graphic portrayal of ethnic tensions in 1950s London, much more widespread and malign than was represented in Dearden’s Pool of London (1951), eight years earlier. The film presents a multifaceted and frequently surprising portrait that involves not just ‘the usual suspects’, but is able to reveal underlying insecurities and fears of ordinary people. Sapphire is also notable for showing a successful, middle-class black community – unusual even in today’s British films. Dearden deftly manipulates tension with the drip-drip of revelations about the murdered girl’s life. Sapphire is at first assumed to be white, so the appearance of her black brother Dr Robbins (Earl Cameron) is genuinely astonishing, provoking involuntary reactions from those he meets, and ultimately exposing the real killer. Small incidents of civility and kindness, such as that by a small child on a scooter to Dr Robbins, add light to a very dark film. Earl Cameron reprises a role for which he was famous, of the decent and dignified black man, well aware of the burden of his colour. -

Metta’s IN THE WILLOWS WRITER/DIRECTOR'S NOTE Welcome to ‘The Willows’! 20 years ago (wow, but actually yes - 20 years!) at my very average comprehensive school in the West Country I had an English teacher called Miss Vernon who was one oF those inspirational teachers that make you think you can do anything - like go to OxFord University, become a writer and write a Five star smash hit musical. 14 years ago (at said University) I founded a theatre company called Metta Theatre to represent unheard voices and stories - to champion and celebrate the lives oF people that don’t tend to get represented on our stages. And to make epic beautiFul life-changing theatre. It’s taken me the last 5 years to raise the money to make In The Willows happen (though only 3 years to write it - the truth of new musicals taking ages to make it into ‘production’, it’s not the writing time - it’s the Fund-raising time!) and it was absolutely worth the wait. It is an honour to share this story with you and I hope that everyone in the theatre today Finds something in it that speaks to them - be it the politics, be it the vulnerability of these young characters and their challenging lives, be it the epic spectacle and joyousness oF the music, design and choreography. Every single member oF the Willows team has poured their heart and soul into this production and we all hope that this is just the beginning of the journey For this extraordinary show. -

She was the most accomplished performer I have ever seen and she could mimic any person we knew in our village and beyond. She passed her performative genius to me and I went into Theatre and Drama owing to the art of storytelling that she gifted me; To my eldest sister the late Mary Wangui Gitei for her faith in me. When all seemed lost after passing my K.P.C.E well enough to be admitted into high school, only to discover that my name had deliberately been omitted from the application list by my father’s enemies, she asserted that no matter what the evil ones did, I would “die a degree man.” Those words became an inspiration and a motivation to strive towards their fulfillment; To my wife Sarah Namunyak Nakeel who in her quiet demeanor has expanded my space as I wander through the vast wilderness gleaning for knowledge and ideas, and to my sons Newton Nyutho and Moses Lemaiyan…May you pursue your dreams to their fullest conclusions. -

INTERVJU MED EARL CAMERON (PINDER I ÅSKBOLLEN), AUGUSTI 2012 Intervju av Anders Frejdh, redaktör för From Sweden with Love. [FSWL:] Did you always want to become an actor? [Earl Cameron:] I had, from my early childhood, a secret yearning for acting but I was far too shy to mention it to anyone. How did you become involved in Thunderball in the first place? I had worked on three films with Coby Brockley "Safaria, Odongo and Killers of Killers of Kilamanjaro" and he wanted me on the first Bond picture "Dr. No" but Saltzman did not think I was right for the part of quarrel however when "Thunderball came along" the part of Pinder came my way. How did you prepare for the film once you were contracted? Did you read the novel or any other of the Fleming novels? I never read any of the Ian Fleming's novels, but the part of Pinder is fairly straight forward which did not cause for much study. How was it like filming on location in the Bahamas? Location on Nassau was very glamorous, more than any other I had or have been on in my seven weeks there was a delight. What did you think about the relationship between Sean Connery and the rest of the crew? As I remember, in relationship with Connery, he was extremely friendly and also with myself. What happened at the end of filming this film, any end-of-shooting party or similar event? Did you attend the premiere and/or any other Bond film premieres over the years? I did not attend the premiere as I was away at the time of the event, in fact, at the end of the filming, I was in Manchester at Grenada Television working on a Production "The Life of Bessie Smith".
