‘LOVE’S CHRISTMAS JOURNEY’ CAST BIOS SEAN ASTIN (Mayor William Wayne) – Sean Astin is one of Hollywood's most respected young actors with a distinctive list of projects and credits. Astin starred as beloved Sam Gamgee in the Academy Award®-winning "The Lord of the Rings Trilogy." The three films have grossed over $3 billion worldwide and have entered the history books of classic cinema. Astin has just recently signed up for Nickelodeon‟s re-launch of “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.” He will lend his voice to Raphael in the latest animated incarnation of the hugely successful franchise which premieres in fall 2012. Currently, he is lending his voice to Playhouse Disney‟s “Special Agent Oso.” Astin stars as a lovable, bumbling special agent-in-training who enlists viewers at home to help complete his missions. Premiering fall 2011, Astin heads an all star cast in “And They‟re Off,” an independent comedy about thoroughbred horseracing that also stars Kevin Nealon, Cheri Oteri and Martin Mull. Astin also has two other comedies in the can: “Stay Cool” about an older man‟s homecoming whose cast includes Winona Ryder, Chevy Chase, Hillary Duff and more, and “Demoted” in which Astin plays a mean-spirited prank whose victim becomes his boss. Adding to his seemingly boundless list of occupations, Astin released his acting memoir titled There and Back Again: An Actor's Tale. The book opened at #1 on the New York Times Best- seller list, putting him on the map as a true literary story-teller as well as the unabashed screen actor audiences fall in love with again and again.

Mémoi In attempting to portray the Holocaust and crimes against humanity on the The Shoah on screen – representing crimes against humanity big screen, film-makers generally have to address the key question of realism. This is both an ethical and an artistic issue. The full range of approaches has emember been adopted, covering documentaries and fiction, historical reconstructions such as Steven Spielberg’s Schindler’s List, depicting reality in all its details, and more symbolic films such as Roberto Benigni’s Life is beautiful. Some films have been very controversial, and it is important to understand why. Is cinema the best way of informing the younger generations about what moire took place, or should this perhaps be left, for example, to CD-Roms, videos Memoi or archive collections? What is the difference between these and the cinema as an art form? Is it possible to inform and appeal to the emotions without being explicit? Is emotion itself, though often very intense, not ambivalent? These are the questions addressed by this book which sets out to show that the cinema, a major art form today, cannot merely depict the horrors of concentration camps but must also nurture greater sensitivity among increas- Mémoire ingly younger audiences, inured by the many images of violence conveyed in the media. ireRemem moireRem The Shoah on screen – www.coe.int Representing crimes The Council of Europe has 47 member states, covering virtually the entire continent of Europe. • A Critical Analysis of the Black President in Film and Television
“WELL, IT IS BECAUSE HE’S BLACK”: A CRITICAL ANALYSIS OF THE BLACK PRESIDENT IN FILM AND TELEVISION Phillip Lamarr Cunningham A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY August 2011 Committee: Dr. Angela M. Nelson, Advisor Dr. Ashutosh Sohoni Graduate Faculty Representative Dr. Michael Butterworth Dr. Susana Peña Dr. Maisha Wester © 2011 Phillip Lamarr Cunningham All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Angela Nelson, Ph.D., Advisor With the election of the United States’ first black president Barack Obama, scholars have begun to examine the myriad of ways Obama has been represented in popular culture. However, before Obama’s election, a black American president had already appeared in popular culture, especially in comedic and sci-fi/disaster films and television series. Thus far, scholars have tread lightly on fictional black presidents in popular culture; however, those who have tend to suggest that these presidents—and the apparent unimportance of their race in these films—are evidence of the post-racial nature of these texts. However, this dissertation argues the contrary. This study’s contention is that, though the black president appears in films and televisions series in which his presidency is presented as evidence of a post-racial America, he actually fails to transcend race. Instead, these black cinematic presidents reaffirm race’s primacy in American culture through consistent portrayals and continued involvement in comedies and disasters. In order to support these assertions, this study first constructs a critical history of the fears of a black presidency, tracing those fears from this nation’s formative years to the present.

Couples were randomly assigned to one of three month-long programs: • • compassion training • movie-and-talk required about twenty hours of therapist-supervised lectures and practice sessions, whereas movie-and-talk required half as much time, involved watching movies, and was almost entirely done at home. The end result? All three groups halved the divorce rate of the control group, from 24% to 11%. Incredible, isn’t it? Who knew that discussing a movie could be that powerful for couples? Discussing relationship movies, And it is especially helpful as a way to augment such programs. “For these couples to stop and look and say, ‘You know, I have yelled at you like that before. I have called you names before and that’s not nice. That’s not what I want to do to the person I love the most.’ Just that insight alone, is likely what makes this intervention work,” lead researcher Ronald Rogge said. Is there a catch? Sort of. It can’t be just any movie. It needs to be a romantic comedy – and not just any rom-com. The movie needs to have intimate relationships as a major plot focus. time to portraying the ups and downs of day-to-day life in a committed romantic relationship. • REFUGE a Film by JESSICA GOLDBERG
Strand Releasing presents REFUGE A film by JESSICA GOLDBERG Starring Krysten Ritter, Brian Geraghty, Logan Huffman, Madeleine Martin PRELIMINARY PRESS NOTES Official Selection: Hamptons International Film Festival 2012 Country of Origin: United States Format: DCP/1.85/Color Sound Format: 5.1 Surround Sound Running Time: 84 minutes Genre: Drama Not Rated National Press Contact: Jenna Martin / Marcus Hu Strand Releasing Phone: 310.836.7500 [email protected] [email protected] Please download photos from our website: http://extranet.strandreleasing.com/secure/login.aspx?username=PRESS&password=STRAND SYNOPSIS This heartwarming romance finds Amy (Krysten Ritter of VERONICA MARS and BREAKING BAD) as a young woman raising her two, slightly younger, but overly needy siblings. Amy has to balance her personal life with her responsibilities. But when Sam (Brian Geraghty of BOARDWALK EMPIRE and TRUE BLOOD), a young handsome stranger rolls into town, he becomes entrenched in the family while he and Amy, against all odds, begin to create a life they never thought possible. DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT Refuge is based on the stage play I wrote as a young student at Juilliard. The play, like the movie, is an odd little love story about two people who want different very things in the world but come together anyway. It’s also a story about family. The family we’re stuck with, the family that makes us who we are, and the new families we make as we go forth in the world. It’s about the delicate struggle between our responsibility to our siblings, lovers, husbands and wives, and our personal hopes and desires.
