The slides cover a wide range of subjects and geographic locations, including extensive coverage of the Los Angeles 1984 Olympics. The fashion magazines are from a variety of countries, predominantly Italy, and include celebrity photographs and interviews. Please consult repository. Processing Information Processed in 2018 by graduate students Alan Schooling and Myles Mikulic at Claremont Graduate University, in the Special Collections branch of the Honnold Mudd Library with assistance from Lisa Crane. Materials have been stored in acid free folders and placed in record boxes. The slides are in their original slide pages and include any supplemental materials. Folders have been organized alphabetically by subject, based on the original slide page titles by Leonelli. Magazine clippings have been arranged alphabetically by publication title, then chronologically. Biographical / Historical Elisa Leonelli was born in Modena, Italy. In 1970 she graduated from the University of Bologna with a BA in Film Aesthetics and became a film critic for the Pesaro Film Festival. During that time she developed an interest in photography and soon after moved to the United States to work on the production of avant-garde television (The Chicken Little Comedy Show, 1972; Beneath the War of the Worlds, 1974). In Los Angeles she began working as a photojournalist; her first assignment was to photograph the 100 best places in Los Angeles for Coast in 1974. She went on to photograph for Time, Newsweek, the Los Angeles Times, Herald Examiner, Los Angeles Magazine, Westways, and others. Between 1981 and 1986 Leonelli specialized in travel photography, visiting such countries as China, Mexico, Japan, Peru, Brazil, India, and Nepal. In 1984 she covered the Los Angeles Olympics and had her work published in the book Olimpiadi 1984. In 1987 Leonelli became the Los Angeles correspondent for the Italian film magazine Ciak, and served as the film editor of Venice Magazine from 1990 to 1999. In 1997 she received an MA in Critical Studies from the University of Southern California's School of Cinematic Arts. In 2007 she wrote the book Robert Redford and the American West. Leonelli has written feature articles about film actors and directors for numerous Italian publications, including Epoca, Elle, Marie Claire, Gioia, Donna Moderna, Glamour, Myself, and the Spanish film magazine Cinemanía. She has been the Los Angeles correspondent for the Italian monthly Best Movie since 2005, editor of the Reynier Village Blog since 2009, and a regular contributor to Cultural Weekly since 2015. Arrangement This collection has been arranged into the following series: Series 1: Slides and supplemental materials, 1973-1999 Series 2: Magazine clippings, 1987-2017 Elisa Leonelli Photographs and H.Mss.1102 2 Essays Collection Materials have been organized alphabetically by subject or periodical title. Related Materials Leonelli maintains a website featuring her photographs and interviews: http://elisaleonelli.com/ Scope and Contents The collection contains materials relating to the career of photojournalist Elisa Leonelli. The majority were created for general interest periodicals, particularly fashion and travel magazines. Items include photographic slides, photographs, photograph negatives, press releases, model release forms, and magazine clippings. Series 1 contains 35mm slides of various subjects and accompanying supplemental materials such as press releases, release forms, and photographic prints. Series 2 contains magazine clippings from various international fashion magazines for which Leonelli had photographed and conducted actor and director interviews. Shelley Levene, who has a sick daughter, does everything in his Glengarry Glen Ross to get better leads from his boss, John Williamson, but to no avail. When his coworker Dave Moss comes up with a plan to steal the leads, things get complicated for the tough-talking Glengarry Glen Ross. Joseph M. Caracciolo Jr. Jerry Tokofsky Stanley R. William Barclay Bob Shaw. Five minutes into the picture and there's so much awesomeness on the screen that it's almost overwhelming. Second time through and just as enjoyable as the first. First-rate cast, first-rate dialogue. Feels like a modernized Glengarry Glen Ross of a Salesman, with matching commentary on working class life "we work too hard"on shifting power structures the young managing the oldand on the emotional economics of capitalism subjection vs satisfaction. I didn't remember the characters being so consistently foul-mouthed, and this time through was slightly distracted by the film's heavy reliance on vulgarity. Nonetheless, this is an absolutely captivating film recommended to anyone who loves great actors, great characters, or great dialogue. It's amazing how a film focused exclusively on people talking can be so engrossing.

    Jessica Lange Regis Dialogue with Molly Haskell, 1997 Bruce Jenkins: Let me say that these dialogues have for the better part of this decade focused on that part of cinema devoted to narrative or dramatic filmmaking, and we've had evenings with actors, directors, cinematographers, and I would say really especially with those performers that we identify with the cutting edge of narrative filmmaking. In describing tonight's guest, Molly Haskell spoke of a creative artist who not only did a sizeable number of important projects but more importantly, did the projects that she herself wanted to see made. The same I think can be said about Molly Haskell. She began in the 1960s working in New York for the French Film Office at that point where the French New Wave needed a promoter and a writer and a translator. She eventually wrote the landmark book From Reverence to Rape on women in cinema from 1973 and republished in 1987, and did sizable stints as the film reviewer for Vogue magazine, The Village Voice, New York magazine, New York Observer, and more recently, for On the Issues. Her most recent book, Holding My Own in No Man's Land, contains her last two decades' worth of writing. I'm please to say it's in the Walker bookstore, as well. Our other guest tonight needs no introduction here in the Twin Cities nor in Cloquet, Minnesota, nor would I say anyplace in the world that motion pictures are watched and cherished. She's an internationally recognized star, but she's really a unique star.

Whereas, I usually visit for three or four days, this time was for only two. As is often the case, the less time one has, the more there is to do. I am not complaining, mind you, because it resulted in two wonderful interviews that are included in this issue. We first interviewed Bai Ling several years ago when she was filming Love Ranch with Helen Mirren and Joe Pesci. This year, we were fortunate to have her join us at the Operation Smile gala where she attracted considerable interest on the red carpet as she struck her signature “Bai Ling” poses. The following day, we met for an interview during which Bai offered us some insight into what drives her and counters some of her public persona. If you happen to look at her acting resume on imdb, you cannot help but be impressed by the sheer volume of this actor’s work. Millions of fans have enjoyed the film Pitch Perfect which was released last month. I had not had the opportunity to see it when I received a call from Hana Mae Lee’s publicist asking if I would like to interview her.

During its pioneering era, Hollywood was dominated by women who occupied every aspect of the filmmaking process, both off and on screen; but the consolidation of the studio system in the 1920s and 1930s served to reduce the scope of opportunities for women working in off-screen roles. Off screen, a pattern of gendered employment was effectively established, one that continues to confine women to so-called “feminine” crafts such as scriptwriting and costume. Celebrated exceptions like Ida Lupino, Dorothy Arzner, Norah Ephron, Nancy Meyers, and Katherine Bigelow have found various ways to succeed as producers and directors in Hollywood’s continuing male-dominated culture. More typically, as recently as 2011, “women comprised only 18% of directors, executive producers, cinematographers and editors working on the top 250 domestic grossing films” (Lauzen 2012: 1). At the same time, on-screen representations came to be increasingly predicated on a gendered star system that privileges hetero-masculine desires, and are dominated by historically specific discourses of idealized and fetishized feminine beauty that, in turn, severely limit the number and types of roles available to women. As far back as 1973 Molly Haskell observed that the elision of beauty and youth that underpins Hollywood casting impacted upon the professional longevity of female stars, who, at the first visible signs of aging, were deemed “too old or over-ripe for a part,” except as a marginalized mother or older sister.
