The purpose of the Roman Argei ceremony, during which the Vestal Virgins harvested made and paraded rush puppets only to throw them into the Tiber, is widely debated. Modern historians supply three main reasons for the purpose of the Argei: an agrarian act, a scapegoat, and finally as an offering averting deceased spirits or Lares. I suggest that the ceremony also related to war and the spectacle of displaying war casualties. I compare the ancient Near East and Rome and connect the element of war and husbandry and claim that the Argei paralleled the sacred marriage. In addition to an agricultural and purification rite, these rituals may have served as sympathetic magic for pre- and inter-war periods. As of yet, no author has proposed the Argei as a ceremony related to war. By looking at the Argei holistically I open the door for a new direction of inquiry on the Argei ceremony, fertility cults in the Near East and in Rome, and on the execution of war criminals. -

The fundamental concept of sacred space defined the nature of the holiness that pervaded the temple. The idea of sacred space included the ancient view of the temple as a mountain. Other subsets of the basic notion of sacred space include the role of the creation story in temple ritual, its status as an image of a heavenly temple and its location on the axis mundi, the temple as the site of the hieros gamos, the substantial role of the temple regarding kingship and coronation rites, the temple as a symbol of the Tree of Life, and the role played by water as a symbol of physical and spiritual blessings streaming forth from the temple. Temple ritual, architecture, and construction techniques expressed these concepts in various ways. These expressions, identified in the literary and archaeological records, were surprisingly consistent throughout the ancient Near East across large expanses of space and time. Under the general heading of Techniques of Construction and Decoration, this thesis examines the concept of the primordial mound and its application in temple architecture, the practice of foundation deposits, the purposes and functions of enclosure walls, principles of orientation, alignment, and measurement, and interior decorations. -

ABSTRACT Ofthe many paintings in Pompeii, the frescoes in the Villa of the Mysteries are an example ofthe most beautiful and the most intriguing. These fascinating images have become the focus of much scholarly research and consequent debate that has continued since Amedeo Maiuri (Chief Archaeologist ofPompeii in the 1920's and overseer of the excavation of the Villa ofthe Mysteries) published his belief that the paintings represented the initiation of a young woman into the cult of Dionysus. The paintings were executed during the first half of the first century BCE at a time when many different mystery cults were popular. Some rituals even overlapped, having elements of more than one cult. This has resulted in a variety ofintetpretations as to the god (or gods) represented and the overall meaning of the paintings by numerous scholars, based on a plethora of reasons. In the attempt to investigate and compare these differing opinions and the information used to form them, this dissertation concludes that Maiuri's theory is the most plausible. -
Greek Mysteries
GREEK MYSTERIES Mystery cults represent the spiritual attempts of the ancient Greeks to deal with their mortality. As these cults had to do with the individual’s inner self, privacy was paramount and was secured by an initiation ceremony, a personal ritual that estab- lished a close bond between the individual and the gods. Once initiated, the indi- vidual was liberated from the fear of death by sharing the eternal truth, known only to the immortals. Because of the oath of silence taken by the initiates, a thick veil of secrecy covers those cults and archaeology has become our main tool in deciphering their meaning. In a field where archaeological research constantly brings new data to light, this volume provides a close analysis of the most recent discoveries, as well as a critical re-evaluation of the older evidence. The book focuses not only on the major cults of Eleusis and Samothrace, but also on the lesser-known Mysteries in various parts of Greece, over a period of almost two thousand years, from the Late Bronze Age to the Roman Imperial period. In our mechanized and technology-oriented world, a book on Greek spirituality is both timely and appropriate. The authors’ inter-disciplinary approach extends beyond the archaeological evidence to cover the textual and iconographic sources and provides a better understanding of the history and rituals of those cults. Written by an international team of acknowledged experts, Greek Mysteries is an important contribution to our understanding of Greek religion and society. Michael B. By narrowing my study to this geographical and chronological scope, my research aims to add to the traditional narrative of Theban history by focusing on religious history rather than the political or military. More particularly, by using both literature (Classical Greek tragedies) as well as material culture found in exceptional religious settings of the Thesmophoria and Kabeirion, I strive to delineate some of the religious practices taking place in the polis of Thebes during the Classical age. While the Theban tragedies provide a view of religion from a broader perspective, the material evidence of the festival of the Thesmophoria and the rites to the Kabeiroi provide a glimpse into the practices of Theban religion that lie outside the traditional, Olympian pantheon. I argue that studying Theban literature and votive offerings in tandem can provide a perspective at the micro-level of Greek religion that can be expanded in order to understand the religious landscape of ancient Greece on a much deeper and richer level. [The Pomegranate 7.1 (2005) 98-111] ISSN 1528-0268 (Print) ISSN 1743-1735 (Online) Book Reviews Jacob Rabinowitz, The Rotting Goddess: The Origin of the Witch in Classical Antiquity’s Demonization of Fertility Religion (Brooklyn, NY: Autonomedia, 1998), 153 pp., $14.00 (paper). The dramatic title for this book refers to the fascinating and comparatively obscure Greek goddess Hekate. Essentially, Rabinowitz’s thesis holds that this figure was originally a Neolithic agricultural deity from Anatolia (akin to the Sumerian Innana and the Canaanite Ashtoreth), who was imported by the Greeks into their pantheon prior to being adopted by the Romans, and that this lengthy, thousand-year journey across the ancient Mediterranean world saw her gradual degeneration from munificent fertility goddess to maleficent proto-witch figure. On the surface, this type of narrative is instantly recognisable to followers of modern nature religions; however, Rabinowitz’s arguments are a lot more subtle (and plausible) than those which typically appear in such circles, describing as they do a convoluted rather than contiguous development, and backed up (mainly) by copious and detailed classical sources. According to Rabinowitz, in addition to her role as matronly goddess of growing things, Hekate also functioned as a hypostasis or personification of the ‘World Tree’ (the ‘Cosmic Axis’ that features in many mythologies worldwide), having the ability— as was apparently common among fertility deities, such as her Sumerian counterpart— to traverse celestial, human and chthonic realms. But for the Greeks, Hekate’s range was horizontal as well as vertical, since she also served as a goddess of the crossroads (an association the author attributes to her later mergence with Enodia, another fertility goddess). -

Year-End Festivals of the Athenian Acropolis Anita Hart The mythology of the Athenian Acropolis begins with the quarrel between Athene and Poseidon. The rest of Athenian mythological history, it seems, is dedicated to patching up this little squabble. The cult of Poseidon is housed within the very same building as Athene’s own cult on the Acropolis. Important festivals involve, even require, the cooperation of both gods and their priests for the good of the city. But why should the mortal inhabitants of Athens have held such a vested interest in the ancient and decisively-settled contest of two gods? Why worry so much about honoring Poseidon, the loser of the contest? Given Athens’ importance as a seaport, I propose that the Greeks were intent upon facilitating a business partnership between the two divinities, despite their personal animosity, in order that the city’s maritime industry might flourish. Citizens of Athens played out their efforts to promote reconciliation between Athena and Poseidon through year-end festivals on the Acropolis. Athens had four important year-end festivals which took place on the Acropolis. In this paper I shall discuss the Arrephoria, Plynteria, and Skiraphoria festivals. The first, the Arrephoria, was a night-time ritual of carrying objects to a sacred cave. The Plynteria was a purification ritual in which the cult statue of Athene was taken down to the ocean to be washed. The Skiraphoria was a more complex and secretive ritual, in which the priestess of Athene and the priest of Poseidon Erechtheus proceeded out of the Erechtheion to Skiron, between Athens and Eleusis. -

This study presents a historic overview of Indo-European studies and shows the cosmological continuity of the horse-sacrificial tradition based on specific cultural innovations and ecological adaptations over time. It also sheds new light on cultural history through in-depth analysis of horse sacrifice in culture and cosmology. From Sintashta in Russia and the steppes to the legendary ashwamedha ritual in India and horse sacrifices in Roman, Greek and Irish traditions, the analysis finds that horse sacrifice appears to have been most successful in Scandinavia, with classic sites and funerals such as Sagaholm, Kivik and Håga in the Bronze Age and Old Uppsala, Rakne and Oseberg in the Iron Age.
