Its existence and popularity are a global phenomenon, interesting not only for sociologists of religion but for politicians, philosophers and people of faith. The impact of this movement and the two-way social change remain a rare subject of study and this paper aims to fill the gaps and to discuss contemporary situation in regards to its followers.

This has become an important question in political philosophy over the past forty years, as these groups have demanded greater autonomy from the state, while treating their members in ways that are incompatible with liberal commitments to equal protection and individual autonomy. This issue is sometimes referred to as the problem of internal minorities. Virtually all of the approaches to the problem of internal minorities rely, either directly or indirectly, on the liberal principle of legitimacy.

  • Tcrno5-Race-Manual-Issue-2.Pdf
#TCRNo5 Race Manual Issue 2: Update for 2017 Racers Introduction Welcome to issue 1 of the race manual for TCRNo5. This is Issue 1 of the race manual for the fifth edition of the PEdAL ED Transcontinental Race. It contains updates to Issue 0 including detailed information on control locations and parcours, some information on prohibited roads and how this year’s general classification ranking will be judged. You will notice there are a few differences between TCRNo5 and previous editions of the race, like new rules on media and the following (or not) of riders with video crews. There has also been some evolution and restructuring of the general classification system in order to distinguish true solo and pairs efforts, and allow more latitude for this to be an adventure. It is a fine balancing act and one that Mike thought about carefully having learnt from previous editions of the race. Accordingly, TCRNo5 race finishers will be split into two categories; 'category finish' riders will get a race time and a race position. 'Completion' riders will receive their race time only. ‘Category finish' riders must prove they meet the conditions for qualification. There is more detail in the rules section in this manual and there will be a more thorough explanation of the rationale on the race blog soon. As the last few years have shown, throughout the year the cultural, economic and political conditions may change. TCR does not believe in making drastic changes to the race structure in response to fears when clear information is absent. If anything, we believe that adventure is about learning and experiencing all situations first hand whether they are attractive or not.

  • The Transcontinental Cycle Race Ian Walker
The Transcontinental Cycle Race Ian Walker The Transcontinental Cycle Race captured my imagination and wouldn’t let go. One way to describe the Transcontinental Race is to quote its founder, Mike Hall: “At the sharp end it is a beautifully hard bicycle race, simple in design but complex in execution. Factors of self reliance, logistics, navigation and judgement burden racers’ minds as well as their physiques. The strongest excel and redefine what we think possible, while many experienced riders target only a finish.” Those are words to manage your expectations about how easy something is going to be. More specifically, the Transcontinental sees several hundred riders gather at a point in Europe – Geraardsbergen in Belgium, in the year I did it – and ride to a distant point on the other side of the continent as quickly as possible. In 2017, the fifth time the race had run, our goal was Meteora in Greece ‒ a distance of just under 4000 kilometres for most people. If I sound vague about the length of the event, it is because riders in the Transcontinental are free to choose almost any route they please, as long as they hit four mountain-top checkpoints along the way. This makes the race so much more than just a simple test of who is the strongest. The rider with the best legs won’t win unless they are also good at route planning. Each person has to make their own decision about how comfortable they feel taking quicker, busier roads or sticking to safer, but slower, back lanes.

  • Children of God / the Family International
Children of God / The Family International Author: Eileen Barker Author: Sarah Harvey, Inform Published: 15th January 2021 Eileen Barker. 2021. "Children of God / The Family International." In James Crossley and Alastair Lockhart (eds.) Critical Dictionary of Apocalyptic and Millenarian Movements. 15 January 2021. Retrieved from www.cdamm.org/articles/children-of-god. Introduction The Children of God (CoG), later known as The Family International (TFI), was an evangelical organization founded in the late 1960s in California by David Brandt Berg (1919–94). It had a focus on missionary activity and reaching out to others for Christ, largely through street witnessing and its own music and literature. Following the example of the early Christians, members lived communally and held all things in common, ‘forsaking all’, while working full time for the movement in missionary and humanitarian projects (Luke 14:33). A strong us-vs-them dichotomy, combined with Endtime beliefs, characterized the outside world (referred to as ‘the system’ by the CoG) as evil (James 4:4). The movement was largely based on two key beliefs (covered in greater depth below): a belief in the imminence of the Endtime and a belief that the ‘Law of Love’ superseded all other Christian teachings. The movement has undergone numerous changes over its fifty-year history, moving from a tight-knit, world-rejecting movement focused around the charismatic figure of Berg to one with differing levels of membership in the 1990s then on to a ‘Reboot’ in 2010, which effectively dissolved most of the movement’s key practices, and more recently to a mostly virtual, online network of around 1,600 members by 2020.
