  • The Legacy of Unification Political Theology
The Legacy of Unification Political Theology Dan Fefferman August 28, 2017 "Political theology" investigates the ways in which theological concepts relate to politics, society and economics. In this article, I examine the ways in which the expression of the political theology of the Unification Movement has evolved since its early days, especially in the U.S. From its beginning, Unificationism has had to deal with tensions between its vision of One World Under God and its commitment to ridding the world of threats to that vision, especially that of communism. This tension led to various alliances in the political world that have impacted the Unificationist community significantly and remain unresolved today. Victory Over Communism From the 1960s through early 1980s, the expression of Unification political theology in the public realm was largely focused on "Victory Over Communism." The movement's commitment to world unity transcending race and nationality was prominent in its spiritual and evangelical work, but took a back seat to VOC in terms of activism. Dan Fefferman Divine Principle (DP) itself provides the rationale for giving priority to VOC: "The Third World War is the final conflict in the providence of restoration. Through this war, God intends that the democratic world bring the communist world to submission and build the ideal world… [W]hether the Third World War is waged by force of arms or as an ideological conflict depends upon the responsibility of the people…serving the providence of God…. [I]t is inescapable that this worldwide conflict take place." Reflecting this imperative, Rev. Sun Myung Moon founded the International Federation for Victory Over Communism in 1969 as a major ideological offensive.

  • Psychotherapy Can Be a Sham, Unless
Psychotherapy can be a sham, unless ............. Courtenay Young ___________________________________________ Abstract: An in-depth look at the definition and essence of psychotherapy in an attempt to clarify exactly what psychotherapy is and how best psychotherapists can react to outside pressures and criticisms. ________________________________________________ Psychotherapy is under attack! And we, as psychotherapists, are not responding appropriately. In one country (France) there was such hysteria as to whether psychotherapy is being used in order to promote sects or cults that they passed a new law in order to try to prevent this. There have now been intensive, and we hope successful, negotiations with the French ministries to exclude properly organised psychotherapy from such legal constraints. There was a similar impulse several years ago that promopted a private member’s Bill on psychotherapy in the UK Parliament to try to stop the growth of the Scientology movement, as it was feared that they were calling what they did “psychotherapy”, and thus psychotherapy had to be regulated to prevent this. In another country (Spain), anyone who inadventently calls themselves a psychologist or correctly calls themself a psychotherapist is seen as some sort of untrained sham or con-artist and such a danger to the public that they can be (and have been) arrested. This type of paranoia, partially generated by other professionals trying to hold onto or increase their slice of the psychotherapy cake, is so great that the practice of psychotherapy is trying to be limited to something that can only be undertaken by (so called) professionals in other disciplines - doctors and psychologists - to ensure that it is being done properly.

Unification Church of the United States From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia The Unification Church of the United States is a new religious movement in the United States of America. It began in the 1950s and 1960s when missionaries from Japan and South Korea were sent to the United States by the international Unification Church's founder and leader Sun Myung Moon. It expanded in the 1970s and then became involved in controversy due to its theology, its political activism, and the life style of its members. Since then it has been involved in many areas of American society and has itself gone through substantial changes. Among them were Young Oon Kim, Sang Ik-Choi, Bo Hi Pak, David S. C. Kim, and Yun Soo Lim. Missionary work took place in Washington D.C., New York, Oregon, and California.[1] The church first came to public notice in the United States after sociology student John Lofland studied Young Oon Kim's group and published his findings as a doctoral thesis entitled: The World Savers: A Field Study of Cult Processes , which was published in 1966 in book form by Prentice-Hall as Doomsday Cult: A Study of Conversion, Proselytization, and Maintenance of Faith.

The use of this term has become so emotionally charged that scholars find it difficult to discuss its merits and scientific utility with calmness and objectivity. I devote Part One of this article to an examination of the cultural and structural sources of an extreme polarization that has occurred among scholars of new religious movements.

  • Cults and Families
REVIEW ARTICLES Cults and Families Doni Whitsett & Stephen A. Kent Abstract This article provides an overview of cult-related issues that may reveal themselves in therapeutic situations. These issues include: families in cults; parental (especially mothers’) roles in cults; the impact that cult leaders have on families; the destruction of family intimacy; child abuse; issues encountered by noncustodial parents; the impact on cognitive, psychological, and moral development; and health issues. The authors borrow from numerous the- oretical perspectives to illustrate their points, including self psychology, developmental theory, and the sociology of religion. They conclude with a discussion of the therapeutic challenges that therapists face when working with cult-involved clients and make preliminary recommendations for treatment.
