Welcome to the 2019 Hugo Awards Ceremony Tonight, we honour the world of Science Fiction and Fantasy in art, literature, music and drama. As your hosts for the evening, it’s our intention to deliver an Awards Ceremony full of heart, passion for our genre and (quite possibly) a few surprises. All with a hint of Irish heather. The Hugos are special because they are nominated and selected by fans. All of tonight’s finalists have spent months (if not years or decades!) honing their respective crafts, and the Hugos are a way for all of us to elevate and recognize that passion and commitment. Writers don’t often get to hear rooms full of applause, so don’t be shy about showing your appreciation for the Finalists. To put it in the original Gaelic, Bhi craic agus ceol againn — or ‘we had fun and music’. We are going to use both tonight, to celebrate our genre, our finalists and each other. On with the show! Afua Richardson Michael Scott Hosts The 77th Worldcon and the 66th Hugo Awards First presented in 1953, and annually presented since 1955, the Hugo awards are the most prestigious award in the science fiction genre. As Ray Bradbury put it, “Anything you dream is fiction, and anything you accomplish is science. [Therefore] the whole history of mankind is nothing but science fiction” and as a result, our awards seek to cover the geographical and artistic diversity of the genre as it stands today. Art, literature, media and fan activities are all celebrated by the Hugos. 2 The Hugo Base Artists Jim Fitzpatrick Born in Dublin, Jim Fitzpatrick worked in advertising until 1972 when he quit to become a full-time artist. Fitzpatrick is known for his gorgeous artwork inspired by Irish myths and Celtic tradition, including The Book of Conquests, for covers of rock albums for artists including Thin Lizzy, for his portrait drawings of Irish writers, and perhaps most of all for his iconic two-tone image of Che Guevara, created in 1968 and copied across walls, posters and t-shirts ever since. Eleanor Wheeler Ms. Wheeler designed and fabricated the 1944 Retro Hugo as well as fabricated the 2019 Hugo Award base from Mr. Fitzpatrick’s designs. She is an architectural and sculptural ceramicist who has created large scale art for public spaces including at the Market Square in Armagh and the Gasworks, the Mater Hospital and Drumglass Park in Belfast. She lives in County Down and has had numerous solo exhibitions, drawing on her travels locally as well as throughout Asia, Africa and Europe for inspiration. Jim's inspiration for the Hugo Base The 2019 Hugo base motif is based on the earliest carvings in Newgrange and the triple spiral from the inside. I traced the original from the side stone myself, years ago. The science fiction aspect is interesting as the triple spiral, for me, represents the triple stars in Orion’s Belt, a source also represented by the three pyramids in Giza - except that Newgrange is over 1,000 years olde 3 Masters of Ceremony Afua Richardson Afua Richardson is an American Comicbook Illustrator best known for her work on the Eisner award-winning mini-series, Black Panther World of Wakanda written by Ta-Nehisi Coates, Roxane Gay, and Yona Harvey.
