MATS FOR THE HOMELESS Thanks to all who attended the last Mats Training session on Thursday, September 5th. There were several new peo- ple and a group of teachers who attended. We are grateful to all of you for your continued interest. We ask that those of you who are cutting and making the balls of yarn, cut the strips 2 1/4 or smaller and pull the strips even when tying them together. Please pull the knots as small as possible. The crocheters have asked that you use all of one kind of bag when making the balls, (all same weight of plastic and the same color). It makes it easier for the crocheters when crocheting to make patterns and to keep the rows even. The different weights of plastic affect the size of the stitch and cause the rows to be uneven. We really appreciate the time involved in making the balls of plastic yarn and ask that you adhere to the above specifications. If you have any questions, please contact the office and I will be happy to meet with you to help in cutting and tying the bags. If you would like to learn more about the project and find out how to cut and tie the bags, there is information on our webpage with instructions and videos at stedna/parishlife/ groups/matsforthehomeless. In the Spring, a training session was held at Transfiguration Parish in Wauconda. It was received with so much enthusi- asm and, to date, Transfiguration has delivered 17 mats to St. Edna to add to the 160 we have completed. It is just amazing how many people have contributed to this special mission. A Big Thanks to all of you! ~Carol Mulvaney

STEWARDSHIP COUNCIL strives to inspire our community to express gratitude for God’s many gifts through service to God and one another. EQUAL BEFORE GOD In today’s Gospel Jesus tries to lead his questioners beyond the letter of the Law, with its many human interpretations, to the spirit in which it was given. The basic law from the beginning, he says, is that all human beings were created equal in the image of God. Thus, a man and woman in marriage have equality and a full- ness that is expressed in their relationship with each other. (In speaking against divorce, Jesus is actually pro- tective of women, who at that time could be divorced by their husbands, but could not obtain a divorce them- selves.) The disciples attempt to keep some children and their parents from disturbing Jesus, probably thinking that women and children were not important enough to disturb the Master! Jesus is indignant at their lack of understanding. For him, the children and their parents have as much right to be with him as anyone else. In fact, he looks at the children gathered around him and says that they are the example that self-important people should imitate. He embraces and blesses them. Young children, in general, accept the rules of life without questioning every little detail. They are open to the love of their parents and trust that rules are imposed for their well-being, even if they do not fully understand them. We are offered the gift of faith by a loving Father. Jesus is asking us to be child-like, not childish, in accepting this gift in simplicity and trust. Learning and dis- cussing issues of faith are fine, but we cannot stop there. Since we do not earn faith—it is feely given to us— we are called to express this faith in how we live our lives. We are equal in God’s sight and equally responsi- ble to live up to our calling.

Prayer Basket: The Prayer Basket is in church and is offered as a part of the offertory at Mass. Intentions are placed in the basket and they are strictly between the person that places them in there and the Lord who receives them. The prayers are then of- fered collectively during the Prayer of the Faithful at Mass.

Announced Prayers at Mass: When people are critically ill, a request form can be filled out in the parish office for prayers to be offered during Mass.

St. Edna Angel Network is back up and running. If you would like to be added to the Angel Network, please email me. Ministers who are on the Angel Network offer prayers for people who are in urgent need of our prayers.

Sick List in the Bulletin: As members of St. Edna’s parish faith community, it is our responsibility to remember both in concrete and spiritual ways those who cannot celebrate Mass with us each week because they are ill. Those who are sick, in turn, remember all of us daily in their prayers and in their sufferings. We experience many blessings because of their remembering us. And so, please remember in your prayers the people listed below:

Angie Alonge Jane Femal Peggy Kriss Charlie Shorthand Rosalie Andrews Dick Freund Joyce Krupa Anna Slaninka Marie Bataska Evelyn Friese William LaPlante Ann Soulge Robert Bassee Barbara Gamble Lorraine Ligammari Amelia Stoesser Pat Baumeister Frank Gallagher Alberto Lucchesi Marty Stoesser Carmelo Bonadonna Celine Kaluza-Gape Shirley Magnus Warren Swegle Geri Boness Joann Garcia Lillian Maloni Loretta Takata William Brill Mary Ann Graham Jerry Mancuso Aileen Tansey Sean Brown Joseph Graziano Bill Masloske Barbara Tansor John Clancy Nina Hammar Pat Mason Harriet Tantillo Robert Clark Robert Hawkins, Jr. Jim McEnerney Doug Tesnow Sandra Clark Baby Jude Hearn Geraldine Mick Jim Trausch Richard Continelli Father Phil Hensler Barbara Miller Christopher Trinco Tony Conway Loretta Herrmann Bonnie Miresso Steven Trinco Joe Coriaci Walter Herrmann Asha Molve Dan Tsutsumi Ken Cybul Raymond Hohman Kathy Morrow Doreen Von Bargen Joyce Dawidczyk Roy Hoppe Krista Motley Marlene Wielgos Nicholas Desario Fr. May the God of compassion hold us in the palm of his hand when we feel weary and alone in our suffering. May ours be the look of compassion and the touch of comfort to those who reach out to us in their time of need. And may the blessing of compassion be with us all. P. Normile (mod)
