  • Front Men for Prog-Rock Supergroups Styx and Supertramp Bemoan Harsh Industry
Front men for prog-rock supergroups Styx and Supertramp bemoan harsh industry Thu Aug 3, 5:48 PM Roger Hodgson, right, and Dennis DeYoung look at old photographs of themselves on the set... By Cassandra Szklarski TORONTO (CP) - Today's music industry has become less human and much harsher on budding artists in recent decades, the front men for prog-rock supergroups Styx and Supertramp said Thursday as they spent the day mentoring the kids from Canadian Idol. "Young artists of today are burdened with the sad responsibility of having to be successful immediately," Styx singer Dennis DeYoung said before heading into a rehearsal studio with Roger Hodgson and the seven remaining hopefuls. "They don't have as much opportunity to grow as artists as I believe people like Roger and I did from our generation and that's a shame. I got better as I got older and, had I not been afforded the opportunity to do that, a lot of those songs never would have been written." The Chicago native said he and Hodgson hoped to impart a few words of wisdom to the young hopefuls, who range in age from 16 to 28 and already find themselves in an intense world of public scrutiny and media spotlight. The show itself has come under scorn from some members of the Canadian indie music scene, who questioned earlier this year whether the contestants are adequately prepared for the cutthroat industry. Hodgson complained of an industry that pressures artists to strive for mass appeal, in effect creating an environment that seems more focused on payback and sales, rather than artistry.

  • Roots Report: Polly Want Some Music
Roots Report: Polly Want Some Music Okee dokee folks … Today I was running an errand and saw a heartbreaking sign stapled to a telephone pole. It was a notice for a lost parrot named Bella. You never think about a parrot getting lost — it’s usually cats and dogs. I always hope that these animals are reunited with their human companions. A lost dog or cat sometimes finds its way to the pound and if it has proper identification, eventually home. It can be confusing to figure out what to do with parrots and other feathered friends that are lost or abandoned. In my opinion and in the opinion of most animal lovers, birds and exotic animals should NOT be kept as pets. Most people don’t realize that parrots can outlive their owners. Parrots, as well as other birds, were meant to fly and be free. A life in a cage is not much of a life. Anyway, here I am on a rant again and trying to tie it in to my music column. Guess what? I can! Ironically, just before I saw the lost parrot flyer I was given a handbill for a fundraiser to support a parrot/wildlife sanctuary. My friends Dorian and Tracy, who gave me the flyer, volunteer there one day a week. The sanctuary is Foster Parrots, Ltd & The New England Wildlife Sanctuary and they care for a population of over 450 exotic bird and animal refugees. They will have their Fall Fundraiser Extravaganza on Saturday, September 19 in Hope Valley. Now this is the part where I tie it in to music.

The first verse, quoted above (video at https://youtu.be/e5MAg_yWsq8), aptly captures the emotional excitement as well as the trepidation that I felt when in January 2016 we launched JCI Insight into uncharted waters. I, along with a small group of ASCI staff, conceived the idea of starting a new ASCI journal in 2014, two years into my tenure as JCI Editor. While the concept of a “daughter” journal was not new in scientific publishing, it was a radical idea for the ASCI, whose membership comprises individuals spanning a wide spectrum of academic life — from young, newly elected members on a steep trajectory of scientific achievement to Senior and Emeritus members, many of whom have been elected to the National Academies of Medicine and Sciences and some of whom are Nobel laureates. As one might imagine with such a […] Find the latest version: https://jci.me/131371/pdf EDITORIAL Come sail away I’m sailing away, set an open course for the virgin sea ’Cause I’ve got to be free, free to face the life that’s ahead of me On board I’m the captain, so climb aboard We’ll search for tomorrow on every shore And I’ll try, oh Lord, I’ll try to carry on “Come Sail Away,” a song by Dennis De Young of the rock group Styx, uses sailing as a metaphor for achieving one’s dreams by embarking on a journey into the unknown.

  • “Come Sail Away,” “Mr. Roboto,” “Babe,” “Too Much Time on My Hands” and More
1 THE BEST OF STYX FEATURES MAJOR HITS “COME SAIL AWAY,” “MR. ROBOTO,” “BABE,” “TOO MUCH TIME ON MY HANDS” AND MORE With Isaac Hayes singing “Come Sail Away” on TV’s “South Park,” “Mr. Roboto” revived for a car commercial, new albums and constant touring, Styx, one of the most popular bands of the late ‘70s and early ‘80s, is hardly sailing away. The Best Of Styx edition of 20th Century Masters/The Millennium Collection (A&M/UME), released June 11, 2002, offers 11 of the band’s biggest hits and best-loved tracks spanning its A&M tenure from 1975 to 1990. Produced in association with Styx, each selection has been digitally remastered. Dennis DeYoung (keyboards) and brothers Chuck and John Panozzo (drums and bass, respectively) had played together on Chicago’s South Side since grade school. Adding guitarists John Curulewski and James “JY” Young, Styx debuted in 1972 but its first four albums yielded only the Top 10 “Lady” (though Styx II would eventually go gold). When the band signed to A&M, Tommy Shaw replaced Curulewski after Equinox was recorded and “Lorelei” from the gold Equinox (1975) and “Mademoiselle” from the gold Crystal Ball (1976) went Top 40. 1977’s The Grand Illusion turned Styx into an arena rock superstar. The triple platinum album spun off the Top 10 “Come Sail Away” and Top 40 “Fooling Yourself (The Angry Young Man).” Styx followed with the triple platinum Pieces Of Eight (1978) and its Top 40 “Blue Collar Man (Long Nights).” 1979’s Cornerstone went double platinum featuring the gold #1 “Babe,” and “Boat On The River.” Styx’s concept album masterpiece, the triple platinum Paradise Theatre (1981), hit with the Top 10s “Too Much Time On My Hands” and “The Best Of Times.” After 1983’s rock opera 2 Kilroy Was Here, despite going platinum and boasting the #3 gold “Mr.

I bought this because my old Styx song books had been stolen many years back. Those old editions are long out of print and very difficult to obtain now.I was excited when I saw this book on here because it had all the greatest hits back in piano form. I first looked at Dont Let It End. They dumbed it down by transposing it from D flat to C, to make it more playable. Then I took a look at Babe. They left it in the same key, but they changed the notes to play closer to an easy piano version of the song.
