Dr. Banerjee received Ph.D. from the University of Waterloo and M.Ed. from Queen’s University, both in Canada. He has worked in industries and taught at the universities in Germany, Canada, USA and Latin America. He has over hundred publications in refereed journals and conference proceedings and a few books to his credit. Jayanta was Vice President of the Rotary Club of Mayaguez,¨ Puerto Rico, and is a Paul Harris Fellow of Rotary International. A few years ago he was honored as an ”Adopted Son” of the city of Mayaguez.¨ c American Society for Engineering Education, 2021 2021 ASEE Annual Conference and Exposition Mastery Learning for the Undergraduates in Engineering Jayanta Banerjee, ASEE Life Member Mechanical Engineering Department University of Puerto Rico at Mayagüez (UPRM) Abstract The paper gives examples on the importance of mastery learning, that is learning a profession to its perfection and even extending it to excellence, in engineering education and in engineering training, such as the CO-OPs, especially during the undergraduate years. In order to achieve it, only academic counselling is not enough; it needs a more intimate ‘mentoring’ for both incoming Freshmen and outgoing Senior undergraduates. During the present crisis of COVID-19 and in the post-COVID-19 scenario thereafter in engineering education, when online instructions are rapidly replacing in-presence lectures at the undergraduate level, mastery learning is even more important in order to avoid professional limitations, and in the long run of lifelong learning, professional obsolescence.

The Dandaka Forest hile Bharatha was spending his days at Nandigrama in constant contemplation of Rama, far away in the Wforest, on Chitrakuta Peak, Sita, Rama, and Lakshmana were praising his devotion and sense of dedica- tion. They were happy in the peaceful, quiet forest home. The fool Jayanta One day, a fool named Jayanta sought to measure Rama’s valour, an adventure as foolish and suicidal as the attempt of an ant to discover the depth of the ocean! Prompted by sheer mischief, he transformed himself into a crow and, approaching Sita, who was seated by Rama’s side, lost in the contemplation of the scenery spread out before them, pecked at the sole of her tender foot with his sharp beak, causing blood to trickle from the wound. Seeing the blood, Rama plucked a blade of dry grass from the ground and threw it at the crow. Rama would never hurt anyone who had not done any injury. But when it is necessary, and when it has to be done, even Rahu will swallow the Moon, right? So too, Rama. He would never hurt the innocent. But that blade of grass became a huge flame of fire and flew toward Jayanta. And when he fled, it pursued him relentlessly wherever he went. Helpless and frightened, the crow returned to its original form, and Jayanta fell at Rama’s feet praying for succour. Indra learned that the culprit was his own son, and he too repented for his son’s audacity and irreverence. Jayanta prostrated before Rama, pleading for mercy.

The term magical realism is to accept magical elements as a usual component in day-to- day life. It shows the alternatives to reality or hyper-reality of life. Most of Ramayana and Mahabharata's magical incidents happen through the heroes and their weapons; the common weapon in the two epics is the spear, bows, Gada, sword, axe, etc. When the weapons are pronounced in the tone of magical realism, the power of these weapons takes a mighty dimension. With such weapons, most of the magical incidents take place in those two great epics. Hanuman, the Zoomorphic character and Bhima, the superhuman, of Mahabharata play a vital part in the two great epics. The results show that there is no universal law nor any rule of thumb for mentoring. Size of the school, human resources, such as the mentee/mentor ratio, total years of the undergraduate program and the local culture are some of the factors that govern the effectiveness of mentoring.
