ABSTRACT Following twenty-five years of civil war between the Sri Lankan government troops and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), a ceasefire was called in February 2002. This truce is now on the point of collapse, due to a break down in talks over the post-war administration of the northern and eastern provinces. These instabilities have lead to conflicts within the insurgent ranks as well as political and religious factions in the south. This thesis centres on how the anguish of war and its unresolved aftermath is being communicated among Tamils living in the northern reaches of Sri Lanka. -

Mahabharatha Tatparya Nirnaya Chapter XIX The episodes of Lakshagriha, Bhimasena's marriage with Hidimba, Killing Bakasura, Draupadi svayamwara, Pandavas settling down in Indraprastha are described in this chapter. The details of these episodes are well-known. Therefore the special points of religious and moral conduct highlights in Tatparya Nirnaya and its commentaries will be briefly stated here. Kanika's wrong advice to Duryodhana This chapter starts with instructions of Kanika an expert in the evil policies of politics to Duryodhana. This Kanika was also known as Kalinga. Probably he hailed from Kalinga region. He was a person if Bharadvaja gotra and an adviser to Shatrujna the king of Sauvira. He told Duryodhana that when the close relatives like brothers, parents, teachers, and friends are our enemies, we should talk sweet outwardly and plan for destroying them. Heretics, robbers, theives and poor persons should be employed to kill them by poison. Outwardly we should pretend to be religiously.Rituals, sacrifices etc should be performed. Taking people into confidence by these means we should hit our enemy when the time is ripe. In this way Kanika secretly advised Duryodhana to plan against Pandavas. Duryodhana approached his father Dhritarashtra and appealed to him to send out Pandavas to some other place. Initially Dhritarashtra said Pandavas are also my sons, they are well behaved, brave, they will add to the wealth and the reputation of our kingdom, and therefore, it is not proper to send them out. However, Duryodhana insisted that they should be sent out. He said he has mastered one hundred and thirty powerful hymns that will protect him from the enemies. -

THE CHRONOLOGY OF THE TATTVÓRTHA SÚTRA 1 JOHANNES BRONKHORST ON THE CHRONOLOGY OF THE TATTVÓRTHA SÚTRA AND SOME EARLY COMMENTARIES* (published in: Wiener Zeitschrift für die Kunde Südasiens 29 (1985), pp. 155-184) I. Siddhasena Gaˆi’s È¥kå 1. Of the commentaries to be studied this is by far the most recent one. It comments on the Tattvårtha SËtra and the Tattvårthådhigama Bhå∑ya, and therefore postdates both. More helpful information for determining its date consists in the mention of Dharmak¥rti and his Pramåˆavinißcaya in the commentary on TS 5.31 (I, p. 397). Dharmak¥rti lived in the seventh century at the latest (about 600-660 A.D. according to Frauwallner 1961: 137f.; Lindtner 1980 argues for ca. 530-600). Siddhasena Gaˆi lived after this. He appears to be referred to under the name ‘Gandhahastin’ in Í¥lå∫ka’s commentary on the Ócårå∫ga SËtra (p. 1 and 55 [82]), because ‘Gandhahastin’ is used as a name of Siddhasena Gaˆi in several works (Sukhlal 1974: Intr. p. 55 f.). Í¥lå∫ka wrote in the middle of the 9th century or soon after that (Kapadia 1941: 197). Siddhasena Gaˆi wrote before this. A further specification of Siddhasena Gaˆi’s date is possible, as follows. The Tattvårthådhigama Bhå∑ya on sËtra 9.22 explains the word pråyaßcitta ‘atonement’ and makes in that connection the following observation (II, p. 254): cit¥ sañjñånavißuddhyo˙ dhåtu˙ | tasya cittam iti bhavati ni∑†håntam auˆådikaµ ca | “The root is ‘citÁ in [the senses] “ideation” and “purification”’. Citta is its [derivative], ending in the suffix of the past participle (viz., -ta) and belonging to the words derived with an Uˆådi suffix”. -

Arupadai Veedu Arupadai Veedu - The Six Abodes of Lord Muruga The Lord is known by different names such as Karthikeya, Skanda, Vadivela and Muruga at various temples. These six temples are situated in Tamil Nadu. These most sacred abodes of Lord Muruga is mentioned in Tamil divine literature, "Thirumurugatrupadai", written by Poet Nakkeerar and in "Thirupugal", written by Saint-poet Arunagirinathar. The six abodes are: Thirupparankunram Thiruchendur Palani Swamimalai Thiruthani and Pazhamudircholai. �� Om Saravanabhavaya namaha�� Arupadai Veedu - 1 of 6 Tirupparankundram is a hill at 8kms southwest of Madurai, Tamilnadu. A cave temple mentioned in various classical Tamil texts as the 'Southern Himalaya' where the gods assemble, Tirupparankunram is also mentioned in legend as 'the place where the sun and moon abide'. Long ago the two daughters of Lord Vishnu, Amrita Valli and Sundara Valli, cherished the desire of becoming the consorts of Lord Subrahmanya. With this aim in mind they both went to Saravana Poigai (pool in Himalayas) and commenced austere penance to fulfil their desires. Pleased with their prayer and worship, Lord Subrahmanya appeared before them and told Amrita Valli, "You will be brought up by Indra as his daughter and I shall marry you in due course." Her younger sister Sundara Valli was also graced with a similar blessing. She was born to sage Sivamuni and brought up by Nambi, the headman of Veddas. Contd..2 -2- Amrita Valli took the form of a female child and went to Mount Meru where Indra's Airavatam - white elephant, took care of her. Hence she came to be known as Devayanai, one who was brought up by the heavenly elephant of Indra (yana in Tamil means elephant). -

He is the commander-in-chief of the Murugan army of the devas (gods) and the son of Shiva and Parvati. Subramaniyan God of war and victory, Murugan is often referred to as "Tamil Kadavul" (meaning "God of Tamils") and is worshiped primarily in areas with Commander of the Gods Tamil influences, especially South India, Sri Lanka, Mauritius, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore and Reunion Island. His six most important shrines in India are the Arupadaiveedu temples, located in Tamil Nadu. In Sri Lanka, Hindus as well as Buddhists revere the sacred historical Nallur Kandaswamy temple in Jaffna and Katirk āmam Temple situated deep south. [1] Hindus in Malaysia also pray to Lord Murugan at the Batu Caves and various temples where Thaipusam is celebrated with grandeur. In Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh, Kartikeya is known as Subrahmanya with a temple at Kukke Subramanya known for Sarpa shanti rites dedicated to Him and another famous temple at Ghati Subramanya also in Karnataka.
