It had outstanding maneuverability, and an excellent rate of climb. Initially, the Nieuport 17 retained the above wing mounted Lewis gun of the "11", but in French service this was soon replaced by a synchronized Vickers gun. In the Royal Flying Corps, the wing mounted Lewis was usually retained, by now on the improved Foster mounting, a curved metal rail which allowed the pilot to bring the gun down in order to change drums or clear jams. A few individual aircraft were fitted with both guns - but in practice this reduced performance unacceptably, and a single machine gun remained standard. The type reached the French front in March 1916, and quickly began to replace the smaller Nieuport 11 and 16 in French service. The type went into service with Escadrille N.57 on May 2, 1916. With the British DH.2 the Nieuports were responsible for ending the reign of the Fokker Eindecker - the so-called 'Fokker scourge' period, proving a severe shock to German aviation high command. -

The Birth of Airpower, 1916 359 the character of the German offensive became clear, and losses reached staggering levels, Joffre urgently demanded as early a start as possible to the allied offensive. In May he and Haig agreed to mount an assault on I July 'athwart the Somme.' Long before the starting date of the offensive had been fixed the British had been preparing for it by building up, behind their lines, the communications and logistical support the 'big push' demanded. Masses of materiel were accumulated close to the trenches, including nearly three million rounds of artillery ammuni tion. War on this scale was a major industrial undertaking.• Military aviation, of necessity, made a proportionate leap as well. The RFC had to expand to meet the demands of the new mass armies, and during the first six months of 1916 Trenchard, with Haig's strong support, strove to create an air weapon that could meet the challenge of the offensive. Beginning in January the RFC had been reorganized into brigades, one to each army, a process completed on 1 April when IV Brigade was formed to support the Fourth Army. Each brigade consisted of a headquarters, an aircraft park, a balloon wing, an army wing of two to four squadrons, and a corps wing of three to five squadrons (one squadron for each corps). At RFC Headquarters there was an additional wing to provide reconnais sance for GHQ, and, as time went on, to carry out additional fighting and bombing duties.3 Artillery observation was now the chief function of the RFC , with subsidiary efforts concentrated on close reconnaissance and photography. -

Just about every facet of the campaign has been analyzed and reexamined. However, one area of the battle that has been little explored is the second battle which took place simultaneously to the one on the ground. This second battle occurred in the skies above the Somme, where for the first time in the history of warfare a deliberate air campaign was planned and executed to support ground operations. The British Royal Flying Corps (RFC) was tasked with achieving air superiority over the Somme sector before the British Fourth Army attacked to start the ground offensive. -
The Aircraft Flown by 24 Squadron
The Aircraft Flown by 24 Squadron 24 Squadron RAF is currently the Operational Training Squadron for the Lockheed C130J Hercules, based at RAF Brize Norton in Oxfordshire. Apart from a short period as a cadre in 1919, they have been continuously operating for the RFC & RAF since 1915. They started off as a Scout (Fighter) Squadron, developed into a ground attack unit, became a communications specialist with a subsidiary training role, and in 1940 became a transport squadron. I have discovered records of 100 different types being allocated or used by the Squadron, some were trial aircraft used for a few days and others served for several years, and in the case of the Lockheed Hercules decades! In addition many different marks of the same type were operated, these include; 5 Marks of the Avro 504 1 civil and 4 Military marks of the Douglas DC3/ Dakota All 7 marks of the Lockheed Hudson used by the RAF 4 marks of the Lockheed Hercules 5 marks of the Bristol F2B fighter 3 Marks of the Vickers Wellington XXIV Squadron has operated aircraft designed by 39 separate concerns, built in Britain, Belgium, France, Germany, Holland, and the USA. The largest numbers from one maker/ designer are the Airco and De Havilland DH series totalling 22 types or marks, followed by 12 types or marks from Lockheed, and 11 from Avro. The total number of aircraft operated if split down into different marks comes to 137no from the Airspeed “Envoy” to the Wicko “Warferry” Earliest Days 24 Squadron was formed at Hounslow as an offshoot of 17 Squadron on the 1st September 1915 initially under the command of Capt A G Moore. -

The Branch held its Annual General Meeting at the Hotel De Ville, Mailly-Maillet in the afternoon followed in the evening with members and friends of the Branch meeting up for an enjoyable social evening at “Le Poppy” in La Boiselle. We were joined once again by our friends the Band of the Hampshire Constabulary who after dinner provided the musical accompaniment to our now traditional sing a long. November 11th – Armistice Day Services. Our annual Armistice Day service of remembrance was held at the Thiepval Memorial. This year was not as wet and windy as previous years but unfortunately it was very foggy and this meant that a planned flypast and poppy drop at 11 o’clock by a replica World War One DH2 Biplane did not go ahead. The band of the Hampshire Constabulary provided the music, the Branch Standard was carried by John Mathison and I carried the Union Standard. Following on from the RBL service we all formed up and followed the band down to the Thiepval village church for the French service and reception. In the afternoon the band and Branch Standard, this time carried by myself paraded at the Mailly-Maillet village war memorial. Fighter Aircraft
Fighter aircraft An A-10 Thunderbolt II, F-86 Sabre, P-38 Lightning and P-51 Mustang fly in formation during an air show at Langley Air Force Base, Virginia. The formation displays two generations of Air Force fighter aircraft, and an attack aircraft (the A-10). A fighter aircraft is a military aircraft designed primarily for attacking other aircraft, as opposed to a bomber, which is designed to attack ground targets, primarily by dropping bombs. Fighters are comparatively small, fast, and maneuverable. Fighter aircraft are the primary means by which armed forces gain air superiority. At least since World War II, air superiority has been a crucial component of victory in most modern warfare, particularly "conventional" warfare between regular armies, and their acquisition and maintenance represent a very substantial proportion of military budgets in militaries that maintain modern fighter forces. Introduction The word “fighter” did not become the official British term for a single seat fighter until after the First World War. In the RFC/RAF such aircraft continued to be called “scouts”. The French and Germans both used (and still use) terms that literally mean “hunter”. The Americans, perhaps originally due to a mistranslation of the French word “chasseur” called their fighters “pursuit” aircraft until after the Second World War. By whatever name they are known, fighters were developed in response to the fledgling use of aircraft and dirigibles in World War I for reconnaissance and ground attack roles. As aerial warfare became increasingly important, so did control of the airspace. By World War II, fighters were predominantly all-metal monoplanes with wing-mounted or propeller-mounted cannons.
