It had outstanding maneuverability, and an excellent rate of climb. Initially, the Nieuport 17 retained the above wing mounted Lewis gun of the "11", but in French service this was soon replaced by a synchronized Vickers gun. In the Royal Flying Corps, the wing mounted Lewis was usually retained, by now on the improved Foster mounting, a curved metal rail which allowed the pilot to bring the gun down in order to change drums or clear jams. A few individual aircraft were fitted with both guns - but in practice this reduced performance unacceptably, and a single machine gun remained standard. The type reached the French front in March 1916, and quickly began to replace the smaller Nieuport 11 and 16 in French service. The type went into service with Escadrille N.57 on May 2, 1916. With the British DH.2 the Nieuports were responsible for ending the reign of the Fokker Eindecker - the so-called 'Fokker scourge' period, proving a severe shock to German aviation high command. -

It shows that he was a newly trained fighter pilot shot down by a highly skilled and battle hardened German Ace flying a vastly superior aircraft. It concludes, sadly, that Douglas‟ life was defined by his wasteful albeit courageous death. Background Douglas was the third child of Henry „Harry‟ and Lily Macpherson (neé Hallewell) of Headingly Hall, Leeds. He was named Henry after his father who was widely known as „Harry‟. To avoid confusion, the child was henceforth known by his second name. Douglas was a second generation Englishman. His grandfather Alexander Sinclair Macpherson (b. 8 December 1834, Aberdeen, d. 30 December 1902, West Riding Yorkshire) was the second son of William McPherson (a flaxdresser b. 17 October 1802 in Portsoy, Banff, d. 10 June 1866 in Leslie, Fifeshire) and Catherine Alexander Sinclair (b. 1801 d. abt. 1855 in Leslie, Fifeshire). William was in turn the son of William McPherson (a flesher) and Elspet Duff, both of Porstoy, Banffshire. Douglas‟ older siblings were Alfred Sinclair Macpherson (b. 20 April 1895 d. 20 February 1968) and Herbert „Bertie‟ Alexander Macpherson (b. 4 August 1896 d. 5 June 1976). He had five younger siblings; William Stuart „Bob‟ Macpherson (b. 30 September 1901 d. 7 July 1978), Eric Gordon Macpherson (b.1 June 1907 d. -
Fighter Aircraft
Fighter aircraft An A-10 Thunderbolt II, F-86 Sabre, P-38 Lightning and P-51 Mustang fly in formation during an air show at Langley Air Force Base, Virginia. The formation displays two generations of Air Force fighter aircraft, and an attack aircraft (the A-10). A fighter aircraft is a military aircraft designed primarily for attacking other aircraft, as opposed to a bomber, which is designed to attack ground targets, primarily by dropping bombs. Fighters are comparatively small, fast, and maneuverable. Fighter aircraft are the primary means by which armed forces gain air superiority. At least since World War II, air superiority has been a crucial component of victory in most modern warfare, particularly "conventional" warfare between regular armies, and their acquisition and maintenance represent a very substantial proportion of military budgets in militaries that maintain modern fighter forces. Introduction The word “fighter” did not become the official British term for a single seat fighter until after the First World War. In the RFC/RAF such aircraft continued to be called “scouts”. The French and Germans both used (and still use) terms that literally mean “hunter”. The Americans, perhaps originally due to a mistranslation of the French word “chasseur” called their fighters “pursuit” aircraft until after the Second World War. By whatever name they are known, fighters were developed in response to the fledgling use of aircraft and dirigibles in World War I for reconnaissance and ground attack roles. As aerial warfare became increasingly important, so did control of the airspace. By World War II, fighters were predominantly all-metal monoplanes with wing-mounted or propeller-mounted cannons. -

Aircraft in Colour the First World War, and Hence Tbe BOMBERS Bomber May Claim to Ante-Date the Fighter Aeroplane As a Weapon of War
Bombs were dropped from an aeroplane at least as early as November 1911, nearly three years before the outbreak of The Pocket Encyclopaedia of World Aircraft in Colour the First World War, and hence tbe BOMBERS bomber may claim to ante-date the fighter aeroplane as a weapon of war. At PATROL AND ll!CONNADSANCZ AlllCR..UT any rate, while there were no crue 19 1~-1919 fighters in existence in August 1914, there were bombers - from the frail Voisins of France to the giant four engined Russian llya Mouromeu. The ensuing four years of war provided a testing-ground for such outstanding and varied bomber designs as the Gotha Grossflugzeuge, the Breguet 14 and the Handley Page 0 /400. In addition, throughout the war the evolution of reconnaissance aircraft progressed to the extent that, to succeed the frail, defenceless Taube and Albatros machines of 1914, armed 2-scaters were evolved that in 1918 could out-fly and out-climb some of the ablest fighters in service.• The 67 aircraft in this volume reflect the development of such aircraft throughout the first truly formative period in mili tary aviation history. The period 1914- 19 is selected so as to include cenain important types designed during the war, but which arrived too late for combat service. First published in 1968, this new edition of a now firmly established favourite amongst aircraft enthusiastS contains some necessary texrual corrections and clarification as well as amendments to minor illustration detail in cwo of the colour plates. Four types of aircraft which were not in the earlier edition have been added; to make room for these, a number of flying-boats and floatplancs have been transferred to the companion volume Flying Boats and Seaplanes Since 1910.
