A good story spoilt by the author's adoration of his brother.By Robin Hood Forest of DeanA good story spoilt by the author's adoration of his brother.I found myself skipping over paragraphs trying to find the story of a pioneer of aerial combat. Undoubtedly, he was a hero, but the constant hero worship was way over the top.1 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Great bookBy PlaneWayneTyrrel Hawker writes with great feeling and insight about the life, career and loss of his brother Lanoe, who was by all accounts an amazing individual. Interesting to read how Lanoe managed to run an effective fighter squadron though burdened with the DeHavilland DH2, aka the Spinning Incinerator. But most of all an indictment of the waste and tragedy of war.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. The first great ace for Britain in WW1- Lanoe Hawker VC.By Paul DaviesHawker VC is a very atmospheric book which takes the reader into the cockpit with Hawker, into his Royal Flying Corps officer`s quarters, his private family life and into the combats that made him a legendary hero to the modern RAF. Written by his brother, it opens up the story of the real man and not just the myths that arise from other accounts of this WW1 fighter ace, the first of any note for Britain in WW1. That Hawker was not more famous than other fighter aces such as Ball VC, McCudden VC or Mannock VC is simply due to the policy of the War Office to not publicize individuals at the time, preferring to stress the team work of the forces as a whole. They felt that the real work was being done by the Observation aircraft of the RFC.Hawker had just one order pinned to the Daily Orders Board in the pilot`s hut, it simply said:"Attack EVERYTHING!" This sums up the fighting spirit of this commander who was revered. He became well known also to the Germans who opposed him in the sky and when he was killed by Manfred von Richthofen (The Red Baron), who was in a far superior Albatross fighter aircraft to his DH2 Pusher, Manfred said he was the best English Flyer. This book is well written, cover all of his combats and postings and leaves you with a better understanding of how the RFC fought in the pioneering days of early WW1. You will love the book. Paul Davies (Historian) The brother of Lanoe Hawker VC DSO as a tribute wrote this fascinating book. The Hawkers came from a distinguished sporting family with strong military and naval records and Lanoe from the outset set his sights on flying for the RFC. After the Central Flying School he crossed to France in October 1914 with 6 Squadron equipped with BE2s and Henri Farmans. As the war in the air progressed so Hawker came more and more into his own both as a combat pilot and commander. He was rapidly promoted and given command of 24 Squadron. He, like other pilots, flew numerous machines such as Bristol Scouts, FE4227s and the famous DH2s. This book contains many combat reports by pilots of their missions and these make the most graphic reading. The relative merits, qualities and characteristics of the aircraft both British, French and German are discussed with pilots’ opinions. For a better insight into combat air operations Hawker VC – The First RFC Ace is unlikely to be surpassed, thanks to the extensive use of first-hand accounts. Casualty/death rates were appalling but this special band of brothers flew on regardless until their turn came. About the AuthorTyrrel Hawker was Lanoe's brother and a distinguished soldier in his own right. His son Peter is now in his 90s and living in Weymouth.
