Reviewed by John Graham Published on H-Socialisms (March, 2015) Commissioned by Gary Roth Bringing Keynes to America and Economics to the Masses: Walter Lippmann, Economic Journalist Walter Lippmann was the preeminent American journalist of the twentieth century. Distinguished for his intellectual depth and breadth, and for his vast personal contacts in academia and government, he wrote daily newspaper columns that were widely read and respected for close to fifty years, from the 1920s through the late 1960s. His authoritative columns were meant to inform his readers and to shape their opinions on a wide range of current political, social, and economic issues. In aNew Yorker cartoon from 1932, a dowager lady at breakfast confesses, “A cup of coffee and Walter Lippmann is all I need.” A voracious reader and quick writer, Lippmann could have been an academic or a politician but rejected both professions in favor of journalist and public intellectual. The only child of well-traveled, upper-middle-class New York German Jews, Lippmann graduated from Harvard in 1910. Over the next twenty years, he wrote six highly regarded books on moral philosophy, social issues, and politics; helped start the New Republic; and wrote the lead editorials for Joseph Pulitzer’s New York World. With its demise, he left the Democratic-leaning World for the Republican-leaning New York Herald Tribune. -
Adolf Augustus Berle
Institution Man Adolf Augustus Berle was born in 1866, the son of a German immigrant who soon died of the long-term effects of wounds he had suffered as a soldier under the command of Ulysses S. Grant in the Union Army. A physically tiny man with no inherited resources or connections, Berle had somehow by his early adulthood, in the closing years of the nineteenth century, acquired a super-powered personal force and drive. As a student at Oberlin College, in Ohio, he met and married Mary Augusta Wright, the daughter of one of the most renowned members of the faculty, a Congregationalist minister and professor of religion who was also, improbably, a renowned geologist. Berle himself studied theology, first at Oberlin and then at Harvard Divinity School, and became a Congregationalist minister. The Berles had four children. The second, and their first son, was Adolf Augustus Berle Junior, born in 1895. The elder Adolf Berle was a brilliant man with a very grand conception of his place in the world. This meant, on one hand, that he regularly alienated the congregations of the churches over which he presided, so he wound up moving around and never being given long-term control of a major pulpit; and, on the other, that he somehow knew everybody worth knowing, especially if the person was a prominent liberal. He was vastly ambitious for his children. He taught all of them at least the rudiments of Latin, Greek, and Hebrew, plus some mathematics, at the age of three. Years later, after the children had grown, Berle used them as instructors in a summer school he operated at his house in New Hampshire, which promised “to instruct a small number of superior children in such a way as will make them natural companions of knowledge.” He also wrote a book called “The School in the Home,” and another called “Teaching in the Home: A Handbook for Intensive Fertilization of the Child Mind for Instructors of Young Children,” both meant to make his prodigy-producing techniques widely available. -

GEORGE CREEL AND THE COMMITTEE ON PUBLIC INFORMATION 1917-1918 By Chloe Maxwell In September of 1916, a relatively unknown Kansas City journalist published a short book titled Wilson and the Issues.1 The short book, only 167 pages in length, was released deliberately in line with President Woodrow Wilson’s reelection. Within these pages, author George Creel systematically defends Wilson and his first term as president. Creel discusses events such as the German occupation of Belgium, the sinking of the Lusitania, and Wilson’s neutrality.2 Those familiar with Creel’s work called him a professional “muckraker” and an outspoken supporter of the Progressive agenda.3 Before war broke out in Europe, Creel advocated for child labor reforms, woman’s suffrage, and direct democracy. Over the course of World War 1, George Creel created an unprecedented propaganda machine that unified the United States behind the war. -

McCollough Columbus State University Wars are not won on battlefields alone. Logistics, strategy, resources, force strength, and technology have all played critical roles in determining outcomes in major conflicts throughout history. Yet, there are still two related factors that have much to say about the outcome of major conflicts: propaganda efforts to sell the war effort to the nation states that are a part of the conflict and its impact on public opinion around the participation of those nation states among its citizenry. History offers us some prominent examples that reinforce this point, and they consistently revolve around the ability of parties involved in the conflict to effectively leverage contemporary communication outlets to effective ends in order to shape and manage public opinion. Walter Lippmann’s iconic Public Opinion (1922) provides his perspective as a newsman and as a member of Woodrow Wilson’s collection of journalists, advertisers, early public relations practitioners, and education philosophers who worked from the United States’ involvement in World War I in April of 1917 through the effort to promote the Treaty of Versailles and the League of Nations. He warns of the potential for manipulation of information to cultivate and maintain support for military and political action, and the need for objectivity in journalism and a refined study of public opinion to counter its effects. The father of modern public relations, Edward Bernays, offered two texts on the subject of propaganda and its effectiveness in shaping public opinion on behalf of organizations. -
