This study explores in greater depth the political and ceremonial relations that existed between the ceremonial district of Xatsitsarie and San Andrés Cohamiata , one of three Wixaritari (Huichol) communities in the area of the Chapalagana River, in the northern area of the state of Jalisco ( Figure 1 , shown below). Moreover, it analyzes how the destruction of the Temple ( Tuki ) of Guadalupe Ocotán, together with the modification of the community's territory, determined the collapse of these ceremonial links in the second half of the 20th century. The ceremonial reorganization of this district is analyzed using a diachronic perspective, in which the ethnographic record, which begins with Lumholtz' work in the late 19th century, is contrasted with reports by missionaries and oral history. Similarly, on the basis of ethnographic data and information provided by archaeological studies, this study offers a reinterpretation of certain ethnohistorical sources related to the antecedents of these ceremonial centers.

    Mammal watching in Northern Mexico Vladimir Dinets Seldom visited by mammal watchers, Northern Mexico is a fascinating part of the world with a diverse mammal fauna. In addition to its many endemics, many North American species are easier to see here than in USA, while some tropical ones can be seen in unusual habitats. I travelled there a lot (having lived just across the border for a few years), but only managed to visit a small fraction of the number of places worth exploring. Many generations of mammologists from USA and Mexico have worked there, but the knowledge of local mammals is still a bit sketchy, and new discoveries will certainly be made. All information below is from my trips in 2003-2005. The main roads are better and less traffic-choked than in other parts of the country, but the distances are greater, so any traveler should be mindful of fuel (expensive) and highway tolls (sometimes ridiculously high). In theory, toll roads (carretera quota) should be paralleled by free roads (carretera libre), but this isn’t always the case. Free roads are often narrow, winding, and full of traffic, but sometimes they are good for night drives (toll roads never are). All guidebooks to Mexico I’ve ever seen insist that driving at night is so dangerous, you might as well just kill yourself in advance to avoid the horror. In my experience, driving at night is usually safer, because there is less traffic, you see the headlights of upcoming cars before making the turn, and other drivers blink their lights to warn you of livestock on the road ahead.

    The best way to cope with the coronavirus is to keep calm, and it’s important to make decisions based on sound and reliable information. When the World Health Organization (WHO) first declared a global health emergency due to the outbreak of coronavirus, the situation seemed far from the Western Hemisphere, and in Mexico we were on tenterhooks to see what would happen. The reality is that the virus has arrived in our country; there are currently 82 confirmed cases and the conversation revolves around the impact of an escalation. Countries and global businesses have begun to take measures including closing their branches, disinfecting their facilities, restricting executive travel, and, in the most extreme cases, closing borders. Though the issue is worrisome, companies must remain calm and avoid making decisions without thorough analysis and sufficient information. While protecting people’s health is of the utmost importance, we must be aware of the economic impact potentially generated by a wave of panic. In these very uncertain times, a good communications strategy with employees and organization members must include a balance between transparency of information and avoiding unnecessary fear. The conversation must be supported by facts, verifiable data, and a focus on keeping people informed of the situation. Maintaining calm helps to keep control and brings about a more stable and safer environment. Therefore, it is important to be aware of all the prevention, hygiene, and health measures that will be implemented within the state and follow them as indicated. In this manner, all who participate can execute and communicate correctly and effectively; this will allow us to provide safety for travelers, visitors, employees, and the community at large.

With a population of 105 million, Mexico is the 11th most populous country and the most populous Spanish-speaking country in the world. The nation’s capital, Mexico City, is the second largest city in the world. Mexico is composed by 31 states congregated in a federal representative democratic republic. The constitution establishes three levels of government: federal, state, and municipal. The federal government is constituted by the Legislative branch, composed by the Senate and the Chamber of Deputies, the Executive branch, headed by the President who is elected for a single term every six years by a direct national election and is also commander in chief of the military forces, and the Judicial branch, comprised by the Supreme Court.1 Recent Political and Economic Situation The economic policy from 1920 until the end of the 1980’s was based on a centralized economy driven by strong government intervention. During the 1950´s postwar years, Mexico pursued an economic development strategy of “stabilizing development” that relied on heavy public-sector investment to modernize the national economy.
