This paper aims to synthesize the studies conducted over time both on Ligularia sibirica species and Ligularia genus. The main objective of the paper is to identify the following research steps necessary for the optimal characterization, monitoring and conservation of the studied species and of its related populations. Ligularia genus includes species adapted to different climatic and environmental conditions from the European and Asian continent. Following the collected scientific material which holds data about L. sibirica, the author found a total of 166 bibliographic sources, of which 107 belong to Romania. The number of scientific materials found in Romania is correlated with the distribution of the L. sibirica species in the country. At European and Asian level, have been carried out phytosociology, genetics, biochemistry, biotechnology and phytopathology studies on Ligularia, while in our country taxonomic studies predominate, being part of some floristic surveys, monographs, etc., which need to be updated and completed. -

One of the highlights this past year includes the Wedding Pond Gardens as seen on the cover of this years’ catalog. The ribbon of Hosta ‘Pacific Blue Edger’ in bloom bordering the eclectic mix of perennials, trees and shrubs has stopped traffic on a regular basis. Adding a stone wall this past summer along the edge of the pond in the foreground will add an- other level of continuity next season as well. Additional advancements to the farm include removal of many pesky boulders from the fields. These boulders have been a major burden of my mowing chores for years. It turns out two of the giant car sized boulders are a beautiful native Maine granite that will be milled and used here on the farm as counter tops. -

Mycosphere 7(6), 853–867, Doi 10.5943/mycosphere/7/6/16 Abstract Ophiocordyceps sinensis (Cordyceps sinensis) has long been a Chinese Traditional Medicine and functional food in China. Because of its valued medicinal effect and improvement in the Chinese economy, market demand for O. sinensis has significantly increased in recent years. Here, we use multigene and High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) analysis of specimens bought from markets to reveal the sale of fake O. sinensis in Traditional Chinese Medicine markets. The insect larvae (belonging to Lepidopteran) was a different species to that normally infected by O. sinensis. Combined sequence analysis of ITS, nrSSU, EF-1α and RPB1 gene markers also revealed the putative O. sinensis to be Metacordyceps taii. Producers had gone to great lengths to produce remarkably similar fake O. sinensis specimens. The insect body was infected with M. -

The Lautaret Alpine Botanical Garden Guidebook
The Lautaret Alpine Botanical Garden Guidebook Serge Aubert The Lautaret Alpine Botanical Garden, as it exists today, has been shaped by the work of the bota- nists involved in its development for over a century. This guide presents the Garden itself (its history, work and collections), the exceptional environment of the Col du Lautaret, and provides an intro- duction to botany and alpine ecology. The guidebook also includes the results of research work on alpine plants and ecosystems carried out at Lautaret, notably by the Laboratory of Alpine Ecology based in Grenoble. The Alpine Garden has a varied remit: it is open to the general public to raise their awareness of the wealth of diversity in alpine environments and how best to conserve it, it houses and develops a variety of collections (species from mountain ranges across the world, a seed bank, herbarium, arboretum, image bank & specialist library), it trains students and contributes to research in alpine biology. It is a university botanical garden which develops synergies between science and society, welcoming in 15,000 – 20,000 visitors each summer. Prior to 2005 the Garden was not directly involved in research, but since then a partnership has been established with the Chalet-Laboratory through the Joseph Fourier Alpine Research Station, and mixed structure of the Grenoble University and of the French Scientific Recearch Centre (CNRS). These shared facilities also include the Robert Ruffier-Lanche arboretum and the glasshouses on the Grenoble campus. The Lautaret site is the only high altitude biological research station in Europe, and has been recognised by the French government’s funding programme (Investissements d’ave- nir) as Biology and Health National Infrastructure (ANAEE-S) in the field of ecosystem science and experimentation. -

The aim of the present study was to evaluate selected Asteraceae (Calendula officinalis ‘Persimmon Beauty’ and ‘Santana’, Centaurea macrocephala, Cosmos sulphureus, Dahlia pinnata, Tagetes patula, Tithonia rotundifolia, and Zinnia elegans) as pollen sources for pollinators. Under urban conditions in Lublin, SE Poland, the investigated plants flowered from late June to the end of October. The mass of pollen produced in florets and capitula was found to be species-related. The highest pollen amounts per 10 florets (10.1 mg) as well as per capitulum (249.7 mg) were found for C. macrocephala. The mass of pollen yielded by a single plant depended on both the pollen mass delivered per disk florets and the proportion of disk florets in capitulum, and the flowering abundance of the plants. A single plant of D. pinnata and a single plant of T. rotundifolia each produced the largest pollen mass. Mean pollen yield per 1m2 of a plot ranged from 6.2 g (Z. elegans) to 60.7 g (D. pinnata). Pollen grains are tricolporate, with echinate exine, medium or small in size. -

Some of these alien species manage to establish reproducing naturalized populations, and some naturalized alien species subsequently become invasive. Invasion by alien plant species can negatively affect native communities and ecosystems, but what gives the alien species an advantage under novel conditions is still not clear. Therefore, identifying the drivers of invasions has become a major goal in invasion ecology. Reproduction is crucial in plant invasions, because propagule supply is required for founding new populations, population maintenance and spread in non-native regions. Baker’s Law, referring to the superior advantage of species capable of uniparental reproduction in establishing after long distance dispersal, has received major interest in explaining plant invasions. However, previous findings regarding Baker’s Law are contradicting. Moreover, there has been an increasing interest in understanding the integration of alien plant species into native plant-pollinator networks but few studies have looked at the pollination ecology of successful (naturalized and invasive) and unsuccessful (non-naturalized and non-invasive) alien plant species. -
