The contacts for these clubs and organisations are normally a dedicated group of volunteers who give up their free time for their club and sport. Please bear this in mind when trying to contact clubs within this directory. All the information within this directory was received from the clubs and reproduced with their consent and the contents are correct at the time of going to press. A regularly updated list is available at www.swale.gov.uk and click on Sports Development. If your club is not included in this directory and would like it to be, please contact Ben Maxfield on 01795 417388 or [email protected] 02 The Benefits of Physical Activity and Healthy Eating _ The benefits of regular physical activity are well researched and accepted. Regular physical activity improves both your physical and mental health. It is one of the most important factors in maintaining a good quality of life. The heart is the most important muscle that we possess and it needs regular exercise to keep it fit to pump blood around the body to our muscles and brain. Regular physical activity (this means working hard enough to make breathing harder than normal, and becoming slightly warmer and at least 30 minutes on 5 days a week) will make a difference to your quality of life in many different ways. Benefits include: Better health - regular activity will reduce the risks of Coronary Heart Disease, high blood pressure, obesity, and other related diseases. More energy - you will be able to cope with your daily routine and have energy to spare Reduced stress - you will be able to relax more easily and feel better about yourself Stronger muscles and bones Better balance, suppleness and mobility Improved sleep More social opportunities Increased enjoyment of life For more information on healthy eating please visit these websites: www.eatwell.gov.uk www.food.gov.uk www.nutrition.org.uk 03 Regular physical activity should also be supplemented by healthy eating. Healthy eating is about eating a balanced diet, there are no good or bad foods. All foods can be included in a healthy diet as long as they are consumed in moderation and the overall balance of nutrients is correct. The balance of healthy eating should include the following 5 food groups: Fruit and vegetables, Bread, potatoes, pasta Meat, and fish Milk, and dairy products Foods with fat and sugar and be based on the following principles enjoy your food eat a wide variety of foods eat the right amount to be a healthy weight eat plenty of fruit and vegetables eat plenty of foods with starch and fibre don’t eat too many foods with fat and sugar drink plenty of water don’t drink too much alcohol, fizzy or sugary drinks 04 Sport & Leisure Directory for Swale 2005 _ Aikedo -
