Sport and recreation sector commit to tackling inequality The appalling death of George Floyd, the global protests that have followed and the powerful message of the Black Lives Matter movement has made every section of society take notice and confront an ugly truth. Sport and recreation has an influential role to bring about meaningful change and this period has rightly led the sector to reflect, listen, question, learn and openly discuss how to take positive action. It is acknowledged that up to this point, we have not done enough. It is time to confront racism and inequality that exists across sport, from grassroots participation through to the boardroom. Research by the Sport and Recreation Alliance (2018) showed that four in ten (40%) of BAME participants have endured a negative experience in sport or physical activity settings, more than double that of white participants. A 2020 Sport England report demonstrates that just over 50% of black people in England meet the recommended levels of physical activity each week. The Diversity in Sport Governance report (2018/19) identified there is only 5% BAME board representation across Sport England and UK Sport funded organisations. Constructive work has already been started to address a number of these problems including a committed effort to increase boardroom diversity, additional funding to tackle inequality and an array of inspiring inclusiveness projects from across the sport and recreation sector. This can only be seen as the start. Systemic change must be made at all levels so that we can become truly reflective of our wonderfully diverse society. We can no longer rely on black role models at the elite level speaking out, we must join together to become better and to support every member of the sport and recreation community.

Tel: (209) 946 2981 Email: [email protected] 1 The UK Netball Superleague: A Case Study of Franchising in Elite Women's Sport Abstract This paper draws on theories of franchising in examining the emergence of the UK Netball Superleague in 2005. The focus of the paper is to explore the development of an empowered franchise framework as part of England Netball's elite performance strategy and the consequences of the Superleague for player performance, team success, and commercial potential of the franchises. The findings from 22 in-depth interviews conducted between 2008-2011 with franchise personnel and sport media/marketing consultants inform the discussion. The paper further comments on the implications of the empowered franchise system for developing NGB elite performance strategies. Introduction Emerging in the late 19th century as a sport “initially designed and traditionally administered as an activity for promoting appropriate forms of femininity” (Tagg, 2008, p 410), Netball is played by more than 20 million people in over 80 nations across the globe (INFA, 2011). It is an invasion ball game predominantly played by girls and women between teams of 7 players.

  • Athletics Inclusive April - June 2021
ATHLETICS INCLUSIVE APRIL - JUNE 2021 Welcome to the second edition of the quarterly equality, diversity and inclusion news from UK Athletics, Athletics Northern Ireland, England Athletics, Scottish Athletics and Welsh Athletics. PARA INCLUSION Welsh Athletics As part of our ongoing commitment to closer working with Disability Sport Wales [DSW], Welsh Athletics is in the process of recruiting a jointly funded Para Athletics Pathway Coordinator. We have seen great recent success at the European Para-athletics Championships with a total of 7 medals from Welsh Athletes and we hope this joint working will continue and build on this success as the organisation become more closely integrated. The role will support the development and progression of Para Athletes within the Athletics Pathway (from community through to performance) as identified by Disability Sport Wales and Welsh Athletics. It will aim to ensure that all Para Athletes within the pathway have access to appropriate and meaningful community opportunities to support individual needs. There will also be mentoring and upskilling outreach support for athletes, coaches, clubs and key contacts in collaboration with the DSW Performance Pathway Team and WA. This is an exciting opportunity in a role which will be fully integrated into the Welsh Athletics Performance team at the start of preparations for the Birmingham 2022 Games. Scottish Athletics With athletics training returning across the country, a Safe Return to Training guide has been produced for wheelchair and frame running to remind athletes, coaches and clubs of the extra safety considerations. The guidance highlights equipment checks, how to minimise risks, training safely on the track and training safely on the road.

  • UCI Track Cycling Nations Cup Newport – 22 - 25 April 2021
Round # 1 – UCI Track Cycling Nations Cup Newport – 22 - 25 April 2021 GENERAL INFORMATION Newport is a vibrant, multi-cultural city steeped in a rich industrial heritage, where traditional industries sit alongside new electronics and financial service sectors. At the gateway of Wales, surrounded by stunning scenery and a growing international profile Newport may surprise you. Newport’s history dates back to a Celtic settlement 2000 years ago and the city's location at the mouth of the River Usk has attracted visitors for centuries. Caerleon, just a few miles from Newport, was also the site of a fortress of the 2nd (Augustan) Roman legion from the first century AD. The Normans settled in Newport and built a castle beside the river Usk in the 14th century, the remains of which you can see today. The discovery of the remains of a sea-going vessel in 2002 gives evidence of Newport as a centre of industry and trade in the medieval period. During the 19th century industrial revolution Newport expanded rapidly from a small seaport town to one of the most important places in the country for coal export and steel production and the town became known for its accessible modern docks. Newport is also home to the Newport Transporter Bridge, one of around 10 that remain is use throughout the world and one of only two operational transporter bridges in the UK. Global leaders in technology, manufacturing, distribution, financial services and public sector organisations are attracted to the city’s superb location. Over 2.69 million people visit the city annually and events are a key part of Newport having successfully delivered large global events including the Ryder Cup in 2010 and NATO summit in 2014.

  • Hyde Road Results 19 Sept
MCC Response Hyde Road should have a dedicated cycle path, to use in both directions that is separate from traffic. The scheme is approximately 300m long and provides spatial provision should a cycleway be promoted for the corridor in the C 14 future. An application for cycle funding was made and rejected. Stairs for cyclists? I thought cycling what part of the strategy for reducing CO2 emissions in Manchester? This is only a deterrent. The steps are an additional provision made for pedestrians. However a wheeling ramp will also be provided for cyclists. Currently there is no provision to connect to the Fallowfield Loop at this location and therefore there is an overall benefit to the non motorised users. It is unfortunate but a ramp is not feasible due to land constraints, costs and serviceability. The other access points to the Fallowfield Loop will remain such as off Wall Way, which provide Disability Discrimination Act C 15 compliant access. This stretch of road needs safe, segregated cycling provision as part of this work. The location is immediately adjacent to the Fallowfield Loop The scheme is approximately 300m long and provides spatial provision should a cycleway be promoted for the corridor in the line, which brings cyclists to the area, which makes the need for safe, segregated cycling provision even more important. Please could you future. An application for cycle funding was made and rejected. seek the views of Cycling Commissioner Chris Boardman on this (and the views of his planning experts). Better to sort this out properly at the C 16 planning stage, rather than incur additional expense putting it right later.

  • From Coal Mining to Gold Medals
From coal mining to gold medals The area around Philips Park has a rich industrial heritage. Former industries include coal mining, cotton mills, engineering works, coking works, power production and chemicals. Famous local industries include Bradford Colliery: coal had been mined in the area since Tudor times, and Bradford coal was used to power the very first cotton mills in Manchester. Deep mine shafts were sunk in the nineteenth century, and in the early twentieth century there was a conveyor belt that took coal to the nearby power station. Bradford Colliery finally closed in 1968. Johnson and Nephew's wire works was similarly famous, supplying wire for the first transatlantic cables and many other products exported all over the world. By the 1980s, most of these traditional industries had closed and the surrounding area was largely derelict with many social problems. East Manchester has been massively transformed and work is continuing by the work of New East Manchester and the development of SportCity. In 2002, East Manchester was the focus of the XVII Commonwealth Games, which brought a wealth of new development to the area, including: • The City of Manchester Stadium • The National Cycling Centre (Manchester Velodrome) • The English Institute of Sport • National Squash Centre • Regional Athletics Arena • Indoor Tennis Centre • For information about SportCity, please visit the SportCity Visitor Centre or check out the website at www.sportcity-manchester.com Medlock Valley Information - Industry Page 1 of 1 .
