The British Open Pre Qualification Events

Joey Barrington Follows Famous Fathers Footsteps The first three Allam British Open pre-qualifying events took place on the 20/21 April, with Joey Bar- rington , Richie Fallows and Harriet Ingham claiming their places in the qualifying draws. Barrington, the 32-year-old son of six-time champion Jonah, is currently ranked at #164 in the world after concentrating on his commentating role with SquashTV, but as a former world #24 is still a force to be reckoned with. The 32-year-old weathered the storm to complete a straight-games victory against Ben Ford in the final. Barrington finally completed a 16-14, 11-7, 11-6 victory in 50 minutes as he won the event at the Parklangley.

Richie Fallows also progressed to The Allam British Open Main Qualification draw. Fallows, is Eng- land’s leading under 17 player and a great prospect for the future. He competed in the event held at the Connaught Club, and endured a fierce onslaught from fellow England junior Nick Mulvey in his semi- final winning 8/11, 11/3, 12/10, 7/11, 11/8 before facing world deaf champion Jamie Mathews in the final. The final was another epic five game match with Fallow’s coming out on top again 11/6, 7/11, 11/4, 11/13, 11/9, forcing his way through to the Allam British Open Qualification draw which takes place at St Georges Hill Squash Club on 12-13 May.

Harriet Ingham won the ladies event at the Connaught Club, beating Selina Sinclair 11/4, 13/11, 8/11, 11/5 in the final in another tightly contested affair to claim her place in the qualifying draw where she’ll play at her home club, St George’s Hill. These events provide an opportunity for all the players involved to become a part of the Allam British Open, the winner of each event will progress into the main event qualification draw alongside world ranked players from the PSA and WSA world tours, from which the top eight players will join the world’s leading players in the Allam British Open Championships at the O2 Piazza.

Ben Ford Succeeds At Second Attempt The second weekend of Allam British Open pre-qualifying events saw Finchley Manor Squash Club in Middlesex host a men’s draw. After two wins each, the final was between second seed Ben Ford , and 3/4 seed Tristan Eysele, and it turned out to be a thrilling marathon match lasting 78 minutes. The fifth was neck and neck with Ford having the first of four match balls at 10/9 before finally taking it 16/14. After losing the final the previous week to Joey Barrington, Ford won through at the second attempt as he made it through to the Allam British Open Qualifica- tion draw which takes place at St Georges Hill Squash Club on 12- 13 May.

Alex Phillips , a coach at Winchester SC and a regular in their PSL team won the men’s event at the K2 Leisure Centre, beating Clive Ewins 11/8, 11/5, 11/4 in the final in a tightly contested game. Ford, the reigning British Open O35 Champion along with Phillips, joins Joey Barrington and Richie Fallows, who won their places in last week’s pre-qualifying events. Georgina Ingham won the ladies event at K2 Leisure Centre beat- ing Annabelle Collins Ballands 11/6, 9/11, 6/11, 11/8, 9/11 in the final to claim her place in the qualifying draw and in doing that made it a double for the Ingham family and St George’s Hill players – with Harriet already through from last weekend.

REGIONAL TEAM CHAMPIONSHIPS 2012 REPORT

Birmingham once again played host to the Regional Team Championships and each region was in attendance hoping to be crowned as the 2012 champions. The Mixed Under 11 ’s final was contested between London & SE and the West Midlands . The West Midlands were in great form against the East Midlands & East however they were given a strong test by the South Region. After the tie had finished the teams were tied with 8 games each however West Midlands earned 4 bonus points and won overall by 3 points 134-131, putting them in the final. The London & SE region cruised through their group to reach the final earning 45 points out of 48. In the final both teams again were level on games with Kiera Marshall and Amy Rogers doing the business for the West Midlands winning their games 3-0 and Perry Malik and Jack Mitterer doing the same for London & SE again winning 3-0. However Torie Malik and Margot Prow had done just enough in their defeats to secure the win with London & SE winning on points 107-96 In the Girls Under 13 , Group A was a close group with the North East coming out victorious. The East Region stomped their authority over Group B without dropping a single point winning each game 16-0. In the final Poppie Jaram and Ellen Cooper got the North West off to a flying start putting their team 2-0 up, however Elise Lazarus responded swiftly winning 3-0 against Laura Neil to ensure that the final would be decided by the last match. Lucy Turmel kept her nerve in her match wining 3-1 to give the East the overall win by 8 games to 7. The Boys Under 13 final looked like it was always going to be a close one as both the North East & London & SE pro- gressed from their groups to the final with the maximum 48 points. After the first 2 matches the teams were level 1-1 as Elliot Ridge won 3-1 for the North East and Alex Engstrom winning 3-0 for London & SE. Michael Mattimore once again put North East in front winning 3-2 only for Sam Exelby to seal the win for London & SE 8-7 on games. With 3 top 10 ranked players in the London & SE team they were always going to be a tough team to beat. They showed their dominance in the group stages winning all three games taking the maximum 16 points from each to reach the final. Their opponents in the final were the South West who after narrowly winning their first match on games 10-9 soon found their rhythm and won their next two matches to reach the final. The final was slightly anticlimactic as the London & SE were in ruthless streak showing no mercy on their opponents winning all four games to secure the match 16-2. London & SE were back again this year looking to retain their Boys Under 15 title and gave themselves the opportunity to do so by reaching the final after three straight wins in the group stages. The North West emerged as their opponents after winning all three of their group matches. In the final Isaac Rawcliffe and Oliver Harris put the North West in a com- manding position and English Junior Champion Patrick Rooney confirmed the victory for the North West beating Charlie Lee 3-0. Jack Martell won a small consolation for London & SE as he beat Number 2 string James Connor 3-1. In the Girls Under 17 event the West Midlands looked like the team to beat with U19 No3 Chloe Pearson leading the charge and Under 17 No3 Alicia Mead & No7 Lucy Pallet right behind her. They prevailed in all three of their group matches to reach the final. Looking to stop their run of victories was the South West who had took 45 points from 48 in their group. Alice Harvey and Lucy Pallett gave the West Midlands a 2-0 lead and after Chloe Pearson went 2-0 up in her match it looked all over. However Kip Quiney gave a spirited fight back to level the match 2-2 only for Pearson to seal the South Wests fate winning 3-2 and winning the title for the West Midlands. Alicia Mead put the final nail in the coffin win- ning her match 3-0. The East Midlands returned this year in the Under 17 Boys to retain their title and with only one alteration to their team it looked like they would take some stopping. They managed to reach the final with each team member playing their part to ensure 45 points out a 48. In the other group after 2 matches the North East went in to their final group leading the East Region by only 2 points and knew that a win would be enough to secure a spot in the final in this crucial match. Jack Cooper calmed any nerves with a straight forward 3-0 win at 4, however the East were right back in the tie when Josh Turmel won 3-2 as James Peach earned a valuable 2 points for the North East. Taminder Gata-Aura beat Angus Gillams 3-1 regaining the advantage for the North East meaning that a 3-0 win for the East in their last match would still not be enough giving the North East a spot in the final. In the final the ever reliable Jack Cooper took the first game for the North East winning 3-0 against Luke Parker and Hamish Falconer made his physical presence count against James Peach winning 3-0 to level the tie 1-1. Russell Clarke pulled out an amazing performance at number one to beat Taminder Gata-Aura and give the East Midlands a command- ing lead. George Parker completed the victory with a comfortable win over Tom Lee as East Midlands retained their title. Last years winners South West were unsuccessful this year in defending their title managing a third place finish. The North East managed to improve one place from 2011 taking second spot however with wins in Under 11’s, Boys Under 13 & Girls Under 15’s as well as second place in the Boys Under 15, London & South East dropped only 1 point in half of the events which proved to be the decisive factor in the overall finishing table giving them the overall first place.

Surrey Health & St George's Hill Celebrate Second Successive PSL Final

Integrity Surrey Health & Racquets and TWP St George's Hill will contest an all-Surrey Premier Squash League (PSL) final for the second year in a row after two of the quickest wins of the season in the semi-finals of the world's most prestigious squash league.

Both teams romped to unassailable 3/0 leads to confirm their repeat of the 2011 climax - Weybridge- based St George's Hill ending up with a 3/2 away win over former champions Benz-Bavarian Duf- field and title-holders Surrey Health crushing MB Nottingham , also ex-champions, 5/0 at home. Croydon-based Surrey Health are now just one win away from a unique double - not only becoming the first team in the league's 27-year history to take three titles in a row, but also the first to win four titles in all.

A packed house in the Derbyshire village of Duffield saw the hosts - themselves three times PSL champions - go down quickly to their southern visitors. The opening bout saw two of the world's top women go head-to-head - and it took 56 minutes for British champion , the world No3 from Preston, to edge out Yorkshire's world No2 14-12, 7-11, 11-7, 11-8 to put St George's ahead.

Joe Lee and Swiss maestro Nicolas Mueller clinched the tie for St George's soon afterwards - Lee licking local boy Paul Hargrave 11-5, 12-10, 11-1 in just 27 minutes and Mueller needing three min- utes less to see off Andy Whipp 11-7, 11-5, 11-6.

The capacity crowd went home with some consolation after South African Stephen Coppinger beat a probably jet-lagged Tom Richards 11-9, 11-8, 11-8 - and Duffield star Nick Matthew , the world champion from Sheffield, defeated England team-mate Daryl Selby 11-9, 11-8, 11-13, 13-11. "It was a great night for us," admitted St George's Hill team manager Danny Lee . "All credit to Laura for giving us a great start in a good tactical game against her England team-mate. There's been a great team spirit all season and they were all up for it tonight. "I'm also really pleased for our sponsors TWP who have supported us now for the past four years," added Lee.

It was one-way traffic in Croydon where defending champions Surrey Health punished a less than full strength Nottingham squad. Londoner , a former world No3, beat 18-year-old Emily Whitlock , winner of a second successive European Junior Championship trophy earlier this month, 11-3, 11-4, 11-5 to put the home side in the driving seat. And four further straight games wins followed as , Alan Clyne , Adrian Grant and Pe- ter Barker powerfully led the home team to their whitewash win. "It's very good to be in the final again," said Surrey Health team manager Pete Smith . "All our team performed well tonight and we now look forward to meeting St George's Hill again. "It'll be a good final, without doubt." The final will take place on Tuesday 8 May, at a venue yet to be decided.

RESULTS: Premier Squash League , Semi-Finals, Tuesday 17 April 2012 Benz-Bavarian Duffield 2 TWP St George's Hill 3 Nick Matthew bt Daryl Selby 11-9, 11-8, 11-13, 13-11 Stephen Coppinger bt Tom Richards 11-9, 11-8, 11-8 (37m) Andy Whipp lost to Nicolas Mueller 7-11, 5-11, 6-11 (24m) Paul Hargrave lost to 5-11, 10-12, 1-11 (27m) Jenny Duncalf lost to Laura Massaro 12-14, 11-7, 7-11, 8-11 (56m)

WALLER DEFENDS HIS TITLE AS PERRY CLAIMS HER FIRST U23 CROWN The British U23 Championships was held at Hunts County Squash Club in Cambridgeshire this past weekend as the best young talent from across the land came together to compete for the chance to be named National U23 Champion.

The reigning Men’s champion Adrian Waller returned as the top seed with a view to defend his title and was joined by many European Junior Champions past and present as well as British Junior Champions all looking to make an impact. 9/16 seed Tom Ford had a particular impressive tournament as he took two noticeable scalps, first he ended the run of 5/8 seed and was then pitted against the 3/4 seed Declan James in the quarter finals. James had beaten him two weeks prior to this event in the European Junior Finals and Ford was looking to even the score. An hour long match that finished 3-0 saw Ford rewarded with a semi final match, this time against top seed Adrian Waller. Waller had had little trouble as he moved through the rounds of this tournament, his first two matches were over in less than 30 minutes and he made light work of his quarter final match against 5/8 seed , moving into the semi finals with a 3-0 victory in 35 minutes. It was Wallers good run that would con- tinue, his speed, accuracy and experience too much for Ford to contest with as he took only 26 minutes to take a 3-0 victory that earned him a place in the final.

Joe Lee, the 2 nd seed from Surrey would be the man who would go up against Waller in the final. Lee himself had rarely been tested on his way through, the only game he had dropped in any match was against Scotland’s Greg Lobban in the quarter finals in a 3-1 victory that lasted 45 minutes. Lee then faced James Earles in the semi finals, the British U19 Champion who was on a good run of his own after dispatching the 3/4 seed Anthony Graham in the quarters. Despite playing good squash and mak- ing few mistakes, Earles was powerless to stop Lee from dominating the game and taking a 3-0 win in 35 minutes.

With the top two seeds contesting the final, the crowd at Hunts County was expecting a great game and they weren’t disappointed. Waller and Lee entertained them with a wonderful display of world class squash played in a great spirit between close friends. Waller started well and took the first 11-8 before Lee found his stride and took the next two games, at this point it looked like Lee would run away with it but Waller dug in to make it 2-2 and take it into the fifth. Waller had the momentum and kept it with him, just doing enough to keep Lee at bay and edge closer to the title, after 75 minutes it was Waller who was victorious and will have his name etched onto the trophy one more time.

Sarah Jane Perry returned this year as top seed and hot favourite to claim the Women’s U23 title. Perry was last year’s runner up and meant business from the start. On her way to the final Perry won all 3 matches under 20 minutes without dropping a game. Facing her in the final was the 2 nd seed Carrie Ramsey; Ramsey herself had enjoyed a good run through until the semi finals where she faced 3/4 seed Victoria Bell. Bell played some good squash, however Ramsey was a little sharper and took the important points when it mattered claiming the first two tie breaks 13-11 and 12-10. Ramsey pushed on in the third and sealed her place in the final with an 11-7 game making it 3-0 as Bell ran out of steam.

The final started with Perry dominating the court and flying into a great lead with an 11-3 first game. Ramsey regrouped and got into a rhythm at the start of the second and held a slight lead, however Perry fought back and claimed 6 points on the bounce. Ramsey fought back well to make it 9-10 but couldn’t hold out and went 2 games down. Ramsey kept to her game and eventually started to control the rallies in the third, this time it was Perry’s turn dig in to take it to a tie break and Ramsey took it to take a game back and give the crowd the competitive final they came to see. Losing the third game seemed to spur Perry on and she quickly found the form and style she started the match in, she took a slight lead and held it, 11-9 in the fourth to Perry who now adds the U23 title to her British and Euro- pean U19 title collection.

Adrian Waller beat Joe Lee (Surrey) 11-8 6-11 6-11 11-6 11-7 in 75 Minutes Sarah Jane Perry beat Carrie Ramsey 11-3 11-9 10-12 11-9 in 42 Minutes

Neighbourhood Games

With only a few months to go until the Olympic Games hundreds of young people from across Tower Hamlets took part in the annual Winter Neighbourhood Games held at Play on Sports. The games, run by the Tower Hamlets Youth Sport Foundation and supported by Lloyds of London, see’s children from every ward in Tower Hamlets come down and compete against each other in a wide range of sports. What makes the event so special and unique is the fact that the teams (mini-clubs) are organised and managed by sports leaders known locally as PETAs (Physical Education Teaching Assis- tants) who arrange activity in their respective areas and coach the local chil- dren in a variety of sports in the run up to the event. The event not only al- lows the young people to showcase the skills they have learnt at their mini- club, but it also gives an opportunity for local mainstream clubs to come to the event and talent spot any potential athletes to join their teams. The com- petitive sports which took place at the games this year were football, basket- ball, hockey and squash. Children also got to try out a huge range of taster sports throughout the day including; rowing, gymnastics, BMX, boxing, padel tennis, kayaking, tae kwondo, judo and fencing. At the end of the day partici- pants took away a ‘goodie bag’ with information about all the sports they had done throughout the day and how to join the mainstream sports clubs in Tower Hamlets.

SQUASH Running at the same time as the football was the squash competition. Each mini-club had to put forward one participant to compete with the format being the same as the football. 8 groups, 4 teams in each group and only one player progressing from each group to the quarter final stages. Although squash was a very new sport for a lot of the participants the standard was still very high with some new talent definitely being unearthed. Under the watchful eye of Raju Rahman, the Tower Hamlets Squash Coach, and some England Squash & Racketball volunteers the players went about trying to gain as many points as possible for their club. Swastik Ghupta from the Cu- bitt Town Crocodiles made a big impression on his group by easing through to the quarter finals without losing a game and Sadia Aktar from the Burdett Bats was the only girl to make it through to the quarter final stages. After many close games in the quarter finals four teams were left to play their way into the final these were, the Stepney East Sharks, Spitalfields Storm, Cubitt Town Crocodiles and the Burdett Bats. But it was Rezwan Hussain from the Spitalfields Storm that triumphed over everyone else beating Swastik Ghupta in the final and gained 100 valuable points for the reigning champions.

Men’s and Women’s Inter County Finals 28-29 April

3/4 Play Off: Nottinghamshire v Sussex Nottinghamshire were already a game up before the tie started with Sussex failing to produce a 5th string, due to yesterdays’ injury to Ben Hutton. Sussex not wanting to give anything else to the Notts team fought to level the match 1-1 when 3rd string Tom Pashley took a closely fought victory over Nott’s Jonathon Underhill winning it in the 5th 4/11 in 42 minutes. Nottinghamshire came back however with 4th string Matthew Oxley and 1st string Lewis Walters giving victory to Notts with victories over Brandon Hanley and Oliver Pett. Sussex restored some order though taking the dead rubber in just 12 minutes with 2nd string Tim Vail beating Richard Underhill 11/3 11/8 11/8. NOTTINGHAMSHIRE 3 SUSSEX 2

FINAL: Cheshire v Surrey Cheshire’s men, perhaps surprise finalists took on 10times previous winners and current holders Sur- rey. Jamie Matthews got Surrey off to a great start with a tight win over Cheshire’s 5th String Mike Pot- ter taking it 11/5 in the 5th in a match lasting 50 minutes. Neil Frankland then put Surrey in a com- manding position when he beat 3rd string Rob Taylor 11/3 11/5 11/5. Cheshire’s Sean Hunter and Andy Whipp looked to keep the tie alive for Cheshire when they stepped on court but Surrey’s World number 65 Joe Lee dispatched Whipp in 3 games giving Surrey victory and despite having match ball in the 5th at 10/4 up, Sean Hunter eventually lost to surreys James Simpson of Surrey 13/11 in the 5th. World Number 88 put the icing on the cake beating Cheshire’s Adam Murrills 3-0. Surrey not only retained their title, making it three in a row and also chalked up their 11th victory in 13 years – an outstanding achievement. CHESHIRE 0 SURREY 5

Men’s final Standings: SURREY: 1st, SUSSEX: 4th

WOMEN 7/8 Play Off: Nottinghamshire v Middlesex With a walkover at 5thstring already in the bag Nottinghamshire went 2 matches up in the tie when Sue Pinnegar grabbed a 3-1 win over Middlesex’s Clare Richardson at 4thstring. Middlesex pulled one back though when 3rd string Rosa Ruis came from a game down to take the match 3-1. 1st string Selina Sinclair then pulled the tie to 2 matches all when she saw off Nottinghamshire’s Hannah Govey 3-0. 2nd String Eva Feredoes then put the nail in Nottinghamshire’s coffin with a 3-1 victory over Rachel Rinkavage in 20 minutes. MIDDLESEX 3 NOTTINGHAMSHIRE 2

5/6 Play Off: Surrey v Northumbria Isabelle Tweedle kicked things off for Surrey with a 3-1 win over Karen Heron before young Alison Thompson increased Surrey’s advantage with an impressive 3-1 win over Lucy Beecroft at 3rd string. 5th place was then secured for the southerners when Katie Wilson cruised to a 3/0 victory over Emma Barnett in just 16 minutes. The last 2 remaining matches saw Surrey’s 1st string Harriet Ingham beat Sarah Bowles 3-0 in just 17 minutes, some pride however was restored when Northumbria’s 2nd string Sam Ward beat Kim Graham 3-1 in the final match of the tie. SURREY 4 NORTHUMBRIA 1

Women’s final standings: SURREY: 5th, MIDDLESEX: 7th
