SURREY 3 HAMPSHIRE 2
WOMEN’S O-50, Runners-up, Kent v Surrey
MEN’S O-60, Third Place, Surrey v Yorkshire
Surrey’s chances of winning the over 60’s squash were dealt a severe blow when Steve Jackson suffered some cracked ribs in a bizarre accident at a club training session just a few days before the finals weekend. Allan Davison was in America on business, so David Lyscom stepped up to play at 3 in the team. In the first semi final Surrey took on the defending champions, Yorkshire. David Lyscom playing 3 was first on court for Surrey and quickly won the first game 9-1, but his opponent gradually took control and eased to a 3-1 win. Paul Garbutt, playing 1 was next on court and he lost a close first game 9-6. He battled hard in the second game to take the lead only to lose it 10-8. A long 3rd game again went to 8-8, but this time Paul came out on top. The 4th was again closely fought, but it was the Yorkshireman, who looked very fit, who eventually took the match 3-1 and put Yorkshire through to the final. Alasdair Niven raced to a 3-0 win in the dead rubber. For the 3rd / 4th play off Lancashire had only 2 players, so with Alasdair Niven winning his match Surrey took 3rd place with a 2-1 victory. Thanks to Surrey’s reserve, Graham Whitehead, for playing a friendly match against a borrowed player in a dead rubber at 3.
It is said that the best is left to last and so it proved in a most dramatic and exciting final, between these county neighbours. Sue Giles (Kent) and Kim Ricks (Surrey) got things underway at 3rd string and Giles stormed into an 8/0 lead against a tense Ricks. With the game seemingly lost Ricks relaxed saved match ball at 8/0 and drew back to 4/8 before losing 9/7. Giles went 6/2 up, but Ricks clawed back to 6 all despite Giles having game ball, she was the one who tensed up and this time it was the Kent player who tensed up and Ricks squared things up taking it 10-8. However it was clear in the next game that effort expended so far had taken its toll on Giles, and she struggled in the 3rd losing it 9/3, to take Ricks one game away from victory. Nip and tuck until the midway point of the 4th Ricks pulled away at 6/5 and took it 9/6. So Mandy Akin had to win at first string against Tammy Bennett to prevent Surrey becoming Champions, and she did just that, completely out classing Bennett 9/3 9/1 9/3 in just 15 minutes. The outcome would now be decided by the number 2’s, Karen Hume and Julie Ledger. Leger’s fine form in these championships continued as she comfortably took the 1st in just 8 minutes. Hume is a fierce competitor and came flying back in the 2nd going 6/3 up, but Ledger hung in to get to 6 all. Hume pulled away once more and levelled things up at 1 all winning 9/6. The 3rd was very similar to the 1st, but this time the way of Hume as she dropped just 2 points winning it 9/2. If the 3rd followed the pattern of the 1st, then the 4th mirrored the 2nd, close throughout, and the tension grew along with the lets! Ledger went 6/3 then 8/5 up. Hume saved 2 game balls before succumbing 9/6. The outcome of the final game games was anyone’s guess. Hume went 3/1 up, back came Ledger 5/3 up, Hume responded – 5/5. It was still 5 a piece after 5 exchanges of serve. The tension on and off court was palpable. And it was Ledger who tightened up making some errors and Hume held her nerve to win 9/5 to the jubilation of her watching team mates and supporters.
Cumbria were worthy winners of the over 60’s without losing a rubber all weekend. Surrey lost 2-1 to Yorkshire in the semi final as follows: Paul Garbutt v Mark Thompson 6-9, 8-10, 10-8, 5-9 Alasdair Niven v Steve Williams 9-0, 9-0, 9-6 David Lyscom v Roy Robinson 9-1, 5-9, 2-9, 2-9
Bob Gray
MEN OVER 35, Third Place, Surrey v Hampshire
This was a relatively one sided playoff tie. The 5th and the 1st string matches being the picks of the tie. The 5th string match between Michael Hennings (Surrey) and Jason Vigiers (Hampshire) was close all the way through. Hennings won the first 12/10 and then the 2nd 11/7. He could have closed it out 3-0 but Vigiers won a hard fought 3rd game 12/10, he then won the 4th 11/2 and it seemed that he would complete the comeback in the 5th, but Hennings stubbornly resisted and took it 12/10 to put Surrey 1 up.Jason Fletcher also won comfortably at 3rd string for Surrey. The 4th string match was a walkover to Hampshire as James Greenhead could not continue after damaging his hand in the knock up. Neil Frankland had to survive a tough 5 game battle with Matt Holland who went 2-1 up before running out of steam in the final 2 games to

Final placings - 2013/14
Neil Frankland ensured that he went through the weekend unbeaten securing a comfortable win over Bradley Masters to put Surrey ahead. Bradleys brother Josh also made it 3 out of 3 with a fine 3-1 win against the experienced Phil Rushworth. A tight 3rd between Chris Tomlinson and James Simpson, went the way of Surrey’s Simpson 3-2. A tight opening first game between the 2nd strings Charles Sharpes and Steve London, went the way of London, and despite losing the second, he came through to win 3-1 for Kent. Ben Ford couldn’t live with his younger opponent Joe Lee who won 3-0 to give Surrey 3rd place.

WOMEN, Runners-up, Cheshire v Surrey
Cheshire captain Kirsty West had started the weekend not as confident of Cheshire retaining their title due to the unavailability of 2 key players, and she might have been more concerned as Surrey took the vital opening rubber 3-0 when Isabelle Tweedle beat Annie Openshaw-Blower 3-0 as well as the 3rd string game between Olivia Howell and Alison Thomson – the latter showing no ill effects from her 18th birthday party the evening before battling to a tight 3-1 victory to put Surrey in touching distance of the title. West then stopped the rot with an emphatic 3-0 win against Emma Mathews at 4th string to raise Cheshire’s hopes, and they were raised even higher when Emily Whitlock efficiently despatched Nada El Kalaawy in the first string match. The tension on the gallery grew as the 2nd string players stepped on court, each hoping to be the heroine of the day. Harriet Ingham just took a close first game 11/7, but all credit to Rachel Chadwick who battled hard to level things 13/11 in the 2nd, but the effort in doing so gave Harriet a golden opportunity in the 3rd which she duly took winning 11/3. Ingham knew she had a tough task to win the next 2 games, but she worked extremely hard in the 4th and with her opponent tightening up looked as if she might take it, but Chadwick came through 11/8 to give Cheshire a richly deserved win to keep hold of the title for another season.

Isabelle Tweedle, Surrey 1st team captain, writes that the team last year were thrilled to achieve our best result for well over 25 years finishing runnersup......but this year the goal post had changed, and with a young and fast improving team, we were aiming for at least the final, and were generally “in it to win it”, rather than our usual aim of just trying to stay in the Premier division which comprises the top 8 counties. It is an incredibly young side, with the ages of the top 3 players totalling 58 years only!! Nada is just about to move out of the juniors having been crowned England junior U19 champion this year. Alison still has another year in the juniors and is already ranked in the top 6. A few years ago Harriet (in her fractionally younger years!) was also in the top couple of England ranked juniors.

SURREY CLOSED SQUASH CHAMPIONSHIPS 2014
Left: James Simpson and
Spectators at the Surrey Closed squash tournament were treated to an exciting final on 26th January at New Malden TS & B between James Simpson, from St. Georges Hill, and Phil Nightingale from Reigate. James easily won the first two games,11-5, 11-7, but Phil lifted his game for the rest of the match, and levelled the match 11-7, 11-6. The fifth and final game was a tussle from the word go - point for point - until it reached 10-10. Four match points were saved before James won 12-10 in the fifth to successfully defend his County crown for the second year running.

Equally exciting was the women’s final between Alison Thomson, from Colets, and Emma Mathews, from Ebbisham, which went the full distance. Emma took the first two games, 11-4, 11-6, but Alison fought back to take the next three games, 11-5, 11-3, 11-2 to win the County title.

INVALUABLE SERVICES
John Palmer
Former Surrey Cup players and members will be saddened to hear of the death of John Palmer recently. Twenty years service on the County Management Committee is no mean feat.Yet John Palmer served the County for that length of time. He joined the committee in 1967 and was immediately selected onto the sub-committee handling the Surrey Cup. The following year he took over the running of the County competition, and continued to do so for 14 years. He was in constant contact with an increasing number of clubs who wanted to enter teams into the league and under his stewardship grew from six divisions to eighteen. And in the last year of running the competition, 1982/3 season, he overseered the then structure from a vertical format to a premier section of four divisions with two parrallel and equal sections from division 5 and below. In that last season eleven new teams entered and John had seen the competition grow to 162 teams from 70 clubs which, even then, made it one of the biggest inter-league club competitions in the country.
Surrey Junior Squad in 1975 and remained a coach to the squad up until 1987. This commitment to Surrey was a ‘mere’ 12 years compared to 14 spent on the Surrey Cup. Tribute was paid by the then President of the County Association, Willie Lane, at the AGM on the 10th June, 1987 when he stated that John had made an inestimable contribution to County affairs. He pointed out that many players had come through the Junior Squad to reach international level. And he added that it was a fitting culmination of John’s achievements that the junior team had regained the U-19 inter-county championship title that season. He hoped that the admiration held by the Association for him would be conveyed to him at an appropriate occasion. John was subsequently presented with an inscribed decanter at a dinner in his honour. John clearly ‘put himself about’ on behalf of Surrey and made innumerable friends and acquaintances in the squash scene generally. In his letter to clubs, John asked for a ‘let’ after a long period in office. The writer, who knew him for some cosiderable time, awarded him point, game and match 9-0, 9-0, 9-0.
Whilst all this was going on John still had, or rather,
