  • Issue 18 Spring 2014
Issue 18 Spring 2014 WELCOME. Welcome to the HSSP spring newsletter for 2014 – a rather wet one! A belated Happy New Sporting Year to yourselves and your pupils and parents. Many thanks for your school and pupils continued support of P.E. and School Sport in 2013 and of the many teacher training programmes, coaching, volunteering, playing and competitive opportunities we offer your schools. Our primaries are currently delighted with the news that the government has extended the grant offer of the Primary P.E. Premium funding until to summer 2016, (initially it was for 2 years only). So this ring fenced funding £9000 approx. per academic year for every Primary School, and an Ofsted priority, will last for 3 academic years. Furthermore, the current government have promised, to further extend this same amount every year for every Primary School until 2020 as part of the Olympic legacy, if they get elected. The HSSP staff are busy visiting many primary schools offering advice and support to Head Teachers and P.E. Co-ordinators on how to action plan and improve: their P.E. curriculum and quality of teaching and learning for staff and pupils, the health and physical activity levels of less active pupils and sports club and competition opportunities for all pupils. We have 39 out of a possible 45 schools signed up to our services this year and we plan to continue our school sport services for primaries in the future. We are currently reviewing our pricing structure to ensure that we can continue to exist financially beyond summer 2016, as we receive no government funding to help contribute towards the salaries of SSCo’s.

  • SFA Case Study Orchards Academy
Inspiring the Future Case Study Orchards Academy Careers Talk Orchards Academy is a coeducational secondary school and sixth form with academy status, located in Swanley in the English county of Kent. The school also operates a vocational sixth form, where students have the option to study from a range of further BTECs. In its 2012 inspection Orchards academy was awarded a rating of 2, good, “Orchards Academy is a good and rapidly improving school. Students’ achievement has improved considerably since the previous inspection and is now good. GCSE results have risen substantially in recent years. Students throughout the school, including those who are disabled or who have special educational needs, make good progress from their starting points”1. Introduction to the event: The idea of the event was to help young people better understand apprenticeships. Research is consistent that young people’s knowledge of apprenticeships is often limited, especially in terms of how they can best prepare themselves to get onto one when they leave education. One of the best ways to give them access to such information is to give them the chance to hear directly from people in work with first-hand experience of apprenticeships. Students involved were age 14-15 years. How it worked We hosted an apprenticeships careers talk. Peter Cobrin volunteered through Inspiring the Future and delivered an interactive presentation on what an apprenticeship involved and how to apply for one. Peter is a leading educationalist and apprenticeships advocate, previously the director of Not Going to Uni, he set up Employment Pathways a “campaigning organisation working with employers, educators, training providers and policy makers to ensure that talent is given a chance in the workplace”2.

LBP0018 Written evidence submitted by The Northern Powerhouse Education Consortium Education Select Committee Left behind white pupils from disadvantaged backgrounds Inquiry SUBMISSION FROM THE NORTHERN POWERHOUSE EDUCATION CONSORTIUM Introduction and summary of recommendations Northern Powerhouse Education Consortium are a group of organisations with focus on education and disadvantage campaigning in the North of England, including SHINE, Northern Powerhouse Partnership (NPP) and Tutor Trust. This is a joint submission to the inquiry, acting together as ‘The Northern Powerhouse Education Consortium’. We make the case that ethnicity is a major factor in the long term disadvantage gap, in particular white working class girls and boys. These issues are highly concentrated in left behind towns and the most deprived communities across the North of England. In the submission, we recommend strong actions for Government in particular: o New smart Opportunity Areas across the North of England. o An Emergency Pupil Premium distribution arrangement for 2020-21, including reform to better tackle long-term disadvantage. o A Catch-up Premium for the return to school. o Support to Northern Universities to provide additional temporary capacity for tutoring, including a key role for recent graduates and students to take part in accredited training. About the Organisations in our consortium SHINE (Support and Help IN Education) are a charity based in Leeds that help to raise the attainment of disadvantaged children across the Northern Powerhouse. Trustees include Lord Jim O’Neill, also a co-founder of SHINE, and Raksha Pattni.
