2 1 CAMP DAVID MEMORABILIA

In addition to serving as a retreat for the President of the , Camp David was also the site of the famous meetings in September 1978 that resulted in the signing of the . Offered here are a 21-inch by 15-inch photo- graph of , Menachem Begin, and Anwar Sadat, signed by President Carter; a collection of six glasses emblazoned with the Camp David insignia; and a set of Camp David playing cards from the President Kennedy era. The cards feature a serene black-and-white picture of Aspen Lodge in winter, and the box is mint and unopened. You’ll also receive two laminated copies of President Carter’s handwritten notes from the Camp David meetings revealing the intense give-and-take dialog between Egyptian President Sadat and Israeli Prime Minister Begin. In 1970, Jacqueline Kennedy selected Aaron Shikler to paint the official White House portraits of her and her late husband, President John F. Kennedy. Shikler’s is the only official portrait of a president to be created after the subject’s death, and the artist used photographs for reference. A copy of the portrait can now be yours! 5 HERO’S PORTRAIT OF PRESIDENT CARTER

William Miles Krovchek fought for his country on Omaha Beach and served in the Battle of the Bulge. He received many medals for his service, including eight Bronze Stars, and was, in every sense, an American hero. Krovchek was also a talented artist with a passion for woodworking and painting landscapes. This portrait of President Carter is clearly a meaningful tribute from one proud American citizen to another. Fittingly, Krovchek, whose signature is on the back of the painting, died on Veterans Day, November 11, 2011.

8 MUSICIAN’S CHAIR

When master chairmaker Russ Filbeck was asked to make a chair suitable for playing musical instruments, such as guitars, ukuleles, and cellos, he decided to construct a second one for the Carter Center auction. He crafted the chair from cherry wood, added a woven hickory bark seat, and finished it with hand-rubbed oil and polished paste wax. The technique has been featured twice in articles titled “Russ Filbeck’s Award-Winning Oil Finish” and “Figure-popping Finish” in the September 2002 and December 2017/January 2018 issues of Wood Magazine.

11 DENG XIAOPING COLLECTIBLES

There are four items offered here relating to Deng Xiaoping, vice premier of the People’s Republic of China from the late 1970s to 1997. The first item is a signed photograph taken by photojournalist Michael Evans of President Carter and Deng Xiaoping upon their arrival at the White House for a state visit. The second item is a beautiful porcelain plate which was a gift from Deng Xiaoping’s daughter, Deng Rong, to the Carters during their trip to Beijing in December 2012. The design shows a Chinese sage seated in a garden with a tea set. It measures 10 ⅝ inches in diameter. Third, also from Deng, is a collection of 100 CDs that feature live performances of the Chinese Philharmonic Orchestra. The set was published in 2013 under the label “DR Classics.” The final item is a book that was presented to President Carter during a 2014 dinner in Beijing hosted by Deng and Mr. Wang Boming. The photography book is titled “Our Memories” and was created in celebration of the 35th anniversary of the normalization of U.S.-China relations.

6 12 OMANI KHANJAR

Khanjars are traditional daggers that are worn by Omani men on ceremonial occasions. They are also worn by men in Yemen and the United Arab Emirates. The importance of the khanjar is demonstrated by the fact that it appears on Oman’s flag. This one was given to President Carter during a 2014 trip to Dubai. The sheath of the dagger is curved with a floral pattern and has a horizontal band with a ring on each side. The khanjar is neatly displayed in a wood and glass frame.

13 CARTER T-SHIRT QUILT AND WHITE HOUSE SOFTBALL MEMORABILIA

A vintage t-shirt-collector’s dream! Multitalented Sarah Boddy, grand- daughter of Jody Powell, President Carter’s White House press secretary, created this treasured quilt using Jimmy Carter campaign t-shirts. On one side, 10 t-shirts alternate with navy blue squares. The other side is navy and green tartan. The quilt measures 67 inches by 56 inches.

Also included with this package is the jersey Jimmy Carter wore when he played softball with members of the Secret Service and news media during his administration. It has the White House seal on the front, “Mr. President” and the number 1 on the back, and is signed “Jimmy Carter” on the sleeve. Completing the collection are two vintage team t-shirts showing an illustration of the White House with a toothy grin, and a color photograph, dated August 1977, Plains, Ga., which is signed by Jimmy Carter and shows him on the mound preparing to throw a pitch.

Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck are featured in two original animation cels from Walt Disney Productions. In the first, from the 1952 animated short film titled “Pluto’s Christmas Tree,” Mickey, dressed in lumberjack attire, forcefully swings an ax, sending bits of wood flying around him. The framed item measures 11 ¾ inches by 10 inches. The cel with Donald Duck, from an unknown film, shows him dressed in his classic sailor suit (circa 1943–1945), and lying on his stomach. This image is displayed in an 11 ½-inch by 9 ½-inch frame.

Starting in 1975, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers were pioneers for the heartland rock movement. In 2017, during their stop at Philips Arena in Atlanta, Ga., band members Tom Petty, Ron Blair, Scott Thurston, Benmont Tench, Mike Campbell, and Steve Ferrone signed this Fender Stratocaster guitar. The tour celebrated the 40th anniversary of the group’s debut record and was their last with Petty, who passed away in October 2017, shortly after the band’s performance at the Hollywood Bowl.

23 USS PELELIU COLLECTION

The USS Peleliu is a Tarawa-class assault ship of the U.S. Navy and was deployed to the Persian Gulf on several occasions since entering service in 1980. This composition color print shows the contemporary assault amphibious ship with an image of American Marines landing at Peleliu during World War II, the battle for which USS Peleliu is named. Housed in a black frame, 15 ¼ inches high and 20 ¼ inches wide, the print also comes with two challenge coins. Additionally, attendees of the 2013 Winter Weekend can own a piece of memorabilia from the trip with a 17 ½-inch by 24-inch print of the group photograph taken aboard the USS Peleliu. 11 24 RALPH STEADMAN SILKSCREEN OF HUNTER S. THOMPSON

Renowned gonzo artist Ralph Steadman depicted his good friend Hunter S. Thompson in a number of his pieces. Here, you can choose one of two silkscreen prints for your collection. “Lono’s Fighting Chair” shows Thompson taking a nap in his fishing boat, despite the presence of a shark in the water on his left and the shadow of a vulture behind him. The print measures 22 inches by 30 inches. “Old Blue Eye” displays a caricature of Thompson with an elongated neck, a cigarette protruding from his lips, and one blue eye showing through his glasses. It measures 15 inches by 22 inches. Both pieces are silkscreened on white Rising Stonehenge deckle-edge paper and appear in Steadman’s book “The Joke’s Over.”

A unique collection for those who love fly-fishing! It begins with a copy of John Bryan’s book, “Take Me Fishing,” with a foreword by President Carter. Published in 2007, this book is numbered 89 of 100 Editor’s Edition presentation copies. The opening page includes an original watercolor painting by the author and his signature. It is accompanied by a recently published book, “America’s Favorite Flies” by John Bryan and Rob Carter that is leather-bound, signed, numbered and housed in an engraved oak slipcase. The book features a collection of stories, photographs, and favorite flies from 224 North American fly anglers, including President and Mrs. Carter. For the auction, President Carter handmade his favorite fly. It is handsomely framed in a shadow box showcasing the fly and the Carters’ participant pages from the book. The name of the fly, Black Ant, appears in Carter’s handwriting below the fly. The final item in this collection is a colorful vintage broadside containing Herbert Hoover’s quote “All Men Are Equal Before Fish” and the accompanying meditation. Hoover, 31st president of the United States, was also a fishing enthusiast and honed his skills in the lakes and streams of the Pacific Northwest where he grew up, just an hour from Skamania Lodge. Elvis Presley fans, here you are – three images of Presley in one large frame. One is a copy of a black-and-white photograph taken in 1977 that shows Presley meeting President and Mrs. Carter. The original photograph was signed by the Carters, and their signa- tures can be seen on the reprint. The second image is a 45 rpm single cover for Elvis’s “Jailhouse Rock,” featuring a picture of him and his original signature. A black-and- white photograph of Presley meeting President Richard Nixon in 1970 is the final image. An original signature of Nixon’s is included beneath the picture. On the back of the frame is a copy of a special private letter from Presley to Nixon detailing his admiration of the president and his desire to be made a federal agent.

71 HANDMADE PACIFIC NORTHWEST MOTIFS QUILTS

The winning bidder can choose one of two queen-sized quilts made by Suzanne McMahon, of Morganton, N. C., who has been making them for more than 28 years. The first is constructed of Bali Batik cotton and features a depiction of a Northwest Coast Native American-themed “transformation mask” like the ceremonial masks worn by Kwakiutl whale hunters. The design was created by Tim McMahon. The second quilt consists of Pacific Northwest Native American motifs in deep red, forest green, black, and white, with a stylized whale as the central feature. On each side of the square containing the whale are pinwheels and the eagle head and stars of The Carter Center’s logo. These are framed by a checkerboard pattern and outer border decorated with fish. Each quilt is valued at $880. The Carter Center has been involved in Nepal for several years, helping to steward its transition to democracy. In 2008, President Carter was awarded the Dr. Dilli Raman Regmi International Peace Award offered here. Given by the Nepalese Ministry of Education, the framed award is displayed in a stunning, elaborate, hand-carved wooden frame. This package also includes a framed reprint of the front page of The Kathmandu Post dated April 11, 2008. Reporting on the Constituent Assembly election that The Carter Center observed and President Carter attended, the headline reads, “Nepal stuns world, itself / Poll peaceful, turnout 60 pc.” After returning from the moni- toring mission, President Carter wrote in his trip report, “Of the 70 elections that have been monitored by our Center, this was the most transformational.” The framed reprint measures 23 ½ inches by 15 inches.

In 1997 Sethu Narikot used an image of Mahatma Created from an original painting by artist Charles Funk, Gandhi as the subject of a collagraph. In 2002, President Jimmy Carter visited Cuba to champion human rights. During the trip, President Fidel Castro invited him to the 2002 Cuban all-star game. Items offered here commemorate the game and are all signed by Carter. First is a bat with “Cuban All Star Game – 2002, Jimmy Carter” written on it. A red Cuban baseball cap, with the phrase “Cuban all-star game 5/02, J. Carter” under the bill, is next. 1. President Carter created “Stein and Pot” in October 2008. The original oil painting is 20 inches by 16 inches and shows a stein, pot, candlestick, and several other items on a table against a blue background. President Carter remarks that when composing still life paintings, he enjoys selecting items from Rosalynn’s kitchen and adding an additional item or altering the light to create a new perspective on the objects. The painting is signed “Carter.” 2. Two bobwhite quail are shown, with small branches in the background, against a blue Georgia sky in President Carter’s “Bobwhite Quail.” Having grown up on a farm, President Carter holds a deep appreciation of nature and began iden- tifying and recording birds on a trip to Tanzania in 1988. Since then he has listed more than 1,300 species during his travels. Created in November 2012, this oil-on-canvas painting measures 24 inches by 18 inches and is signed “Carter” in the lower right corner. 3. President Carter painted “Rachel and Cotton” in April 2016. This oil-on-canvas painting measures 24 inches by 30 inches and is signed “Carter.” In it Rachel Clark, an influential figure from Carter’s childhood, is seen walking beside a field of cotton.
