2013 BVDC Fun Day at Eden Valley Farm, Spring City, PA Saturday, August 17th

The theme of this year’s Fun Day will be Rock n’ Roll Drive

Time to get creative! Dress up yourself AND your horse as a Rock n’ Roller! As we did last year, this fun drive will again be the scavenger hunt format. We will suggest web sites for 50s, 60s, 70s songs and bands for people to brush up on the looks and sounds and names of that era. At least a few of us transcend that era and have good memories! Of course the drive, the picnic, and the friendship of fellow drivers will be the most important reasons for people to come! You don’t have to be in costume to join in the fun! Here are some of the activities being planned:  Prizes - for the best costumes and decorated carriages  Scavenger hunt - participants will be given a sheet of paper containing questions and the "clues" to the answers posted at random points on the  Cones practice course Rumor has it that a KISS  Tailgate picnic lunch impersonator and KISS horse will Time: 10:00 am - 2:00 pm be on the premises that day! SAVE the DATE for this annual BVDC Event!

When: Sunday, Oct 27th; “on foot” clinic on Saturday, Oct 26th

Where: Fair Hill NRMA off Gallaher Rd

Competitors and Volunteers Please note that Teddy Bears Picnic is the same weekend as Garden State CDE this year. Based on past entries, only a few competitors drive both events but this year you will have to choose between the two. Untold hours have been spent by both shows to find another solution, but there was none for 2013. Since we want to keep both shows this year, and there is not much overlap in competitors, we are hoping this will be a really rich driving weekend for every level and discipline from Advanced CDEers to TBP Trotters! Be assured that for 2014 and beyond we are working on a solution to avoid this date conflict again.

BVDC Novice Driver Clinic with Lore Homer At Chapter One Farms, Pedricktown, NJ Saturday, June 8th

The novice driver clinic with professional instructor Lore Homer was a great success according to all the clinic participants! We ended up with 5 drivers and 2 auditors. This number of drivers was small enough to allow flexibility with the schedule and individual, customized instruction for each participant in a relaxed atmosphere. The clinic started at 10:00 AM with everyone gathered around having breakfast and listening to Lore talk about various turnout topics which generated lots of good questions from the audience. Lore shared her turnout advice based on many successful years in the show ring.

Lore Homer, our clinic instructor: expert whip, recognized judge and very successful show ring career.

After the turnout talk, Lore reviewed proper harnessing technique from start to finish, demonstrating visually with two of the participants’ horses. Then everyone left to go harness up their own horses and return for the driving instruction phase of the clinic. Sometimes there was only one driver in the arena, although at times there were two or three. There was no fixed schedule, so drivers could come and go as they wished, which seemed to work out very well. Lunch was available for everyone whenever they could take a break. Participants listen to Lore Homer talk about turnout at the beginning of the clinic. Due to the intermittent showers during the clinic and the soggy ground from heavy rain the day before, everyone was glad the clinic was held in an indoor arena! Helene Paxton was a wonderful host as always - offering stalls for the participants’ horses and assisting Lore with the logistics, keeping the clinic flowing smoothly.

After the clinic ended in mid-afternoon, I spoke with all of the participants to get their feedback - every one of them felt this had been time and money well-spent because they had learned something new that was a valuable take-away.

We would like to especially thank long-time club member Lore Homer for graciously donating her time for this clinic, sharing her rich experience and expert knowledge with all of us!

Devon Horse Show, cont’d

On Sunday, 5/26 and Monday, 5/27, my friend Zana White and I competed in the Devon Horse Show. We were in the Pleasure Driving Pony division, and competed in the marathon Pleasure Drive on Sunday and in the Pleasure Pony Turnout class and the Scurry or cones class on Monday evening. Our good friend Lynn Watts from the Brass Ring Riding Club joined us as a groom on Sunday and helper on Monday. Thank goodness for Lynn! We couldn’t have done it without her! We all had a fabulous time! Every local horsewoman dreams of showing at the Gemma and Isaiah standing for the judge (or trying to). Even after an almost 6 mile drive he still had plenty of Devon Horse Show. I never thought I would have energy! Photo by Deb Grothmann the opportunity to, or thought it would be in the driving division. It was a blast and a half, and everything I’d imagined it would be!

In the Monday night cones class, Isaiah and I nearly won sixth place! We would have had it, except that I came through the last gate at the wrong angle and knocked a ball off and incurred a time penalty. Oh, well…. Next year!! But it was completely worth the price of admission. The experience and memories will last a lifetime. Isaiah enjoyed the crowd, who lavished much attention on him. We dubbed him “The Sweetheart of Devon.” Zana said if we were judged on cuteness, we would have won! Submitted by Gemma Pagliei

Glen Willow CDE Returns!

After a successful inaugural event in 2012, the Glen Willow CDE returns on September 6-8, 2013 to the former site of The Laurels in Avondale, Pa. Thank you to all the members of the BVDC who helped to make that happen! The format will remain the same – classes are offered for Training through Advanced level, with Training level doing only Section E of the marathon. A new obstacle is being constructed with a railroad theme in place of the old sawmill obstacle that threatened to disintegrate during last year’s marathon! A few updates to the other obstacles are being planned. The grounds are in the capable hands of Newt Brosius. Richard Pringle is designing the course, with Richard Nicoll gating the obstacles and designing the cones course. The decision last year to take the bridge out of play and use it as a viewing opportunity for spectators proved to be very popular – people could watch both water obstacles up close. Inviting all spectators to use the big tent was also popular. Thanks to many hours put in by many people, the grounds looked fantastic. Much needed repairs were made, mowing started in early summer and didn’t stop until moments before the start of the event. The organizing committee consists of Lisa Stroud, Ann Pringle, Newt Brosius, Dan Rosenthal and Lisa Singer, joined by Debby Donovan, Louisa Emerick, Bobbi Hager, Meredith Fetters, Claire Glenn, Martha Makenna and Bruce Rappaport and of course many wonderful volunteers. All are committed to providing great competition in a friendly environment. Complete information can be found in the Omnibus of the American Driving Society, but here are some highlights: Dates: September 6-8, 2013 Officials:Judges: Peter Bonhof (NED), Anne Marie Turbe (FRA), Francois Bergeron (USA), Debbie Banfield (USA), Emery Hinkley (USA); Technical Delegate: Ian Douglas (GBR); Course Designer: Richard Nicoll (USA), Assistant Course Designer: Richard Pringle (USA). Scorer: Richard Pringle. Other key personnel: Secretary and Show Manager: Ann Pringle; Announcer: Geoff Morgan; Radios and Safety Officer: Jon Paul Beauchamp; Volunteers: Bobbi Hager. Grounds: Newt Brosius, Ron Palmer. Clerk of : Lisa Singer. Clerk of Marathon: Richard Pringle. Levels: Training, Preliminary, Intermediate, Advanced. The FEI has given approval for Glen Willow to be a qualifying event for Single Horses, Four-in Hands of horses, and Single, Pair and Four-in-Hands of . We invite all to come, compete, volunteer, support (financially or in-kind), spectate, participate in the Trade Fair or all of the above! Gladstone Driving Clinic Series

The Gladstone Equestrian Association (GEA) is back on mission, helping drivers grow to develop the sport of carriage driving, and we are taking it seriously. This summer we are offering five clinics providing top level instruction to drivers at all levels at Hamilton Farms Pine Meadow facility in Gladstone, NJ. The added benefit is that the clinics will also help fund needed infrastructure repairs to the Pine Meadow facility.

The clinic on July 28th features Tracey Morgan from Bealsville, MD. Tracey has competed singles, pairs and even a 4-in-hand in the US up to the National level as well as having competed on the US Squad at several World Pony Championships. Tracey is well known for her Dartmoors and has recently been competing Jennifer Sim’s Morgan stallion “Declaration” and her German Riding Pony “Fuego” at the advanced and FEI levels. Tracey will work with drivers on their individual goals. Pine Meadow offers the opportunity to work in the dressage ring on basic driving to driven dressage or cones. There are also nearby marathon obstacles that can be used to work on the cross country aspects of .

The clinic offers 45 minute sessions for a fee of $90 for the driver/navigator team.

You will need to fill out the USET-F Biosecurity form. More information and the form are available at this link: http://www.uset.org/viewarticle.php?id=467

Auditors are welcome, but there is no sound system planned at this time.

We do ask attendees to consider a donation toward the Infrastructure Repair Fund. Contact Gayle Stinson [email protected] or by phone at 908-453-3332 or cell phone at 908-752-2653 to sign up or get on the list for additional clinic information as it becomes available.

ADS Mid-Atlantic Recreational Drive (MARD) A weekend of recreational driving in beautiful Fair Hill, MD Thu Oct 31 – Sun Nov 3, 2013

Registration packets will be posted on the ADS website's mid-Atlantic region this summer.

TREC at the Mid-Atlantic Regional Drive

We are going to have a TREC event at the Mid-Atlantic Regional Drive this fall which should be a lot of fun! A TREC is a driving activity that takes its origin from informal and skills competitions in France that were modified for carriage driving by the British Driving Society. TREC as developed by the BDS is a very informal competition, ideal for the recreational driver, with similarities to Pleasure Driving obstacle-games and Combined Diving marathon and obstacle-cones competitions, but with greatly reduced, or eliminated formality, dress codes, volumes of pre- event information, regulation and volunteer requirements. The event consists of three phases: (1) a safety check, (2) a timed ~5K cross-country drive on trails and paths, and (3) a series of skills tests. Each phase is scored, but there is no elimination! The goals of TREC are safety, horsemastership, fellowship, versatility, and respect for the countryside. A number of driving clubs in the Pacific Northwest have pioneered this activity in the US, and just recently the American Driving Society has decided to list it in their Recreational Drives handbook. A great website for information on TREC is at www.wayoutwestminis.com/aNewDrivingStarTREC.htm

I (Ann Sutherland) am in charge of getting the MARD TREC activity organized, and wanted to solicit volunteers to help out at the actual event. We'll need a minimum of about 6, and more would be better depending on how many turnouts will be participating. We need people to be watching along the course, and judging the skills tests, and we need at least one experienced safety-checker to lead the safety check phase. Being unfamiliar with Fair Hill, I could also use some help in planning the driving route, so anyone with familiarity with Fair Hill driving trails that could give some advice is encouraged to contact me! If you would like to volunteer, please contact me either by email at [email protected], or by phone (434-825-2023) and let me know. Many thanks, and I hope to see you there!
