Miller-Digging in Press Release Press & radio release Bio information: Phil Miller Cuneiform Records is proud to announce the release of Digging In, by Phil Miller (Cuneiform Records Rune 34). Digging In is Phil Miller's third solo release. Phil Miller started composing & playing guitar in 1968. His first group was Delivery, with whom he cut a record in 1971. Also playing in Delivery were Steve Miller (later of Caravan), Roy Babbington (Soft Machine), & Pip Pyle (Gong). In late 1971, Phil helped to found Matching Mole with noted drummer & vocalist Robert Wyatt. They recorded 2 lps: Matching Mole & Little Red Record. After the break-up of Matching Mole, Phil joined forces with Dave Stewart, Richard Sinclair (Caravan), & Pip Pyle to form Hatfield & The North. Hatfield were exceedingly popular, & cut 2 successful lps for Virgin in the mid 70's; Hatfield & The North & The Rotter's Club. Hatfield & The North later evolved into National Health, with whom Phil recorded National Health, Of Queues & Cures, & D.S. Al Coda. Since the dissolution of National Health, Phil has been refining his playing & compositional abilities even further, cutting two discs [Cutting Both Ways (Cuneiform) and Split Seconds (Reckless)] that feature a mixture of his work with his current band In Cahoots & his more studio-oriented solo work. Digging In is the first release to solely feature Phil's MIDI/studio oriented work. In addition to Phil, also appearing are drummer Pip Pyle, keyboardist Peter Lemer (who has played with Mike Oldfield and In Cahoots), & bassist Fred Baker (of In Cahoots). The stellar musical company appearing with Phil on Digging In will prove an extra treat for fans & new listeners alike. Of most importance, however, are the compositions themselves as played by these choice musicians. They show Phil at his best: intricate jazz-inflected tunes ripe with his unique melodies, passionate soloing, & expert use of rhythm. We are mailing promotional copies of Digging In to radio stations as well as to print media & journalists known for their interest & support of new, independent music. Please be sure to send any playlists or press clippings to us. .

  • Bibliografia Canterbury Ridotta

The Relatives & Phil Miller Virtually 43:42 Relatives Records 2013 www.relativesrecords.com Anyone like myself who still follows the fortunes of the epic splendours of the Canterbury scene with unrestrained passion, will revel in this delightful work which features Phil Miller (a permanent fixture of this British quintet) as well as the guest appearance of Richard Sinclair in its intense conclusion, On My Mind. Actually, within the group there’s another member who should be familiar to Canterbury conaisseurs: Jack Monck, an excellent bassist with a gift for jazzy vocalisation – featuring in the original line‐up of Delivery with Steve and Phil Miller and the late Pip Pyle as well as heading Inside the Whale, a very interesting CD released in 2001 with the collaboration of the aforementioned Pip Pyle. Virtually unfolds over eight well‐constructed tracks of authentic passion and commitment. Out of this emerges the horn, which reveals Marc Hadley (together with Monck) as a genuine band‐leader. The sax stamps Marc’s identity on most of the tracks as well as the bassist’s (with the exception of the jazzy Stately Waltz, bearing the signature of keyboard player Willem Jan Droog) but everything is supported by the very precise drumming of Damian Rodd. Going Down, the first track ‐ with its jazz‐soul flavour, reminiscent of Donald Fagen‐ opens with wonderful aplomb by the great Phil who erupts with his typical guitar sound ‘borderline’ between rock and jazz to create a dialogue with Hadley’s robust, full‐blooded sax. A really great piece. However this is not to take away from Leading the Fight, a typical Monck composition with its delicate reverberations, distinctly ‘canterburian’ in style, in which is heard Miller’s sumptuous acoustic accompaniment and the excellent flute playing of the leader.

  • Varsity Jazz
Varsity Jazz Jazz at Reading University 1951 - 1984 By Trevor Bannister 1 VARSITY JAZZ Jazz at Reading University 1951 represented an important year for Reading University and for Reading’s local jazz scene. The appearance of Humphrey Lyttelton’s Band at the University Rag Ball, held at the Town Hall on 28th February, marked the first time a true product of the Revivalist jazz movement had played in the town. That it should be the Lyttelton band, Britain’s pre-eminent group of the time, led by the ex-Etonian and Grenadier Guardsman, Humphrey Lyttelton, made the event doubly important. Barely three days later, on 3rd March, the University Rag Committee presented a second event at the Town Hall. The Jazz Jamboree featured the Magnolia Jazz Band led by another trumpeter fast making a name for himself, the colourful Mick Mulligan. It would be the first of his many visits to Reading. Denny Dyson provided the vocals and the Yew Tree Jazz Band were on hand for interval support. There is no further mention of jazz activity at the university in the pages of the Reading Standard until 1956, when the clarinettist Sid Phillips led his acclaimed touring and broadcasting band on stage at the Town Hall for the Rag Ball on 25th February, supported by Len Lacy and His Sweet Band. Considering the intense animosity between the respective followers of traditional and modern jazz, which sometimes reached venomous extremes, the Rag Committee took a brave decision in 1958 to book exponents of the opposing schools. The Rag Ball at the Olympia Ballroom on 20th February, saw Ken Colyer’s Jazz Band, which followed the zealous path of its leader in keeping rigidly to the disciplines of New Orleans jazz, sharing the stage with the much cooler and sophisticated sounds of a quartet led by Tommy Whittle, a tenor saxophonist noted for his work with the Ted Heath Orchestra.

  • Gruppo È Nella Classica Formazione in Quartetto Con Elton Dean, Mike Ratledge, Hugh Hopper E Robert Wyatt
