Although the areas of Old Master drawings, early British drawings and watercolours, 19th Century and Modern drawings have long been regarded as disparate fields, part of the purpose of this annual catalogue is to blur the distinction between these collecting areas.

  • DUTCH and ENGLISH PAINTINGS Seascape Gallery 1600 – 1850
DUTCH AND ENGLISH PAINTINGS Seascape Gallery 1600 – 1850 The art and ship models in this station are devoted to the early Dutch and English seascape painters. The historical emphasis here explains the importance of the sea to these nations. Historical Overview: The Dutch: During the 17th century, the Netherlands emerged as one of the great maritime oriented empires. The Dutch Republic was born in 1579 with the signing of the Union of Utrecht by the seven northern provinces of the Netherlands. Two years later the United Provinces of the Netherlands declared their independence from the Spain. They formed a loose confederation as a representative body that met in The Hague where they decided on issues of taxation and defense. During their heyday, the Dutch enjoyed a worldwide empire, dominated international trade and built the strongest economy in Europe on the foundation of a powerful merchant class and a republican form of government. The Dutch economy was based on a mutually supportive industry of agriculture, fishing and international cargo trading. At their command was a huge navy and merchant fleet of fluyts, cargo ships specially designed to sail through the world, which controlled a large percentage of the international trade. In 1595 the first Dutch ships sailed for the East Indies. The Dutch East Indies Company (the VOC as it was known) was established in 1602 and competed directly with Spain and Portugal for the spices of the Far East and the Indian subcontinent. The success of the VOC encouraged the Dutch to expand to the Americas where they established colonies in Brazil, Curacao and the Virgin Islands.

  • (1802-1834) Chapter 1 Harriet Martineau Grows up in Norwich
Part 1 Early Life and Celebrity (1802-1834) Chapter 1 Harriet Martineau Grows Up in Norwich (1802-1819) When Harriet (the Martineaus’ sixth child) was born on 12 June 1802, Thomas’s Spanish trade was suffering from the effects of the Napoleonic wars, and the family moved from Gurney Court across Magdalen Street to a plain, three-story brick house.1 There, carts could pass through an arched passage from Magdalen Street to Thomas’s warehouse off Boswell’s Court. Utilitarian sheds bordered a planting strip where the Martineau children made gardens and where Harriet and James once tried to dig to China but as somber Victorian children decided instead to make a “grave” to test the feeling of being dead. Harriet Martineau’s autobiography, completed in 1855 when she thought she was dying, cites similar grim incidents from her childhood. Yet the Martineau family enjoyed games and carefree occasions--the girls had hoops and all played at battledore and cards. On special days Thomas let the children play among the bolts of cloth in his warehouse (Harriet remembered with anguish running off to play hide-and-seek and leaving behind her childhood friend who had lost a leg). Another traumatic moment for Harriet arose when the family climbed to the long-windowed room, built originally for weavers, to gaze at a rare comet. Strangely, the anxious nine-year-old Harriet could not see it.2 The accomplishments of Norwich writers and artists of the early nineteenth century like William Taylor--a respected scholar and translator of German literary works--or the painters John Sell Cotman and John Crome scarcely touched Thomas Martineau’s family.

  • The Shepherd on the Hill: Comparative Notes on English and German Romantic Landscape Painting 1810-1831
The Shepherd on the Hill: Comparative Notes on English and German Romantic Landscape Painting 1810-1831. Conference paper Conference: ‘Romantic Correspondences’, The Centre for Regional Cultures, University of Nottingham and Nottingham Trent University, Newstead Abbey. Date: 4 November 2005 Abstract The solitary figure in the landscape can be understood in relation to certain, fundamentally Romantic traits – solitude, contemplation, oneness with nature – and is most notably found in the work of Caspar David Friedrich. Less recognised however is the fact that the solitary figure can also be found in the landscape paintings of many English artists of the early nineteenth century, particularly within depictions of commonly held pastoral landscapes. Within the traditional terms of English art history, the landscape genre of this period has also been closely associated with the concept of Romanticism. This paper will study the use of the solitary figure in paintings of open, common field landscape, and will compare two paintings: Caspar David Friedrich’s ‘Landscape with Rainbow (The Shepherd’s Complaint)’ of 1810, and John Sell Cotman’s ‘The Shepherd on the Hill’ of 1831. It will examine the more conventional Romantic resonances of Friedrich’s painting in order to question whether Cotman’s shepherd is a comparative example of Romantic solitude and contemplation, or whether it was more of a prosaic image of a typically English ‘rustic type’ at a time when a particular sense of national identity was emerging that was closely associated with the countryside and country life. From there, it is hoped that we can begin to reconsider the conventional Romantic image of English landscape painting in the first three decades of the nineteenth century.

  • The Suffolk Institute of Archaeology
THE SUFFOLKINSTITUTE OF ARCHAEOLOGY: ITS LIFE, TIMESANDMEMBERS by STEVENJ. PLUNKETT The one remains —the many change and pass' (Shelley) 1: ROOTS THE SUFFOLKINSTITUTE of Archaeology and History had its birth 150 years ago, in the spring of 1848, under the title of The Bury and West Suffolk Archaeological Institute. It is among the earliest of the County Societies, preceded only by Northamptonshire and Lincolnshire (1844), Norfolk (1846), and the Cambrian, Bedfordshire, Sussex and Buckinghamshire Societies (1847), and contemporary with those of Lancashire and Cheshire. Others, equally successful, followed, and it is a testimony to the social and intellectual timeliness of these foundations that most still flourish and produce Proceedingsdespite a century and a half of changing approaches to the historical and antiquarian materials for the study of which they were created. The immediate impetus to this movement was the formation in December 1843 of the British ArchaeologicalAssociationfor the Encouragementand Preservationof Researchesinto the Arts ancl Monumentsof theEarly and MiddleAges, which in March 1844 produced the first number of the ArchaeologicalJ ournal. The first published members' list, of 1845, shows the members grouped according to the counties in which they lived, indicating the intention that the Association should gather information from, and disseminate discourses into, the counties through a national forum. The thirty-six founding members from Suffolk form an interesting group from a varied social spectrum, including the collector Edward Acton (Grundisburgh), Francis Capper Brooke (Ufford), John Chevallier Cobbold, Sir Thomas Gery Cullum of Hawstead, David Elisha Davy, William Stevenson Fitch, the Ipswich artists Fred Russel and Wat Hagreen, Professor Henslow, Alfred Suckling, Samuel Tyrnms, John Wodderspoon, the Woodbridge geologist William Whincopp, Richard Almack, and the Revd John Mitford (editor of Gentleman'sMagazine).

  • The Norwich School of Lithotomy
THE NORWICH SCHOOL OF LITHOTOMY by A. BATTY SHAW A NOTABLE cHAPTER in the long history of human bladder stone has been contributed from Norwich and its county of Norfolk and this came about for several reasons. The main reason was that Norfolk enjoyed the unenviable reputation during the latter part of the eighteenth and throughout the nineteenth centuries of having the highest incidence of bladder stone among its inhabitants of any county in Great Britain. As a result of thishigh prevalence ofbladderstone a local tradition of surgical skill in the art of lithotomy emerged and when the first general hospital in Norfolk, the Norfolk and Norwich Hospital was founded in 1771-2 there were appointed to its surgical staff local surgeons who were most experienced lithotomists. Their skill was passed on to those who followed them and earned for the hospital a European reputation for its standards of lithotomy. Sir Astley Cooper" when at the height of his professional fame and influence in 1835 spoke of these standards as follows, 'the degree of success which is considered most correct [for lithotomy] is that taken from the results of the cases at the Norfolk and Norwich Hospital'.2 There were not only able lithotomists on the early staff of the Norfolk and Norwich Hospital but also physicians who wrote on the medical aspects of bladder stone with special reference to the problems of incidence and chemical analysis. These writings were based on the registers of admissions to the hospital which were kept from the hospital's inception. The keeping of a hospital register was an uncommon practice at the turn of the eighteenth century as is revealed by Alexander Marcet3 in a mono- graph on calculous disease of the urinary tract which he published in 1817.

  • After the Norwich School
After the Norwich School This book takes, as its starting point, sites that feature in paintings, or prints, made by Norwich School artists. For each site I have photographed a contemporary landscape scene. My aim was not to try to replicate the scene painted in the 1800s, but simply to use that as the point where I would take the photograph, thus producing a picture of Norwich today. IMPORTANT This ebook has been produced as part of my studies with OCA for the landscape photography module of my Creative Arts degree course. It is not set to be published, but simply to allow my tutors, assessors and fellow students to see, judge and comment on my work. I am grateful that Norfolk Museums Service allow images to be downloaded for such educational use and I am pleased to credit © Norfolk Museums Service for each of the Norwich School painters images that I have used Robert Coe OCAStudent ID 507140 Proof Copy: Not optimised for high quality printing or digital distribution View on the River Wensum After 'View on the River Wensum, King Street, Norwich' by John Thirtle (1777-1839), pencil and watercolour on paper, undated; 25.8 cm x 35.2 cm © Norfolk Museums Service Proof Copy: Not optimised for high quality printing or digital distribution Proof Copy: Not optimised for high quality printing or digital distribution Proof Copy: Not optimised for high quality printing or digital distribution Briton's Arms, Elm Hill After 'Briton's Arms' by Henry Ninham (1793-1874), watercolour on paper, © Norfolk Museums Service Proof Copy: Not optimised for high
