Objectives: The students will become familiar with the meanings of the terms, Episcopal, Anglican, Communion (as referring to the larger church), ethos, standing committee, presiding bishop and general convention. The students will understand the meaning of the “Four Instruments of Unity:” The Archbishop of Canterbury; the Meeting of Primates; the Lambeth Conference of Bishops; and, the Anglican Consultative Council. The students will encounter the various levels of structure and governance in which we live as Episcopalians and Anglicans. The students will learn of and appreciate an outline of our history in the context of Anglicanism. The students will see themselves as part of a worldwide communion of fellowship and mission as Christians together with others from throughout the globe. The students will read and discuss the “Chicago-Lambeth Quadrilateral” (BCP pages 876 – 877) in order to appreciate the essentials of an Anglican identity. Church in Wales Review July 2012 The September 2010 meeting of the Governing Body was notable for the number of contributions from members with a common message: “The Church in Wales cannot go on doing the same things in the same way; some things need to change and we are open to – and indeed encourage – that possibility”. The Standing Committee and Bench of Bishops responded to this call by appointing an external review of the Church, with particular reference to its structures and use of resources, to increase the effectiveness of the Church’s ministry and witness. The Review Group’s members are prominent thinkers with a blend of experience in dealing with matters ecclesiastical and organisational: Lord Harries of Pentregarth, the former Bishop of Oxford; Professor Charles Handy, the eminent writer and adviser on business and organisational theory (and son of a Church of Ireland archdeacon); and Professor Patricia Peattie, former Convenor of the Scottish Episcopal Church’s Standing Committee and the first chairwoman of the Lothian University Hospitals NHS Trust. The aim was to commission a review that could move quickly to gather and assimilate information about the state of the Church in Wales, then provide independent advice on how the Church might reshape itself to be more effective in the twenty-first century. Given the extent of its members’ other commitments, the Review Group has pursued its task with extraordinary vigour and dedication. The Group determined its own approach and programme. It has visited every diocese in Wales, meeting with the Bishop and Diocesan team in each and holding an open meeting for Church members to express their views. -

DOING THE LAMBETH WALK The request We, the Bishops, Clergy and Laity of the Province of Canada, in Triennial Synod assembled, desire to represent to your Grace, that in consequence of the recent decisions of the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council in the well-known case respecting the Essays and Reviews, and also in the case of the Bishop of Natal and the Bishop of Cape Town, the minds of many members of the church have been unsettled or painfully alarmed; and that doctrines hitherto believed to be scriptural, undoubtedly held by the members of the Church of England and Ireland, have been adjudicated upon by the Privy Council in such a way as to lead thousands of our brethren to conclude that, according to this decision, it is quite compatible with membership in the Church of England to discredit the historical facts of Holy Scripture, and to disbelieve the eternity of future punishment1 So began the 1865 letter from the Canadians to Charles Thomas Longley, Archbishop of Canterbury and Primate of All England. The letter concluded In order, therefore, to comfort the souls of the faithful, and reassure the minds of wavering members of the church, … we humbly entreat your Grace, …to convene a national synod of the bishops of the Anglican Church at home and abroad, who, attended by one or more of their presbyters or laymen, learned in ecclesiastical law, as their advisers, may meet together, and, under the guidance of the Holy Ghost, take such counsel and adopt such measures as may be best fitted to provide for the present distress in such synod, presided over by your Grace. -

The attribution to David I of the establishment of most of the Scottish episcopal sees has, if only through repetition, become a convention. Yet, while historians have bee generan ni l agreement about David's work, they have differed profoundly as to the details. A very recent writer has gone so far as to remark, "Before David's time St Andrews was the only bishopric Scotlann i d proper addedmorr e o h ; x esi probably eight." 1 Other modern historians have allowe r thredo thao e tw tsee s were founde e reigth nn i d of David's predecessor, Alexander I.2 The older historians and chroniclers were less confident about the extent of David's work. Boece attributed to Davi foundatioe dth onlf no y four bishoprics addition i , previouslx si o nt y existing,3 and he was followed by George Buchanan.4 John Major says of David, "Finding four bishoprics in his kingdom, he founded nine more." 8 Two versions of Wyntoun, again, tell each a different story: Bischopriki fan e t thresh dbo ; deite Both . i lefr x ,o he ,t Or Bischopis he fande bot foure or thre; Bot, or he deit, ix left he.6 This confusion might have suggested tha e conventioth t n requires critical examination. The Church of Ireland Response to the Draft Covenant
THE CHURCH OF IRELAND RESPONSE TO THE DRAFT ANGLICAN COVENANT PART ONE INTRODUCTION This Church of Ireland response to the Anglican Draft Covenant was prepared by a small drafting group comprised of those who were, or had been, elected members of ACC and those who had been much involved in ecumenical affairs on behalf of the Church of Ireland. The preliminary discussion centred on whether the idea of a Covenant was to be supported, or whether something much simpler was required, such as a common statement. Two previous Church of Ireland responses within the Windsor process had shown somewhat different emphases in relation to this issue. However it soon emerged that there was within the drafting group, a general willingness to support the Covenant concept. The drafting group decided that rather than make a line by line response to the Draft Covenant, it would use it as a basis for the construction of what it was felt would be an acceptable form of Covenant. A new drafting for a Covenant was then discussed at a full meeting of the drafting group and the Bishops of the Church of Ireland. It received a very positive response with a few minor suggestions which were easily incorporated. The Standing Committee of the General Synod, representative of the clergy and laity of every diocese then passed the response. The thinking behind the Church of Ireland re-drafting could be listed as threefold: 1. A Covenant should express very clearly the themes of Mutual Responsibility and Interdependence within the Body of Christ; 2. A Covenant should aim, insofar as possible, to be inclusive; 3. -

Monday 10 November 2014 Bishop Ted Luscombe celebrates his 90th Birthday today. Bishop Ted was Bishop of Brechin 1975-90 and Primus of the Scottish Episcopal Church 1985-90. He ordained our current Bishop Nigel as Deacon and Priest in St Paul’s Cathedral Dundee 1976/77. Sunday 23 November 2014 Bishop Nigel will be Licencing the Reverend Tracy Dowling as Chaplain (Assistant Curate) of St Paul’s Cathedral Dundee at the 11am Cathedral Eucharist for the Feast of Christ the King, together with Carole Spink who will be Admitted and Licenced as a Reader. Tracy comes from the Merton Priory Team Ministry in south London after a career with HMRC. Carole is completing her training at the Scottish Episcopal Institute and will also serve at the Cathedral. Tuesday 25 November 2014 The Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, is making a visit to the Dundee Centre of Mission St Luke’s Downfield, Dundee on Tuesday morning. The Centre, launched this September, is a partnership between the Diocese and Church Army, aiming to pioneer fresh ways of doing church for the unchurched. The Archbishop will meet local people connected with the project, Craig Dowling, Pioneer Evangelist and the Reverend Kerry Dixon, Priest Missioner. Bishop Nigel will welcome the Archbishop to our diocese and the Primus, Bishop David Chillingworth who is hosting the Archbishop during his visit to the Scottish Episcopal Church. Friday 28 November 2014 Bishop Nigel is attending the Abertay University winter Graduation Ceremony in the Caird Hall Dundee in his capacity as a Governor and Member of the University Court. -

The Governance and Organisation of the Church of Ireland WHO ARE WE? The Church of Ireland belongs to the world- wide church known as the Anglican Communion. The Anglican church across the world has over 80 million members in over 160 countries. The Church of Ireland is an Episcopal church, which means that it is governed by a body of bishops. In the USA the Anglican church is known as the Episcopal Church. WHERE DID WE COME FROM? The Church of Ireland is so named as it covers the whole island of Ireland and until 1870 was the established church in Ireland - established by an act of parliament. As such it had a privileged position and was supported and financed by every citizen in the land irrespective of their religious affiliation. In 1870 the Church was DISESTABLISHED and since then has been fully independent of status and state support. WHO’S THE BOSS? The Most Rev. A.E.T. Harper, O.B.E., B.A. - is the head of the Church of Ireland and is known as the Primate of All Ireland. St. Patrick’s Cathedral, Armagh Armagh is the ecclesiastical (or church) capital of Ireland ever since St Patrick set up his headquarters there in the fifth century. Thus the Cathedral there is dedicated to St Patrick. 1 How is the Church organised? The Economic Problems ofthe See of York: Decline and Recovery in the Sixteenth Century By CLAIRE CROSS A LEGEND has long persisted that the temporalities of the see of York suffered disastrously at the time of the Reformation through spoliation by the crown. Unembellished evidence confirms that in the decade between 1536 and 1546 Archbishops Edward Lee and Robert Holgate surren dered to Henry VIII avery large part of their ancient episcopal lands and that vast north^n estates, which the archbishops of York had possessed since long before the Conquest, passed permanently into royal ownership. Yet some early York historians have been reluctant to admit that the crown granted to the see ecclesiastical revenues, chiefly arising from the recently dissolved monasteries, in at least partial recompense for the lands the two successive archbishops had renouiKed. Undoubtedly during the middle years of the sixteenth century the see of York underwent aperiod of serious economic disruption but it seems that the archbishops did not have to face a lasting catastrophic fall in their income. Indeed, by 1600 the archbishop of York received an income from temporalities nominally equal to the income his predecessor had enjoyed in 1530- What had changed, and this had long-term consequences both religious subsequent history ofthesee, was the source ofthis revenue.
