The Archaeology of the Abbeys and Priories of Leicestershire by Peter Liddle with Lorna O'Brien The aim of this paper is to provide an overview of the present state of knowledge of the archaeology of the greater religious houses of Medieval Leicestershire. Secular colleges, hospitals, the military orders, friaries and alien cells are not included. Neither is the impact of the sites on the landscape through their creation of granges etc. covered (for this, see Courtney 1981). The documentary background is only covered in outline. For a fuller account see R A McKinley's article in the Victoria County History of Leicestershire (McKinley 1954). The earliest known monastic house was founded at Breedon in c.675AD within the ramparts of the Iron Age hill fort (Dornier 1977). Nothing is known of its buildings except for the magnificent carvings built into the later church. It seems certain that there were other similar communities at this time. Bringhurst seems likely, while sites producing a range of Middle/Late Anglo-Saxon objects at, for instance, Wymeswold and Melton Mowbray may well prove to be monastic (Liddle, forthcoming). THE REFORMATION IN LEICESTER AND LEICESTERSHIRE, c.1480–1590 Eleanor Hall Since its arrival in England, never did Christianity undergo such a transformation as that of the Reformation. By the end of the sixteenth century the official presence of Catholicism had almost entirely disappeared in favour of Protestantism, the permanent establishment of which is still the institutional state religion. This transformation, instigated and imposed on the population by a political elite, had a massive impact on the lives of those who endured it. In fact, the progression of these religious developments depended on the compliance of the English people, which in some regions was often absent. Indeed, consideration must be given to the impact of the Reformation on these localities and social groups, in which conservatism and nostalgia for the traditional faith remained strong. In spite of this, the gradual acceptance of Protestantism by the majority over time allowed its imposition and the permanent establishment of the Church of England. Leicestershire is a county in which significant changes took place. This paper examines these changes and their impact on, and gradual acceptance by, the various religious orders, secular clergy, and the laity in the town and county. Important time and geographical comparisons will be drawn in consideration of the overall impact of the Reformation, and the extent to which both clergy and laity conformed to the religious changes imposed on them, and managed to retain their religious devotion in the process. INTRODUCTION The English Reformation is one of the periods in history that attracts a high level of interest and debate. -

The Economic Problems ofthe See of York: Decline and Recovery in the Sixteenth Century By CLAIRE CROSS A LEGEND has long persisted that the temporalities of the see of York suffered disastrously at the time of the Reformation through spoliation by the crown. Unembellished evidence confirms that in the decade between 1536 and 1546 Archbishops Edward Lee and Robert Holgate surren dered to Henry VIII avery large part of their ancient episcopal lands and that vast north^n estates, which the archbishops of York had possessed since long before the Conquest, passed permanently into royal ownership. Yet some early York historians have been reluctant to admit that the crown granted to the see ecclesiastical revenues, chiefly arising from the recently dissolved monasteries, in at least partial recompense for the lands the two successive archbishops had renouiKed. Undoubtedly during the middle years of the sixteenth century the see of York underwent aperiod of serious economic disruption but it seems that the archbishops did not have to face a lasting catastrophic fall in their income. Indeed, by 1600 the archbishop of York received an income from temporalities nominally equal to the income his predecessor had enjoyed in 1530- What had changed, and this had long-term consequences both religious subsequent history ofthesee, was the source ofthis revenue. This book cannot be expected to please everybody, and it makes no attempt to conciliate those who prefer sentiment to truth, or who allow their reading of historical events to be distorted by present-day controversies, whether ecclesiastical or political. In that respect it tries to live up to the dictum of Samuel Butler that 'he excels most who hits the golden mean most exactly in the middle'. -

Find out more about The Church of England and The Diocese of York The Church of England The Church of England is led by the Archbishops of Canterbury and York and 106 other bishops. They provide guidance and direction to the churches across the country and make decisions on the Church in society. The General Synod is an assembly of bishops, clergy and laity (all members who are not part of the clergy), and creates the laws of the Church. ‘Synod’ is a Greek word meaning “coming together and finding a way”. The Archbishop of Canterbury has oversight for the ministry and mission in the southern two-thirds of England. He also fills a unique position in the world-wide Anglican communion as spiritual leader. The Archbishop of York has oversight for the ministry and mission in the northern third of England. Together they lead the vision and direction of the Church of England. Our two archbishops and 24 other bishops sit in the House of Lords, making a major contribution to Parliament's work. They are known as Lords Spiritual. Her Majesty the Queen is the Supreme Governor of the Church of England. The Queen appoints archbishops, bishops and deans of cathedrals on the advice of the Prime Minister. There are 42 dioceses in the Church of England (though only 40 are in England, with the other 2 being the Diocese of Sodor and Man and the Diocese of Europe). Thomas Becket: Chancellor, Archbishop and Saint 7 July: feast day commemorating the translation of his remains from the crypt to Trinity Chapel shrine in the cathedral, 800 years ago, in 1220. 29 December: St. Thomas’s Becket’s feast day, commemorating his martyrdom in Canterbury Cathedral, 850 years ago, in 1170. An extensive programme of events to mark these anniversaries was planned by the cathedral at Canterbury, but because of the Covid-19 pandemic, all have been postponed until 29 December at the earliest. A pilgrimage along the medieval Pilgrim’s Way from Southwark to Canterbury has been cancelled. Holy Trinity Church’s commemorations, centred on our own medieval Becket chantry chapel, have likewise had to be postponed, but the Becket exhibition in the church celebrates these significant 2020 dual anniversaries. Thomas Becket was born c. 1118, in Cheapside, London, son of a Norman merchant father. He rose from these modest beginnings to become a powerful adversary of his king, Henry II, and one of the most venerated medieval Christian saints. Educated first at the Augustinian Merton Priory, then in London and Paris, he started his career serving the city sheriffs as a clerk and accountant; he then became a member of the illustrious household of Archbishop Theobald, who appointed Becket as his agent, and sent by him to study civil and canon law at Bologna and Auxerre. In 1154, Theobald made him Archdeacon of Canterbury, an important and lucrative post, and less than three months later he recommended him to Henry II as Lord Chancellor. In this post, Becket had the opportunity to distinguish himself in initiatives no longer associated with Chancellor; he razed castles, repaired the Tower of London, conducted embassies, mustered and led troops in battle, and was trusted completely by Henry, becoming his close companion and intimate friend, both at court and in the hunting field.
