B. · Herstellung: Peter Papenbrok Printed in Germany ISBN 3-442-24288-6 www.blanvalet-verlag.de Die Zitadelle des Magus I Hier in den Ebenen, wo der Wind Licht und Dunkelheit umarmt, wo mit dem Wind die Stimmen der Götter zu uns dringen und von dem Lied künden, noch bevor der Gesang einsetzt, hier unter den Winden wandert das Volk noch immer seiner Heimat entgegen, sie ziehen voran, und ein alter Mann singt das Lied über ein Land, das nicht existiert, wunderschön, grausam wie das Sonnenlicht, kalt wie Winde, die verborgen sein mögen hinter dem Auge des Regens, und weit vor uns, meine Söhne und Väter, dreht sich das Lied und stößt hinab auf das Land wie ein Falke über dem schlafenden Land, getrieben vom Hunger, und wie eine heiße Quelle bricht er hervor und sprudelt, der endlose Gesang: 11 So war es nicht immer nach all den Kriegen, einst herrschte eine Zeit, als das Feuer nicht aus eigenem Drang aus dürrem Gras emporstieg, eine Zeit des Wassers und des schwingenden Lichts, als wir uns nicht vorstellen konnten, daß neues Land sich erheben würde aus dem großen Trugbild von Ländern, die wandern in der Erinnerung von der Mutter zur Tochter in einem verfliegenden Traum, wo das nicht hätte geschehen können, auch nicht der Tanz der Monde, die offenen Herzen der Falken, selbst nicht der Wind sah die Feuer voraus, die kochten wie das Blut der Wütenden in den Adern des Landes und unseren Traum zerstörten, während wir schliefen auf unserem Weg, wo doch dies alles geschah. Die Reiter fanden das Kind im wogenden Gras und Dunkelheit, in der Nacht, als Mond und Mond sich vereinten und ihr Licht erlosch, und der Himmel war schwarz bis auf einen silbernen Keil, 12 geformt wie eine Klinge im Herzen des Himmels. Und in der Nacht, in der sie ihn fanden, ward auch sein Name gefunden, und die namenlosen Jahre ließ er zurück, jene Zeit bei den nächtlichen Katzen, die um ihn gewesen im wogenden Gras und Dunkelheit, zu erinnern vermochte er sich jedoch nie, er zählte sie nicht, die Gräber auf Gräber, die die Wege der Kindheit gesäumt und seine ersten Worte mit sich genommen. Und in der Nacht, in der sie ihn fanden ward auch sein Name gefunden, und Flußwind ließ er sich rufen fortan. Für ihn gewählt, denn dieses klang nach dem wogenden Gras in der Dunkelheit und nach Angst vor dem Himmel und der Klinge des schwindenden Monds. Und geachtet wurde er bei den Familien, denn der Ursprung ihres Bluts war für Volk verloren, und nur die Spuren der Antilope und der heftigen Rufe des Falken hatten sich in ihre Worte gesenkt, und das Wehen des Windes verlor sich und nistete in seinem Kopf, als er lief und lief und lief, 14 bis Que-Shu ihn erlösten, eine Heimat boten sie ihm, und der Traum der Que-Shu verband sich mit seinem wie die Dunkelheit mit dem Mond, bis er sich nur mehr an die Ebenen und den Wind und das Wandern zu erinnern wußte. Gekleidet in Gaben der Freunde des Volkes, das Leder der Elen, gekleidet in Fuchs, mit den edlen Federn des Falken, zehn Jahre nur zählend, kam hervor die Tochter der Häuptlinge, die Tochter, nicht verbunden mit Mann oder Kummer, nicht verbunden mit Dingen, die fremd ihr geblieben. Die Anmut der Väter floß in ihren Adern wie ein Wind, dem die Welt untertan ist. Die Seele eines Jägers war sie im Herzen der Wandernden, das Gold ihrer Augen ließ denken an jenen goldenen Mond, der in der Nacht ihrer Namensgebung schien, und Flußwind wußte, daß ihre Reise, jener Stillstand zwischen den Horizonten, dem Ende sich nahte im Licht und in der Aussicht auf Licht. Und heilig die Tage, wo er ihr dann nahte, heilig die Luft, die seine Lieder der Liebe einst trug, das Land hinter ihm ein Lied wie von Bienen, an der Schwelle des Hörens erzählten sie ihm: Große Süße ist es, zugleich doch auch Schmerz, nun lerne, nichts andres stelzt dir jetzt an. 16 Und sieben zählten die Sommer, in denen sie auswich, und Winter, in denen die Kälte und das Land hervorbrachen mit den Worten Tochter des Stammeshäuptlings. Das geteilte Herz der Elenantilope dampfte vom bebenden Boden zu seinen Füßen, und der Alte Mann,Großvater, Wanderer, Deuter des Himmels, las im Gesicht des Jungen, das aus dem Gesicht des Mannes hervortrat, verbunden wie die Monde in jener Nacht, als sein Name gefunden, die Worte wie einen Zauber wiederholt er, als sei es zum Schutz, Tochter des Stammeshäuptlings, die alte nicht endende Geschichte von Liebe und Ferne und den Grenzen, denen das Herz sich unterwirft. Aber die Augen des Wanderers konnten die einsamen Augen bald nicht mehr sehn, beobachten, als die Dinge geschahen, in den Augen der Tochter, das Leopardenauge spiegelt sich dort, und in der Spiegelung, bis sich die Spiegelung in der Ewigkeit findet wie Gedanken in einem endlosen Korridor, das konnten die einsamen Augen bald nicht mehr sehn, doch die Augen von Goldmond – da bemerkte der Stammeshäuptling 17 den Tanz ihrer Augen und das Geflüster, er sah es vom Sitz eines Richters und entschied, dies dürfe nicht sein, und er stellte Flußwind drei Aufgaben, die kaum zu erfüllen, und sagte: Mache meiner Tochter getrost jetzt den Hof, doch wenn du zu meiner Feuerstelle je zurückkehren möchtest, dann trag mir den Mond in deinen Händen, die Sterne auf einer vergänglichen Decke, und kommst du vom Osten, vergiß nicht, den Kristallstab zu tragen, den Arm der Götter im vergessenen Land, die Quelle aller Magie.

Bertelsmann will own 53 percent, Pearson 47 percent. The closing of the transaction is scheduled to take place in the second half of 2013, following regulatory approval. The announcement of the combination was made today in Gütersloh, Germany by Thomas Rabe, Chairman and CEO of Bertelsmann, and in London by Marjorie Scardino, Chief Executive of Pearson. Upon closing, Markus Dohle, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Random House worldwide, will be CEO of the new group. John Makinson, Chairman and CEO of Penguin, will become Chairman of the Board of Directors. Additional senior executive appointments will be announced in due course. Bertelsmann will appoint five representatives to the group's Board of Directors, Pearson four. The new name will be Penguin Random House. Until the closing, the companies will maintain their current separate operations and continue conducting business independently. The international media, services, and education company has completed the acquisition of the remaining 25-percent stake from co-shareholder Pearson after receiving all necessary regulatory approvals. Penguin Random House comprises around 320 individual book publishing imprints on six continents, with more than 15,000 new publications and over 600 million books sold per year.
