Long Reef SLSC Sod Turning Ceremony

The long-awaited and much anticipated redevelopment of Long Reef Surf Life Saving Club is underway, thanks in part to NSW Government funding! Building works have now commenced and locals will soon see our new state of the art facility start to take shape. To mark this significant milestone, I attended an official sod- turning ceremony with Peter Kinsey, President of Long Reef SLSC, Mayor Michael Regan and the Member for Mackellar, Jason Falinski MP. This is going to be a great building and a new heart for life saving on the Northern Beaches. It will serve club members and our local community for years to come.

NSW RFS Northern Beaches District Medal Presentation Our local volunteers who form part of the Rural Fire Service Brigades on the Northern Beaches often give dedicated service for decades. I was delighted to be part of recognising the incredible volunteers who keep us as safe as possible from the constant risk of bushfires on the Northern Beaches. Mitchell Davies was one of the many Rural Fire Service members at Warringah Headquarters Station at Terrey Hills who received his award in the presence of Deputy Commissioner Peter McKechnie.

Nan Bosler am Dr Kerry Chant NSW Premier’s Wakehurst Woman of the Year Woman of the Year Dr Kerry Chant is the longest serving NSW Chief Health Officer and has been a familiar and reassuring presence throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. Quite simply, she has been our chief COVID warrior.

Earlier this year, I was pleased to announce Mrs Nan Bosler AM as the 2021 Wakehurst Electorate Local Woman of the Year, in recognition of her extensive voluntary work over many years. Having made a tremendous contribution to our community over a period spanning more than half a century, Nan was an obvious choice for ‘Woman of the Year’ in our electorate. In 1946, as a young Girl Guide, Nan made a promise to help others. Seventy five years later, Nan has dutifully fulfilled this promise and continues to do so I have worked very closely with Dr as a leading community activist and advocate for youth, seniors and people Chant over the past 15 months as with disability. the Minister for Health and Medical Research and I was delighted Dr Nan, congratulations once again and thank you for all that you do for our Chant was named NSW Premier’s community and beyond! New Palliative Care Unit Opens At Mona Vale

Health facilities on the Northern Beaches have been further enhanced with the opening of a brand new, purpose-built palliative care unit at Mona Vale . The NSW Government is committed to providing best practice multi-disciplinary palliative care services that give patients and their families real choice and support, during what is undoubtedly one of the most difficult times. Our amazing new inpatient facility is a fantastic outcome for our community, delivering a dedicated ten bed palliative care unit and a ten bed Geriatric Evaluation and Management Unit. Palliative care is crucial and the unit at Mona Vale will ensure Northern Beaches locals nearing the final stages of life will be supported and well cared for, closer to home. I was proud to officially open our new palliative care unit with Pittwater MP Rob Stokes and Manly MP James Griffin. WINTER 2021

ANZAC DAY 2021

I enjoyed attending local Anzac Day services this year after COVID-19 prevented these events being held in 2020. At Oxford Falls Peace Park, I joined Beacon Hill Rural Fire Brigade and other members of the community for a dawn service. Built by local World War II veterans, Oxford Falls Peace Park is a wonderful place of reflection anytime but particularly on Anzac Day. At Northern Beaches Hospital a commemorative service for patients and visitors was undertaken. We were honoured to hear from Sub-Lieutenant (and nurse) Olivia Mortlock, who delivered the Anzac Day address. I am sure locals share my appreciation of the ability to come together following last year’s pause, to reflect on the contribution of all who have served. Lest We Forget. Maths Trains Brains Why did the maths In May, the Maths Trains Brains 2021 campaign was book look so sad…..? launched to encourage students and parents to Because it had too understand the importance of maths and to have a many problems! positive attitude towards it. The Minister for Education also announced a new numeracy course that will teach Year 11 and 12 students practical numeracy and mathematical skills, such as budgeting and account keeping. I recognise that maths does not come naturally to all students, but this course is all about giving them the skillset they will require in the future. The numeracy course has been trialled by students and teachers over the past three years and the results show that students felt empowered where they would otherwise be disengaged with maths. This is a great result!

Funding Boost for Local Schools Six schools in our electorate have beneffited from the NSW Government’s $120 million Metro Renewal Program. The program co-funds more than 200 projects, including new toilet blocks, classrooms, playgrounds and staff rooms at schools across Metropolitan NSW. Toilet upgrades will be funded at Allambie Heights PS, Collaroy Plateau PS and Killarney Heights HS. Fisher Road School will receive an admin and staff upgrade, along with Killarney Heights Public School and NBSC Cromer Campus will soon have a new covered outdoor learning area. I welcome this significant funding which will deliver these projects over the next 18 months.
