Il 1990 segna l’uscita di Because it’s Christmas , nel quale combina brani originali a melodie storiche quali Joy to the world e Baby it’s cold outside . Abreu A dissertation submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (American Culture) in The University of Michigan 2012 Doctoral Committee: Associate Professor Jesse Hoffnung-Garskof Associate Professor Richard Turits Associate Professor Yeidy Rivero Associate Professor Anthony P. Mora © Christina D. Abreu 2012 For my parents. ii Acknowledgments Not a single word of this dissertation would have made it to paper without the support of an incredible community of teachers, mentors, colleagues, and friends at the University of Michigan. I am forever grateful to my dissertation committee: Jesse Hoffnung-Garskof, Richard Turits, Yeidy Rivero, and Anthony Mora. Jesse, your careful and critical reading of my chapters challenged me to think more critically and to write with more precision and clarity. From very early on, you treated me as a peer and have always helped put things – from preliminary exams and research plans to the ups and downs of the job market – in perspective. Your advice and example has made me a better writer and a better historian, and for that I thank you. Richard, your confidence in my work has been a constant source of encouragement. Thank you for helping me to realize that I had something important to say. Yeidy, your willingness to join my dissertation committee before you even arrived on campus says a great deal about your intellectual generosity. ¡Mil Gracias! Anthony, watching you in the classroom and interact with students offered me an opportunity to see a great teacher in action.

PRIMARY SOURCES: AN EXAMINATION OF IRA GITLER’S SWING TO BOP AND ORAL HISTORY’S ROLE IN THE STORY OF BEBOP By CHRISTOPHER DENNISON A thesis submitted to the Graduate School-Newark Rutgers University, The State University of New Jersey In partial fulfillment of the requirements of Master of Arts M.A. Program in Jazz History and Research Written under the direction of Dr. Lewis Porter And approved by ___________________________ _____________________________ Newark, New Jersey May, 2015 ABSTRACT OF THE THESIS Primary Sources: An Examination of Ira Gitler’s Swing to Bop and Oral History’s Role in the Story of Bebop By CHRISTOPHER DENNISON Thesis director: Dr. Lewis Porter This study is a close reading of the influential Swing to Bop: An Oral History of the Transition of Jazz in the 1940s by Ira Gitler. The first section addresses the large role oral history plays in the dominant bebop narrative, the reasons the history of bebop has been constructed this way, and the issues that arise from allowing oral history to play such a large role in writing bebop’s history. The following chapters address specific instances from Gitler’s oral history and from the relevant recordings from this transitionary period of jazz, with musical transcription and analysis that elucidate the often vague words of the significant musicians. The aim of this study is to illustratethe smoothness of the transition from swing to bebop and to encourage a sense of skepticism in jazz historians’ consumption of oral history. ii Acknowledgments The biggest thanks go to Dr. Lewis Porter and Dr.

LORRAINE FEATHER SELECTED CREDITS RULES DON’T APPLY (2016) ‘Rules Don’t Apply’ title song (Critics’ choice award nominated) co-written with Eddie Arkin THE PRINCESS DIARIES 2: ROAYAL ENGAGEMENT (2004) (Lyrics: “Your Crowning Glory”) THE JUNGLE BOOK 2(2003) (Original Songs) (Lorraine nominated for World Soundtrack Award) DICK TRACY (1990) (Performer: “Back In Business”) BIOGRAPHY Lorraine Feather was born in Manhattan. Her parents named her Billie Jane Lee Lorraine after godmother Billie Holiday, her mother Jane (formerly a big band singer), her mother’s ex-roommate Peggy Lee, and the song ‘Sweet Lorraine’. She is the daughter of the late jazz writer Leonard Feather. The Feathers moved to L.A. when Lorraine was 12; at 18, after two years as a theater arts major at L.A. City College, she returned to New York to pursue an acting career. Some touring, off-Broadway work and the Broadway show ‘Jesus Christ Superstar’ followed, interspersed with countless waitressing jobs up and down Manhattan’s West Side. Frequently out of work, and discouraged by more than one restaurateur from pursuing a career in the food service industry, Lorraine decided to try singing. She began working with various jazz and Top 40 bands in and around New York. She sang backup for Petula Clark and Grand Funk Railroad, and finally put her own act together, eventually moving back to L.A., where she sang at local jazz clubs. Soon after, she joined producer Richard Perry’s vocal trio Full Swing and recorded three albums with the group. Lorraine wrote lyrics for most of the songs on these releases, some for classic pieces like Duke Ellington’s “Rockin’ in Rhythm,” the Yellowjackets’ ‘Ballad of the Whale’ and Horace Henderson’s “Big John’s Special” (later heard in the movie ‘Swing Shift’).

  • Billy Joel's Turn and Return to Classical Music Jie Fang Goh, MM
ABSTRACT Fantasies and Delusions: Billy Joel’s Turn and Return to Classical Music Jie Fang Goh, M.M. Mentor: Jean A. Boyd, Ph.D. In 2001, the release of Fantasies and Delusions officially announced Billy Joel’s remarkable career transition from popular songwriting to classical instrumental music composition. Representing Joel’s eclectic aesthetic that transcends genre, this album features a series of ten solo piano pieces that evoke a variety of musical styles, especially those coming from the Romantic tradition. A collaborative effort with classical pianist Hyung-ki Joo, Joel has mentioned that Fantasies and Delusions is the album closest to his heart and spirit. However, compared to Joel’s popular works, it has barely received any scholarly attention. Given this gap in musicological work on the album, this thesis focuses on the album’s content, creative process, and connection with Billy Joel’s life, career, and artistic identity. Through this thesis, I argue that Fantasies and Delusions is reflective of Joel’s artistic identity as an eclectic composer, a melodist, a Romantic, and a Piano Man.
